The new Virtual College is managed by Virtual administrators and instruction is delivered by Virtual faculty. Virtual students are mainly non-traditional students in a demographic that is increasingly female and in an older age group. Virtual college faculty, guiding courses delivered entirely online, face an interesting set of unprecedented challenges: they may never meet their students, they may teach for multiple virtual colleges, and they may never have face-to-face interactions with the inhabitants of the institutions at which they teach. These changes have important implications for the nature, quality and management of online curricular and courses development, and online instruction. There is an increasing awareness that, indeed, online learning carries with it far-reaching implications on all aspects of higher education. Quantitative and qualitative research and scholarly reflection which examines these phenomena is invited. Teaching online, part-time online adjuncts, instructional quality, the management of distance education programs, organizational structures in distance education organizations, faculty workload issues, policy issues, and the economic and social impact of these phenomena are all invited topics. Other related topics are also accepted. New report: Citizens in @ction: Social media and civic engagement in Indonesia

Dear AoIR members For you who are interested, I would like to let you know that a new report on social media and civil engagement in Indonesia has just been launched. All best, yanuar ------------ CITIZENS IN @CTION Indonesia is booming on social media. It has the second largest population on Facebook and also scores second on the amount of tweeps in Asia. Recently Hivos and University of Manchester's Institute of Innovation Research (MIOIR) carried out a research into the way civil society organisations and groups engage in civic activism by means of the use of Internet and social media in Indonesia. This research shows how various civic engagements impact the shaping of the civil society in the country, and more importantly, social change. It contributes to the overall debate on the use of social media and civil society organizations in Indonesia in particular and global at large. The report “Citizens in @ction” was launched in Manchester on the 4th of April 2011. Call for papers/book chapters The center for Digital Ethics & Policy at Loyola University Chicago (digitalethics.org) will be holding a Digital Ethics Symposium on October 28th, 2011. We are looking for papers on digital ethics which would first be presented at the symposium, with the best of those then included in an edited volume on digital ethics. Authors of accepted papers will be eligible for up to $400 in travel funds to be able to attend the Chicago symposium. The author(s) of the top student paper will be eligible for up to $1,000 in travel funds. The paper might be on topics such as privacy, anonymity, griefing, free speech, intellectual property, hacking, scamming, surveillance, information mining, transparency, digital citizenship, or anything else relating to ethical questions and digital technology. Abstracts are due by midnight CST on June 30th, 2011., should follow APA or MLA style and be no longer than 500 words, not including references. Send your submission in a MS Word document attachment to contact(a)digitalethics.org, and please write Digital Ethics Symposium submission in the subject line. Have you nominated someone today?

Today is the final day for nominations (and self-nominations!) for AoIR officers. I am the current vice-president, and am honored to be taking over for Mia as president in Seattle this September. I'm writing mainly to say that if you are thinking about running you probably should. I ran for two reasons. First, for me--like, I suspect, for many of you--AoIR has served as a scholarly home, a place to work through ideas, methods, and approaches that might not have been as familiar in my own department or discipline. I've been involved in this Association, and benefited from the work of the volunteers that make it work, since I was a graduate student. I felt obligated to follow those who had put time into making it work.. And second, I wanted to make it work better. In particular, I wanted to focus on the role of AoIR in disseminating the best research and helping to incubate that research, the two things I think are at the core of what AoIR does. I also wanted to make the machinery of the Association work better. I have particular ideas about how these things should happen, and I'll continue to pursue those through over the rest of my term. You might agree with my ideas of what AoIR should be, in which case you should join me on Exec to help make them happen. You might disagree with these ideas, in which case you should join me on Exec to make sure you influence of AoIR in another direction. Either way, you should run for Exec, because in running you get the opportunity to talk about what you think AoIR should be, and others get a chance to think about that when they read your statement and ask questions and discuss the future of our Association. Those of us on the Exec now have a vested interest in handing the reigns over to a great group of new members of the Executive Committee. We're happy to answer questions narrow or broad about any of the positions. I know this comes near the 11th hour, but if you are on the fence, throw your hat in the ring (mixed metaphor FTW). Thanks. --Danny The Velvet Light Trap #70 CFP: Stocks, Screens, and Servers: The Materiality of Media As culture becomes increasingly digitized— from downloading and streaming videos and music to digital film production and cloud computing— arguments for the “dematerialization” of media are becoming commonplace. However, media have always been, and remain, embedded in and structured by material objects, networks, and practices that delimit their uses and meanings. Any cultural artifact bears traces and consequences of the material conditions of its production, distribution, and reception, whether the size and weight of the camera that shot a film’s images, the geography of the shipping or cable network through which it was transported or transmitted, or the spaces occupied by physical record or DVD collections. Even ostensibly “dematerialized” digital media find material existence in hard disks, server farms, and wires— as well as in the proliferation of new media devices, from smart phones to iPads. The perception of the diminished materiality of media presents us with an opportunity to reconsider (and reaffirm) the material dimensions of media, both in terms of the present moment and from an historical perspective. To this end, The Velvet Light Trap seeks articles considering the implications of the materiality of media, welcoming studies of film, television, and new media from a range of approaches— including historical, theoretical, ethnographic, and/or textual. Potential areas of inquiry include (but are by no means limited to): - the effects of technological and other material factors on film/media craft practices and style - screen technologies and other exhibition devices, old and new - issues in the political economy of the manufacture and disposal of media objects and devices (e.g., labor conditions, e-waste) - logics and operations of physical networks of distribution and transmission - media infrastructures and cultural geography - physical interactivity with media interfaces - the imitation of material objects in the digital realm (e.g., album art and liner notes) - the resurgence of physical formats once presumed ‘dead’ (e.g., vinyl, cassette tapes) - material dimensions of reception and fandom (e.g., collecting, scrapbooking) - the aestheticization of media commodities - materiality, memory, and nostalgia - material media objects, cultural capital, and taste - material collections, archiving, and film/media historiography - the exploration of materiality by particular artists and/or texts - materiality and avant-garde cinema - media materiality and policy Submissions should be between 6,000 and 7,500 words (approximately 20-25 pages double-spaced), in MLA style. Please submit one electronic copy of the paper, along with a one-page abstract, saved as a Word .doc file; remove any identifying information so that the submission is suitable for anonymous review.
