Call for Papers in New Media & Society: Search! Navigating the World’s Information
by Mark Graham 19 May '11

Call for Papers: Search! Navigating the World’s Information * * *Special issue edited by:* Mark Graham (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) Ralph Schroeder (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) Greg Taylor (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) We invite submission of original, unpublished articles for a proposed special themed issue of New Media & Society on the topic of Internet search. Abstracts of 500 words length are invited in the first instance. Selected authors will then be included in a full proposal to be submitted to the editors of New Media & Society. Final papers should be around 8000 words (inclusive of abstract and references) and will be subject to the full New Media & Society review process. *About the Special Issue’s Theme:* Never before have so many people engaged in practices of information search. Hundreds of millions of searches are performed every day through the Internet. Searches connect us to information that helps us find the best route through a city, allows us to learn about a debilitating illness, and links us to videos of cats playing pianos. We can now search for words, numbers, images, videos, pictures, sounds, places, maps, directions, people, stories and products. Search is a process of separating the visible from the invisible, the relevant from the irrelevant, and the knowable from the unknowable. Search also entails power: the power to access and shape information. Digital searches mediate our interactions with both an enormous, networked store of knowledge, and with the material places that we inhabit. Practices, algorithms, and rules of search govern the content, ideas, places, and opportunities to which users are exposed. In order to begin a more inter-disciplinary discussion on the role of Internet search in contemporary society, this special issue aims to bring together a range of contributors that analyze how search works from various social science perspectives, including law, geography, political science, sociology of science, and economics. It will bring these to bear on understanding the most significant social, economic, political, geographic and ethical transformations that have been brought about by widespread practices of search. This special issue seeks qualitative and quantitative studies as well as discourse and policy analyses of information and Internet search in the broadest sense. Examples of topical issues in this area include, but are not limited to: · How is indexing, optimizing, sorting, coding and ranking altering the ways in which we access information? · How do people, places and groups benefit from a world in which search is a central means of information access, and who is left out of those benefits? · How does search influence offline interactions? · Are widespread practices of search facilitating shifts in political, economic and social power? · How does search shape consumer and producer product market outcomes? · How does the nature of search shape the competitive landscape of the Internet search industry? · What are the social implications of the organisation of sponsored search markets? · Are search engines a force for democratisation? · What are the subversive potentials and possibilities of search? · What are the politics of search engine censorship? · What are the distinct cultural practices and geographic biases of search? Deadline for abstracts: Jul 20, 2011 Deadline for submission of full papers: Jan 15, 2012 For more information, or to submit an abstract, please contact: Mark Graham – mark.graham(a)oii.ox.ac.uk Ralph Schroeder – ralph.schroeder(a)oii.ox.ac.uk Greg Taylor – greg.taylor(a)oii.ox.ac.uk ------------------------------------------ Mark Graham, Ph.D. Research Fellow Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford 1 St Giles Oxford OX1 3JS United Kingdom Telephone +44 (0) 1865 287 203 Fax +44 (0) 1865 287 211 http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham www.geospace.co.uk www.wikichains.com twitter.com/geoplace

Academic Publishers Ask The Impossible In GSU Copyright Suit
by Richard Forno 19 May '11

19 May '11

Here we go again ...... --- rick Academic Publishers Ask The Impossible In GSU Copyright Suit http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/05/19/0248238/Academic-Publishers-Ask-The… A Duke University blog covers the possible ramifications of a motion in the copyright case against Georgia State University. Cambrigde, Oxford, and Sage have proposed an injunction that would first enjoin GSU to include all faculty, employees, students. All copying would have to be monitored and limited to 10% of a work or 1000 words, whichever is less. No two classes would be allowed to use the same copied work unless they paid for it, essentially taking fair use out of the classroom. Along with this, courses would be allowed to be made up of only 10% copied material, the other 90% must be either purchased works or copies that have been paid for by permission fees. And, if this isn't enough, the publishers also want access to all computer systems on the campus network, to monitor compliance and copying. 'This proposed order, in short, represents a nightmare, a true dystopia, for higher education....Yet you can be sure that if [these] things happen, all of our campuses would be pressured to adopt the "Georgia State model" in order to avoid litigation.' Disclosure: I am currently a graduate student at Georgia State University." More@ http://blogs.library.duke.edu/scholcomm/2011/05/13/a-nightmare-scenario-for…

