Peer production community survey results
by Jarkko Moilanen 11 Jul '11

11 Jul '11

Hi, I did a little online survey, which was aimed at peer production community members (hackerspaces, makerspaces, 100k garages, diybio, etc). This survey has now been conducted 2010 and 2011. Some of the results include comparison between the years. Results can be found form here: http://extreme.ajatukseni.net/2011/07/10/peer-production-communities-survey… Feedback would be most welcome. **************************** Jarkko Moilanen M.Soc.Sc. bear with us, while we think!
by Seda Guerses 10 Jul '11

two similar initiatives from germany have concurrently released manifesto's for "slow science". i have seen many of the topics (data collection, publication, research funding practices and academic positions) on this list. i wonder if similar positions are articulated by other academic communities and what some of you think of the topics raised? the manifesto of the slow-science initiative from berlin is as follows (http://slow-science.org/) THE SLOW SCIENCE MANIFESTO We are scientists. We don’t blog. We don’t twitter. We take our time. Don’t get us wrong—we do say yes to the accelerated science of the early 21st century. We say yes to the constant flow of peer-review journal publications and their impact; we say yes to science blogs and media & PR necessities; we say yes to increasing specialization and diversification in all disciplines. We also say yes to research feeding back into health care and future prosperity. All of us are in this game, too. However, we maintain that this cannot be all. Science needs time to think. Science needs time to read, and time to fail. Science does not always know what it might be at right now. Science develops unsteadi ly, with jerky moves and un predict able leaps forward—at the same time, however, it creeps about on a very slow time scale, for which there must be room and to which justice must be done. Slow science was pretty much the only science conceivable for hundreds of years; today, we argue, it deserves revival and needs protection. Society should give scientists the time they need, but more importantly, scientists must take their time. We do need time to think. We do need time to digest. We do need time to mis understand each other, especially when fostering lost dialogue between humanities and natural sciences. We cannot continuously tell you what our science means; what it will be good for; because we simply don’t know yet. Science needs time. —Bear with us, while we think. the other signed by academics, publishers, journalists etc. is in german can be found here (http://www.bosch-stiftung.de/content/language1/downloads/Thesenpapier_BWG…) the main bullet points are (i hope i do justice in translation): 1) even if it is against the economic interest of publication houses, the number of publications need to be reduced. 2) since scientific work requires other working rules then business oriented organizations, it needs basic funding. 3) the distribution of funding should be based on the content and objectives of the research, and not on unreflected promises of how the results can be applied in practice. 4) strategic authorship in order to increase the number of publications under the name of the person, in order to increase chances for funding, should be dismissed. 5) researchers should write their own applications for funding, instead of relaying this responsibility to academic consultants/agencies which write standard application documents. 6) the academic competition leads to complex and only lightly evaluated experiments. transparency with respect to data collection and analysis should be ensured to avoid experimental failures due to time pressure. 7) well founded project and research cannot be based on short-term/precarious contracts. notice that despite the somewhat humorously negative reference to social media, the berlin initiative has a facebook page. and, despite the desire to distinguish itself from "business oriented organizations" the document is a result of a discussion that took place at the robert bosch foundation. :) wishing you a nice weekend, s.

CFA. TRANS 12 New Uses of Music in Media
by MARIA AMPARO LASEN DIAZ 10 Jul '11

10 Jul '11

CALL FOR ARTICLES Special Issue: New uses of music in media Trans. Transcultural Music Review ________________________________ TRANS-Transcultural Music Review 16 (2012) will publish a special dossier on the new forms of music in audiovisual media. The dossier will be prepared in collaboration with the research group “Música y medios audiovisuales” from the Society for Ethnomusicology-SIBE/IASPM-Spain and will be edited by Teresa Fraile, Eduardo Viñuela, and María Edurne Zuazu. For this dossier, we are particularly interested in the role of music in the emergence of new genres (such as mash-ups, lip-dubs, etc.) and in the transformation of the discursive strategies of the traditional media (film, TV programs, music videos, video games, etc.). The contemporary audiovisual panorama is constantly changing. On the one hand, there is a fruitful interchange between different genres and formats, such as the dialogue between music, video, advertising and film; an interchange in which the music is deeply involved. This enables music to take different functions in the discourses of these media, thus transforming them, and at the same time, opens a new palette of expressive resources. On the other hand, the spread and democratization of new technologies has brought about these new musical genres that also imply new forms of consumption and point toward a different aesthetic framework. Music is now at the core of a boiling, creative audiovisual production where its relationships with image and the other sound elements are not what they used to be, forcing us to rethink our approaches and understanding of the role of music in media. We welcome contributions that approach these new phenomena and processes, especially those with an interdisciplinary perspective. Some topics include but are not limited to the following: Topics: · Music and the blurring of media genres and formats. · Sound art and image (sound installations, etc.). · Music in film trailers. · Audiovisual formats in live performance. · New forms of consumption and technology. · Rockumentaries or “making of” the album, band, etc. · Production of music for and with mobile technology (cell phones, MP3 players, etc.). · New theoretical models for media analysis. We open the call for submission of articles on this topic. Articles may be written in English, Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese. Deadline for submitting originals: October 15, 2011. Grad student laptop seized at US border

