by John McAuley 05 Jul '11

05 Jul '11

Hey all, I am conducting a content analysis of comments on a weblog but am unsure of how to determine sample size? Has anyone run into similar issues and, if so, could they point me to a suitable paper or two? They are seen as promising ideas for the vitalisation of citizens’ interest in politics, but also for economic and scientific innovation. These developments are expected to lead to more engagement and collaboration within public institutions and the development of respective tools and services. Topics include, but are not limited to: The transformation of governments and politics through Open Government Public policies for open information and adaption New forms of content production and collaboration The changing relation between the citizen, the state and ICT The challenges, hurdles and risks of Open Data and open information Strategies of publishing information and their evaluation Re-examination of the concept of the Digital Divide with view to open information policies Governmentality and surveillance, data privacy and protection Issues and cases of Open Government Data for the provision of added value services Technological and organizational issues of existing Open Government Data initiatives such as data.gov and data.gov.uk In particular, the call wishes to address the following questions on the intersection of social sciences and technology: Has the emphasis on openness brought new imperatives and state philosophies on the table? To what extent will it influence existing cultures and politics? How are these concepts perceived and evaluated by politicians and stakeholders? What is the future of Open Data and open information in an era of budgetary constraints? Which new technical developments based on open information are promising and why? What is the effect on the increasing use of Data on the Digital Divide (Open Data Divide) or content production (Data journalism)? How can Open Government Data applications transform our everyday life? Which strategies of implementation and policy making are known and should be applied? I Read Where I Am -- Exporing New Information Cultures
by Geert Lovink 04 Jul '11

04 Jul '11

http://www.valiz.nl/en/IReadWhereIAm I Read Where I Am contains visionary texts about the future of reading and the status of the word. We read anytime and anywhere. We read of screens, we read out on the streets, we read in the office but less and less we read a book at home on the couch. We are, or are becoming, a different type of reader. The question remains which shape will it take and what experience does one want? To answer all these (and other) questions we have asked people from different backgrounds, subject to the aforementioned changes, to think about these issues. I Read Where I Am collects 82 diverse observations, inspirations and critical notes by journalists, designers, researchers, politicians, philosophers and many others. • How will we grapple with compressed narratives and the fluid bombardment of text? • What are the dialectics between image and word? • How will our information machines generate new reading cultures? • Can reading become a live, mobile social experience? Text/authors: Arie Altena, Henk Blanken, Andrew Blauvelt, Erwin Blom, James Bridle, Max Bruinsma & 76 other authors Editors: Mieke Gerritzen, Geert Lovink, Minke Kampman isbn: 978-90-78088-55-4 17,50 euros All texts also online available here: http://www.ireadwhereiam.com/

Re: [Air-L] Egypt: The First Internet Revolt?
by Jay Hauben 01 Jul '11

Hi, People interested in the role of netizens in the recent events in Egypt might be interested in the article, "Netizens in Egypt and the Republic of Tahrir Square" written in March 2011 and online at: http://blogs.taz.de/netizenblog/2011/03/16/netizens_egypt_tahrir_square/ This article traces some of the history of online activities which contributed to the strength of the revolt that Xiaolin Zhuo, Justine Yu and Barry Wellman analyze. The references in this article are helpful in more fully understanding the relatively long time that netizens have been active in Egypt. Take care.
