in the uk the facebook pages of various anti-cuts groups were shut down before the royal wedding. I believe facebook claimed that they had violated the terms of use. however, one of the affected groups (the goldmiths students) made a freedom of information (FOI) requests to find out more. The response to the foi said: "These are questions relating to the operational policing of extremist organisations and as such the standard Neither Confirm Nor Deny approach applies. This means that the MPS will not confirm either way, whether communications with Facebook exist or whether requests regarding this matter were/were not made." Data visualization software

Hi Aoirs Can anyone recommend a user-friendly and preferably cloud-based data visualization software? As part of my PhD I'm capturing data mapping the social media terrain (so timeline, volume & the path this takes). From my own online searches, cloud-based appears the best way forward. Am willing to pay a license if open source is not as good. Hi Aoirs, The National Media Museum in Bradford, UK, has just announced a new open commission for the upcoming Life Online gallery and I thought you might be interested: --- National Media Museum Open Commission: Call for Entries The National Media Museum in partnership with FutureEverything has announced a £10,000 open commission for a new, groundbreaking artwork to premiere at the launch of Life Online, the world's first gallery to explore the social, technological, and cultural impact of the internet and the web. Life Online opens in the National Media Museum in March 2012. This commission will produce one of the inaugural exhibits in a programme of special exhibitions focusing on the key issues surrounding the internet and web, and their impact on our everyday lives. The first exhibition is titled [Open Source]. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 27th July and interviews will be held in Bradford on Wednesday 24th August. The Life Online exhibition [open source] will open in a brand new custom-built gallery on the Museum's 7th floor. Here in Canada the white hat Linux hacker community is political in a real sense. Three examples: They have successfully gotten the Green Party of Canada to adopt open source and free software as a policy platform. One local hacker/open source business person, Russell McOrmund has spent about two years now attending Canada's copyright reform hearings in Parliament and given testimony. Perhaps it would be better to label the topic as "Artisanal" invention or development. It would then remove the negative connotation that the term hacker engenders. It would also play into the concept that such developments come from non-corporate or non-industrial settings, where individuals (outsiders?) or loosely structured groups exploit contemporary technologies to create new and (perhaps) useful applications. For example, the Apple iPod/iPad SDK makes it easy for non-computer scientists to create apps. And web technologies can be easily enabled to create rich Internet experiences by non-technologists. Such a label links into the history of invention - Edison, Hewlett-Packard, Wozniak-Jobs, the latter two pairs worked in garages. Perhaps we should not forget ancient alchemists, who developed "algorithms" for creating new substances by "hacking" matter. Finally, such a label links into a vast literature (e.g. Mary Shelley's Frankestein) and the SciFi genre where lone (evil?) scientists develop remarkable technologies. From this perspective, it might not only be easier to look at the good, bad, and ugly of "hacking" but also map out its meaning. Dr. Francis T.
