Twitter Timeline Limits
by David Jones 15 May '11

15 May '11

Hi all, I'm working on a project with some colleagues regarding Twitter use and hashtags, and we are looking for a key piece of information: how long tweets are publicly viewable. Twitter's site used to say they were available "approximately 10 days." But now, there's no reference to this limit at all. The closest information I can find is that they now allow users to view 3200 of their most recent tweets. Does anyone know if Twitter has changed this limitation? Or where I might find more up-to-date information on this issue? We would deeply appreciate any help. Thanks, Dave Jones PhD Candidate Professional Writing and New Media Old Dominion University Chair, SIGDOC ODU djone111(a)odu.edu

[Submission deadline has been extended to May 27, 2011] [Selected papers will be invited to submit their extended work to special issue in the International Journal of Arts and Technology (IJART)] [Apologies if you receive multiple times, please circulate this to your colleagues and graduate students who might be interested in this, thank you so much.] ------- Call for Papers for ICCE 2011-C5 Subconference ----------- ICCE Conference on Game and Toy Enhanced Learning and Society (GTEL&S) November 28, 2011 (Monday) to December 2, 2011 (Friday) Chiang Mai, Thailand http://www.nectec.or.th/icce2011/callForPapers/cfp_c5.html Organized by Asia Pacific Society for Computers in Education http://apsce.net Hosted by National Electronics and Computer Technology Center, Thailand http://www.nectec.or.th In response to the emerging research diversity, ICCE2010 will be a meta-conference, a conference of collocated theme-based conferences. This is the Call for Papers for the theme-based conference, C5: ICCE Conference on GTEL&S, standing for 'Game and Toy Enhanced Learning and Soceity'. The spurring interest in deriving pedagogical principles and design from video games and digital toys offers a new angle of designing 'how to learn' in the future. More specifically, GTEL&S puts 'why to learn' (motivation and engagement) as a prominent element in our design. How to relate that element with other elements: 'how well to learn' (learning performance), 'what to learn' (domain knowledge), 'what to learn with' (computer programs or digital toys, virtual characters or robots), 'where to learn' (physical settings or online), and 'who to learn with' (individuals or teams) are the fundamental issues of investigation. Such endeavor will lead to significant extension of the horizon of technology enhanced learning research. Re: [Air-L] a question about privacy protection and copyright in Internet research
by Niels Brügger 14 May '11

14 May '11

Hi all, Just a short comment about the privacy debate, once again. There definitely exist differences between national traditions on this issue (as I have maintained in previous emails). And these differences may (also) be identified as differences between scholarly disciplines and theories about why we keep things, for instance as datasets or in (web)archives, and how we should use them as researchers afterwards. On the one hand, an approach which mainly is used within disciplines inspired by the social sciences where focus is often on acquiring information about individuals and/or groups of individuals, often 'sensible' information, and here one of the main concerns can be to protect privacy. And, on the other, the approach of archiving institutions who take their point of departure in the idea that we should preserve whatever has been made public, and here the main concern is to attest what was made public, be that on paper, as sound waves, images, or whatever. When people have made things public they have made them public, and the privacy issue is mainly about things that have been made public by someone who should not have made it public, for instance medical information put on the web by accident, private photos, etc.; and if it was illegal then, it's also illegal later and this material must then be protected in the web archive (however, a number of practical issues are related to doing this). But the fundamental rationale for the cultural heritage institutions such as national libraries is that they shall preserve whatever has been made public. In the country where I come from (Denmark) this has been done since the 17th century, based on a legal deposit law, first print, then radio and television, and now the web (similar laws can be found in many other countries). The fundamental distinction, at least as far as I'm concerned, is between scientific data and publications (close to Jeremy's distinction "published documents are not a matter of human subjects"): scientific data are created by researchers for research purposes and may need privacy concerns, whereas publications are - well, public. And if people don't want things to be public don't put it out there. There may, of course, be difficulties in determining whether things are public on the web or not, but, in general, if everyone could get acces to it, it's public. However, the main challenge is probably to inform people that they actually publish things on the web. Ignite-IR 12.0, Call for Proposals
by Alex Halavais 14 May '11

14 May '11

Call for Proposals: Ignite-IR, Internet Research 12.0, Seattle, Washington, October 10-13, 2011 Given the theme this year, "Performance and Participation," it seemed a particularly good time to introduce a new format of presentation to the Internet Research conference. The "Ignite" presentation is a structured, high-energy, short talk in which you share your passion and creative ideas about internet research. If you are excited about a new perspective, an issue, or a practice taking place on the internet, this is the place to get others excited about it as well. Like pecha-kucha, Ignite is formed around a formalism: you must create a "deck" of 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds. This represents a radical departure from the traditional paper presentation, and is focused on telling an enlightening story, making an argument, and inciting an audience to come to your way of thinking and action. Keep the logos, but add pathos: humor, wit, rhetorical (and physical) stunts are encouraged. It's academic stand-up. If you are one of the several dozen people that were in the backchannel last year complaining about boring PowerPoint presentations, here's where the rubber meets the road. Show us what you can do! The Ignite format of talks started in Seattle, but by now there are thousands of people who have given them. Many of these can be found here: http://igniteshow.com/ You might also take a look at: http://www.speakerconfessions.com/2009/06/how-to-give-a-great-ignite-talk/ Some things to note: * You may propose an Ignite-IR talk even if you already have a paper accepted--it does not count against your presentation cap. * While it can be related to a later research talk, it should not be a "preview"--the Ignite-IR talk should stand on its own. * The deadline for your proposal is midnight, July 31. * If your proposal is accepted, your deck of 20 slides is due no later than September 15. Are you ready to go beyond talking about performance and perform‽ Are you ready to share the passion and excitement of Internet Research‽ Then propose a five-minute Ignite Talk! Go here to fill out a proposal: http://bit.ly/ignite-ir12 Please share widely!

Where, when, how, and even what we are learning is changing. Digital learning is not only taking place online or in the university classroom but is also situated in museums, after school programs, living rooms, public libraries and peer-to-peer universities. The future of learning will not be solely determined by digital culture but by the re-organization of power relationships and institutional protocols. MobilityShifts will bring together leading scholars, artists, web developers, technologists, teachers, librarians, policy makers, critical legal scholars and learning activists to discuss how digital media can play a positive role in this process of transformation. Comprised of a conference, exhibition, workshops, project demos and a theater performance, this summit will add an international layer to the existing debate about digital fluencies for a mobile world and learning outside the bounds of traditional institutions of higher education. Drawing on New York City’s strengths as a global hub for learning, innovation and design, the summit will showcase theories, people and projects making unexpected connections between self-learning, mobile platforms and the Open Web. Learn, discuss, laugh, write mini-manifestos, record videos, conduct interviews and meet future collaborators.
