*CFP: Digital Diasporas and Transnational Social Movements: Capital, Labor, Mobility and Identity* Editor - Radhika Gajjala (see http://personal.bgsu.edu/~radhik ) "Digital diasporas" occur at the intersection of local/ global, national/ international, private/public, offline/online and embodied/disembodied. In digital diasporas, a multiplicity of representations, mass media broadcasts, textual and visual performances and interpersonal interactions occur. The term *"digital diaspora"* is most often used to talk about how diasporic populations the world over use the Internet to connect to each other. Scholars such as Anna Everett (2009) and Jeniffer Brinkerhoff (2009) have each used the phrase in relation to very specific situated histories of forced migrations (African American histories of slavery) and transnational travel respectively. The link to labor flows and hierarchies of colonialisms and digital globalization is clear in both. In most general usage of the phrase "digital diaspora," however, it is used to describe migrant populations without attention to the specific conditions of subjectivity that produces diasporas. Further, it is interesting that international NGOs (specifically the United Nations) and Transnational corporations as well as National businesses have mobilized the notion of digital diaspora in "reverse brain-drain" efforts where very materially successful transnationals and migrants with moneys to invest actually get to return home. In the past I have edited a couple publications that center around South Asian Digital Diasporas (a Special Section of New Media and Society in 2006) and South Asian Technospace (a co-edited collection of essays). My intent with this next volume on digital diasporas is to include material that helps elaborate on the more current platforms where links between transnational capital and labor flows can be mapped in the context of the increasing NGOization and ITization of the globe. Thus questions include (but are not limited to) - why "digital diaspora" and why now? What forms a "digital diaspora" within gaming environments and social networks? How are non-profits and transnational corporations (similarly or differently) mobilizing this idea of digital diaspora in relation to labor and capital flows? How does a "digital diaspora" form - how does it "look" - how does it function and so on. >From prospective contributors, I will need an extended abstract of 800 to 1000 words that fleshes out the theoretical and methodological approaches in relation to a specific site that will be examined. Software to assist making back-of-the-book subject indexes

Dear all, This summer I will be assisting the editors of an anthology. I have spoken to various people who have worked on generating back-of-the-book subject indexes, mostly manually, while some have opted for software, either using Word indexing options to stand-alone applications. A detailed overview of software options is available from the American Society of Indexers, http://www.asindexing.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3319. However, I would like to tap into the lists collective intelligence to decide what's best. What are your best experiences? Manual or automated? We are considering asking contributors to the anthology to mark a number of (total) 15-20 critics, concepts and places in the book that they would like to have included in the index in the proofs. University of California Santa Barbara Media Industries Project Manager Job # CFTM 1105 UC Santa Barbara's Carsey-Wolf Center seeks a project manager for the Media Industries Project (MIP). Now entering its third year, MIP is a multidisciplinary project that examines major trends reshaping the media industries and their consequences for producers, distributors and consumers. Our research agenda focuses on digitization, globalization, and creative labor. Collaborators include media studies and communication scholars, as well as experts in related fields (http://www.carseywolf.ucsb.edu/mip) We are looking for an individual with managerial and research expertise, as well as outstanding leadership skills. The project manager will devote 50% of her/his time to organizational duties and the rest to a program of research devoted to one or more of the above-mentioned MIP areas of emphasis. The project manager works with a team of faculty, graduate students, and industry researchers under the direction of the project's Principal Investigators and the Carsey-Wolf Center Executive Director. Applicants should have expertise with issues related to the convergence of traditional and new media industries, including familiarity with relevant technologies, industry trends, professional practices, policy concerns, and social issues. Applicants should also have excellent communication skills and be comfortable interacting with high-level media professionals, scholars, and the public. A Ph.D. in media studies, communication, or a related field is required, and candidates should be published in her/his field of expertise and currently engaged in a relevant program of scholarly research. The position is an Academic Coordinator II, Step 4 at 100% time for 12 months, which is renewable based on satisfactory performance reviews. Full health and disability benefits are included. Telecoms/Internet Shut Down in Nigeria

Dear All, This is important in the annals of events leading to governments shutting down communication technologies (mainly mobile phones and the Internet) for "security" reason: On May 29, 2011, Nigeria FG secretly ordered shut down of Telecoms and the Internet in the capital city of Abuja for hours (still being determined) before and after the Inauguartion ceremony of the president-elect. There are mixed reactions to the right of government to embark on this action, given the people's right to freedom of speech, expression and of the press. An ongoing survey hopes to analyse (across print and new media, e.g. Facebook) attitude of the citizenry towards such un-annouced breech in the freedom of expression and right to communicate. This becomes intriguing when the President day after the incident assented the much-awaited Freedom of Information Bill. In the five years since that special issue was published, mobile devices have become much more powerful, and users have become more demanding of mobile access to information systems. Many individuals now carry powerful computing devices with them at all times, blurring the boundaries between personal and organizational systems and uses. Individuals are becoming “experiential” computing users, with personal computing devices embedded in their everyday activities. The increased power and prevalence of mobile devices presents an opportunity, if not an obligation, for information systems researchers to revisit fundamental assumptions embedded in our theories. What changes when we assume that mobile access is a key component of information systems and that mobility is a key expectation of users? Should IS theories that were developed to investigate the deployment of fixed systems in bounded environments controlled by organizations be revisited in the context of mobility? We invite theoretical and empirical papers that explore the meanings and implications of mobility for information systems research and researchers. We encourage broad definitions of mobility and information systems, in recognition that mobility can dissolve organizational boundaries, reshape information systems, and change the nature of use and users.
