I am wondering what people think about internet research conference fees. I personally think that since Milwaukee costs have been too high for many members and most graduate student members. I have talked with some members of the exec on this and while I'm sure they are active and care about the matter and they are trying to resolve the matter, it is unclear to me that they know what the members want beyond that many people tend to pay for the conference and thus the fees must be reasonable in some light to those that pay for them. I'm more concerned about those that can't or choose not to pay for them and how they are hidden in the system of 'voting with dollars' and likely how they are possibly alienated from participating/becoming members of an organization in which they can't afford to participate. I'm wondering if other people have that concern too. If you do have that concern, then perhaps we should propose a working group to investigate the capacities of the membership to pay the conference fees. I grant that I could be entirely off base too, perhaps everyone is happy with the fees and no one is having any problem paying them, I suspect though that we are creating and/or reifying a two class system in aoir, where the less well off are just members of the listserv, don't join the organization, can't vote in the elections, because they can't go to the conferences, and the well off are joining, going to the conferences, and able to take advantage of all the organizational benefits. In any case, if you'd like to engage in this discussion, send me a note to jhuns(a)vt.edu with the subject 'fees' and we can petition the exec to form a working group. If we don't get enough people, I'll just assume I'm wrong and that what I suspect is happening... is not happening. Downloading online forum postings and analyzing occurence of keywords in the data

Dear list-members, I'm a Utrecht University based (Netherlands) researcher working on the European http://www.mignetproject.eu/ project working on transnational digital networks, migration and gender. More specifically I'm studying knowledge and education processes across formal (university) and informal (forums, wikipedia) knowledge domains. I was wondering if anyone on the list has experiences with scraping online forum data and searching it for the occurence of keywords. Especially I'm wondering which software best suits my preferences, in selecting for instance a certain timeline to scrape as I would like to compare the curriculum of a year of university courses and their attention for diversity issues and a year of forum postings and their attention for diversity issues. Media, Knowledge & Education: Cultures and Ethics of Sharing Call for papers by the Media Forum Innsbruck for an international conference at the University of Innsbruck (November 18-19, 2011) Sharing has emerged as one of the core cultural values native to the networked environment where information has many properties of a classic public good, that is, it is non-rivalrous in use and non-excludable in access. As Manuel Castells (2009, p. 126) puts it: "In our society, the protocols of communication are not based on the sharing of culture but on the culture of sharing." IT-based innovation has increasingly impacted on the way individuals share information and recently forced society into a discourse about what can, should, must or even must not be shared. Yet, the sharing of information has been discussed primarily from the point of view of copyright (free licenses, law enforcement, law reforms) and from the economic perspective (new modes of production, business models, potential to turn around industries, financing the 'first copy'). With this conference, we move beyond these aspects and shift the focus to the cultural and normative dimensions of sharing. What are the values embedded in this informational 'culture of sharing'? How do they differ across various contexts, organizational and social practices? How do these relate to, transform, and possibly conflict with other value sets dominant in organizations and society? How does the widespread use of online sharing platforms affect organizations and society? With this international conference, and subsequent publications in suitable format (online and offline) we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the promises, benefits and challenges of the cultural paradigm of sharing in different contexts. We welcome submissions from scholars and activists as well as media professionals. Proposals that address one or more of the following topics are especially encouraged: - cultural practices of sharing in networked spaces - ethics in social media developments - open educational resources and open access publishing - emerging forms of sharing news - sharing as community engagement - sharing as media activism - media dynamics and sharing in global public spheres - normative aspects of information policy and knowledge dynamics - business strategies and (information) sharing - economies of sharing vs. economies of exchange - traditions of sharing in cross-cultural perspective - aspects of sharing in media philosophy - motivational aspects in organizational information sharing - organizational and IT instruments to foster or guide information sharing - social status and reputational economies - awareness of others’ activities and its impact on sharing Academic, technological, and artistic contributions are welcome. Proposals can be submitted for conceptual papers, reports of empirical studies, design artifacts, and workshops. The conference is orientated towards discourse and open exchanges among the participants. Conference languages are English and German. The international conference is hosted by the Innsbruck Media Studies Research Group at the University of Innsbruck. Tagpad: Doing any interviews this summer?