Call for Papers: Media Transatlantic IV – Traffic
by Theo Röhle 19 May '11

19 May '11

Call for papers Media Transatlantic IV – Traffic March 29 – 31, 2012 University of Paderborn, Germany Harold Innis taught us to look at the media as a form of traffic. Media products/signs travel just like things and people; constantly flowing, they overcome space and time, partly on communal and partly on dedicated networks. Traffic is the sum of its parts, made up of an infinite number of acts of transport and transfer. It is, however, more than that, because traffic has its own logic and forms its own structures and rules. Traffic is frequently compared with water: it finds a way, forms trickles, raging currents and dissipative structures. In certain places it collects, accumulates, stands still; or seeps away. Traffic and sign traffic cannot be stopped: they overcome any obstacle, penetrate everything and wear away anything fixed: one can plan, steer and direct them, but probably not control them. Sign traffic poses a particular problem when it comes to observation. There is no “royal over-looking position” from which there would be a view of the entire proceedings; it is difficult to describe in qualitative terms, while empirical approaches must rely on counting. This conference is intended to take up the image proposed by Innis and view the media as a form of traffic. To this end, the following questions, for example, are of relevance: • Which media phenomena can be described in traffic terms more accurately than in another perspective? Is it just a metaphor, or more? • Which conceptions of traffic are represented in which fields of knowledge? Which of them are viable in an analysis of the media? • Is a comprehensive traffic science, encompassing the traffic of commodities, people and signs alike, conceivable? • Would this be identical to a kind of media ‘logistics’? Or to a theory about society on the whole, if Marx speaks of ‘forms of intercourse’ and Luhmann of ‘communication’? • Which associations do the different connotations of the term entail? In English drug traffic, illicit transactions und air traffic control, in German communication in general, and sexual intercourse… • What is the relationship between traffic and infrastructure? Is traffic only possible on the basis of established infrastructures, or does infrastructure come as a consequence of traffic’s requirements? What is the relationship between traffic and technology? • Are there specific economic rules that steer the flow of traffic? • Does traffic –as an adaptive system– allow for a bridging of media theory, fluid dynamics and the analysis of complex systems? • What do network theories contribute to the understanding of sign traffic? • What role does storage –Innis refers to staple production– play in relation to flow and traffic? • Are there also traffic accidents, tail-backs or blocks in the media sphere? The scheduled conference continues a series of events, which started in 2007 and aim to bring together media scholars from the USA, Canada and Germany: - Re-Reading McLuhan: An International Conference on Media and Culture in the 21st Century, Feb. 14-18, 2007, Schloss Thurnau, University of Bayreuth, Germany Hosts: Klaus Benesch, Kerstin Schmidt, Martina Leeker, Derrick de Kerckhove Publ.: de Kerckhove, Derrick; Leeker, Martina; Schmidt, Kerstin (ed.): McLuhan neu lesen. MedieKultur: 2nd Call for papers: Media, Empowerment and Democracy in the Global South
by Ditte Laursen 18 May '11

18 May '11

MedieKultur. Journal of media and communication research Thematic focus: Media, Empowerment and Democracy in the Global South Editors: Poul Erik Nielsen (guest editor, Aarhus University), Norbert Wildermuth (Roskilde University) Submission deadline: SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 Publication date: Spring 2012 With the advent of web 2.0 and with the spread of mobile phones on a global base, conditions for and processes of citizen participation, public debate and social critique are changing. Information and Communication Technologies’ potential role in articulating citizen actions has been discussed in reference to recent events, such as the oppositional demonstrations in Tibet, Burma and Iran. However, while the use of social media and mobile phones in these events has received global attention, their de facto scope for democratic empowerment is contested and in need of further exploration. Other attempts to tap into the communicative potential of digital network media for the purpose of civic engagement, political deliberation and mobilisation for social change are furthered by web-based applications, such as Ushahidi, which played a prominent role during the 2008 post-election crisis in Kenya in crowdsourcing crisis information. Avaaz.org, a global campaign and petition network with more than 6 million members from over one-hundred countries, is another prominent example of the transformative power of e-mobilisation, which exemplifies the global-local nexus at the heart of e-participation and -mobilisation strategies. These ‘new’ developments, exciting as they are, run not only the danger of being interpreted in overtly optimistic and techno-centric terms, but also of diverting attention from the continued relevance of other mass, community and citizen media in contributing to communicative efforts for democratisation, empowerment and social change. The planned issue of MedieKultur therefore invites papers that discuss the present role of both Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and other media in an admittedly altered media environment. Communicative efforts to further democratic development and the empowerment of disenfranchised and marginalised populations demand scholarly attention to the lessons learned by ‘conventional’ media development and ICT-based initiatives. We thus invite papers with a thematic and theoretical focus on civil society based forms of communication for democratic deliberation and empowerment, in the broadest sense. Case studies and attempts to develop theoretical conceptualisations should explore relationships between media and communication developments, civil society, citizens’ engagement and governance processes. Papers with a focus on such issues in the context of the Global South are of specific interest. www.mediekultur.dk -- Ditte Laursen Forsker i medier, ph.d. / Media researcher, Ph.D. STATSBIBLIOTEKET / STATE AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Universitetsparken Dk - 8000 Århus C Tlf. / Phone +45 89462060 CVR / SE / VAT No. DK 10100682 - EAN 5798000791084 http://statsbiblioteket.dk http://www.dittelaursen.dk

AoIR Executive Officer Positions, Candidate Statements
by Alex Halavais 16 May '11

16 May '11

Hello, everyone, I've just posted the statements by candidates for the position of VP of AoIR (who becomes president after two years of service of VP), and for Student Representative. The links appear below. Catherine and Michael have agreed to serve another term, and are running unopposed for the positions of secretary and treasurer, respectively. I strongly encourage you to ask questions of these candidates, and openly discuss their plans for the present and future of the organization. The statements alone are rarely enough to judge the ways in which they will lead AoIR. A vibrant discussion is not just good for the election, it's good for the health of the organization, and a good way for those of us who are not running to know what is on the mind of the membership. I encourage you to leave questions or comments on the candidates statements on the website, or if you would prefer, to post them here to AIR-L. In the latter case, I will attempt to do a bit of copy-pasty back over to the website so we have an easily found record. I'll be posting the candidates for the open seats shortly. And the officer candidates are... VICE-PRESIDENT Ted Coopman - http://aoir.org/2011/05/13/ted-m-coopman-candidate-for-vice-president/ Lori Kendall - http://aoir.org/2011/05/13/lori-kendall-candidate-for-vice-president/ Monica Murero - http://aoir.org/2011/05/13/monica-murero-candidate-for-vice-president/ STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE Anthony Hoffman - http://aoir.org/2011/05/13/anthony-hoffman-candidate-for-student-representa… Trent Kays - http://aoir.org/2011/05/13/trent-kays-candidate-for-student-representative/ Kelly Quinn - http://aoir.org/2011/05/13/kelly-quinn-candidate-for-student-representative/ TREASURER Michael Zimmer (acclaimed) SECRETARY Catherine Middleton (acclaimed) Best, Alex Halavais