Since some of us may be involved in researching "questionable" (to the USG) groups, I thought this particular tidbit might be useful info to know for AIR'ers who are frequently moving in/out of the USA. --- rick Full article @ http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-08/customs-seizure-of-laptop-at-u-s-b… Student Challenges Laptop Seizure at Border By Tiffany Kary - Jul 9, 2011 12:01 AM ET A U.S. judge is weighing whether to halt a lawsuit filed by a graduate student whose laptop was seized by customs agents as he crossed the border from Canada and found to contain pictures of rallies by Hamas and Hezbollah. < - > The pictures were downloaded from the Internet as part of his research into Shiites in Lebanon, the topic of his doctoral thesis, Abidor said he told the agents. He said he was patted down, handcuffed, taken off the train and held in a cell for three hours before being released without charge. Abidor said he didn’t get his laptop, with the sole copy of his graduate work, for 11 days. When he did, there was evidence that his files, including research, personal photos and chats with his girlfriend, had been searched, he said. The lawsuit was also brought on behalf of the National Press Photographers Association, some of whose 7,000 members have been subject to searches and seizures, according to court papers. The case is Abidor v. Napolitano, 10-cv-04059, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York (Brooklyn). Fwd: [ciresearchers] FW: The Future of NSF
by gene loeb 09 Jul '11

To AIR researchers and their supporters, The following communications asks American researchers and supporters to "immediately" contact their congressional representatives and senators in the United States, to NOT CUT FUNDING, of a United States government entity that funds a large amount of social science research, which has the potential relevance to internet research projects, The U.S government funded organization is "the directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF)." Much of this could involve internet applications in some way and has the potential to involve funding for it much more it it were to continue. At a minimum, even if not directly referring to internet reearch, at least it creates an atmosphere of support and respect for such research and application. These notes and communications are especially pertinent to the research community in the United States, but have a wider significance because of lessons they hold for scientists in other nations.. Thanks for reading and responding. gene ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: gene loeb <geneloeb(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Jul 9, 2011 at 1:07 AM Subject: Re: [ciresearchers] FW: The Future of NSF To: ciresearchers(a)vancouvercommunity.net, michael gurstein < gurstein(a)gmail.com> Dr. Gurstein and all, This is one of the most significant things I have read from our group, and incudes extremely important and useful information about our research and policies in the United States that affect much of it. I didn't realize all of the information given. I urge all that can, especially in the United States, write their congressional representatives and senators immediately, even if it doesn't appear to directly affect them. As these writings demonstrate, we may not be aware of how our research may be affected if only by the climate or attitures of potential supportors. Probably not the best person to comment on this but IMO unless access to whatever is said is physically restricted - by a password, or encryption, say - then its only private through performative magic or convention, not fact: it can easily become public through reproduction, however small the original audience. cheers, Mathieu On 07/08/11, Ulf-Dietrich Reips <u.reips(a)ikerbasque.org> wrote: > so, in the widest sense. very well. imho answers to your questions need to take into account that there are degrees of 'public' and 'private' (and 'published' and even 'internet'). public to one person using one type of service in one bit of the internet will not be public to many others etc. same for the other terms, even internet, ask my connected fridge whose content may be private and unpublished > > At 22:10 Uhr +0100 8.7.2011, jeremy hunsinger wrote: > >by the internet i mean anything attached to the network of networks with a locatable address, etc. so i meant, content on the 'internet' > > _______________________________________________ > The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list > is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org > Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > > Join the Association of Internet Researchers: > http://www.aoir.org/ > > -- **** Dr Mathieu O'Neil Adjunct Research Fellow Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute College of Arts and Social Science The Australian National University email: mathieu.oneil[at]anu.edu.au web: http://adsri.anu.edu.au/people/visitors/mathieu.php