Hi All, I'm a new member of this list, but I hope you don't mind my first contribution being a plug for some new software! We've just released some software that we developed from one of our NSF projects. It's called 'TagPad' and its designed to make it easier to conduct and analyze research interviews. It's been designed to fit as flexibly as possible with structured and semi-structured interviews, and when it uploads the recorded audio from your interviews it splits the recorded audio by question. You can also tag audio for quick analysis before transcription (or to support selective transcription). It runs on the iPad. We're looking for people to use it who we can interview and study a bit while they're using the app. If you're planning on doing an interview study in the next few months, any chance you could help us out? The application is up on the AppStore and it's free and pretty easy to use (if you have an iPad that is). Happy to hear any suggestions or comments on the application too! Data Competition: Announcing the Wikipedia Participation Challenge

(apologies for cross-posting) We are pleased to announce the launch of the Wikipedia Participation Challenge, a data modeling competition to develop an algorithm that predicts future editing activity on Wikipedia. The competition is hosted by Kaggle, a platform for data modeling and prediction competitions. The Participation Challenge is open to community members and anyone else who is interested in analyzing Wikipedia data. This is the first of two data competitions the Wikimedia Foundation will sponsor this year. The goal of this competition is to gain a better understanding of the factors that encourage or discourage people from editing Wikipedia. Increasing the number of active editors is one of our strategic priorities. Both the Wikipedia communities and the Wikimedia Foundation stand to benefit from models that quantify the factors that determine whether a Wikipedia editor is likely to continue contributing. The competition asks contestants to develop a model to predict the number of edits a given editor will make in six month’s time. The data used in this competition comes from the publicly available English Wikipedia XML data dump. An anonymous donor has generously contributed $10,000 as prize money. There will be a Grand Prize for the best prediction, as well as special prizes awarded for the use of open source software. The Grand Prize winner will also be given the opportunity to present their prediction model at the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining. Call for Proposals to Host Internet Research 14.0 (2013) The Executive Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers is seeking statements of interest for hosting the annual meeting of the Association in October of 2013. The Internet Research conference draws an international group of researchers and practitioners to present and discuss work at the cutting edge in understanding the social and cultural aspects of the internet. Organizations or consortia who may be interested in hosting the conference should contact Alex Halavais at vp(a)aoir.org. We will provide a guide to a full proposal for those invited to apply. At this stage, we seek an indication of interest and intent. In the past, we have held the conference in North America in odd numbered years, though we would entertain strong proposals from venues elsewhere in the world, both for 2013 and 2014. Hosting AoIR provides visibility to your institution and city from researchers from around the world, drawing a group of well known scholars to your city during the period of the conference and providing lasting connections. Geography still matters in an internet age, and hosting Internet Research represents one way of locating important centers of innovation in social computing. The most recent conference was held in Gothenburg, Sweden (http://ir11.aoir.org/) and the upcoming conferences will be held in Seattle, USA (http://ir12.aoir.org) and Salford, UK. We generally seek hosting cities that are reasonably accessible by international visitors, and provide a range of lodging, dining, entertainment and cultural attractions within reasonable proximity of the venue. The venue should provide both a central hall and meeting rooms for a minimum of 400 attendees, as well as the necessary infrastructure for presentations and high-speed wireless internet access. There are generally 7-8 concurrent presentation rooms over a period of 3 to 3.5 days, plus a day of 3-6 preconferences. The conference generally provides some form of onsite refreshments during the day (snacks, coffee, and in many cases lunch), as well as a banquet and receptions. The Association generally handles registration, and will (with the aid of a program chair) provide assistance with the infrastructure for the peer review and the publication of selected papers. Members of the AoIR Executive Committee serve on the organizing committee and are involved closely with the planning and execution of the conference. The local hosts are responsible for all on-site arrangements, contracts, transportation, arrangements with local hotels or other lodging, technology, supporting staff for the event. The hosts should be willing and able to mobilize local support for the conference, including volunteers, fund-raising, and cost-sharing. Although a full proposal is not necessary, some indication of what you could offer in terms of hosting would be appreciated. In particular: 1. Who makes up your group, who the proposed local chair would be, and your connection to internet research and AoIR. 2. Information about the venue, including recent conferences held there. We have, in the past, held AoIR in hotels and conference centers, as well as university and research campuses. Please give some indication of the layout of the facility and its proximity to lodging and dining (including less expensive options), as well as to its suitability for a conference like Internet Research. 3. Proposed dates. IR is generally held in early October, and usually over a Thursday-Saturday, with pre-conferences on a Wednesday, though there is some flexibility. It is helpful if we are able to avoid conflicts with other major conferences of interest to attendees. If we are unable to schedule your venue for 2013, do you expect you might have interest in 2014? 4. What makes your city and venue particularly attractive to the Internet Research community. Feel free to keep your letter brief. For those sites the Executive Committee feels are suitable for the upcoming conference, we will provide organizers with instructions for a full proposal, and are happy to work with them to provide a strong proposal.
