A good place to start would be this: Ess, C. & AoIR ethics working committee, 2002. Ethical decision-making and Internet research: Recommendations from the aoir ethics working committee, Available at: www.aoir.org/reports/ethics.pdf [Accessed March 7, 2008]. The ethics of online research has often been debated on this list, if you search the archives you may find answers to some of your questions. My IRB is currently unsure about the types of consent I should obtain from these young people and whether parental consent must be obtained and how I would go about collecting those signatures. I would like to work with 14-17 year olds from different geographic areas, so face to face interviews would be a challenge. Any advice? Thank you in advance

Advances in knowledge modeling and representation, the semantic web, data mining, analytics, and open data form a foundation for new models of knowledge development and analysis. The technical complexity of this nascent field is paralleled by a transition within the full spectrum of learning (education, work place learning, informal learning) to social, networked learning. These technical, pedagogical, and social domains must be brought into dialogue with each other to ensure that interventions and organizational systems serve the needs of all stakeholders. This workshop will focus on online or technology mediated settings in which learner interaction data can be collected automatically. The growth of this kind of data currently surpasses the ability of organizations to make sense of it. This concern is particularly pronounced in relation to knowledge, teaching, and learning in educational, work place, and informal settings. Learning institutions and corporations make little use of the data learners generate in the process of accessing learning materials, interacting with educators and peers, and creating new content. Tools that build on theoretical and methodological principles of learning analytics, and that harness the rapidly emerging developments in analytics in general, promise important applications in educational planning, whether for change at course and institutional levels, or for generating insights for the learning sciences. Such applications also extend beyond educational institutions as corporations face pressure for increased competitiveness and productivity, a challenge that requires important contributions in organizational capacity building from workplace, formal, informal, and non-formal learning. Also, as we witness the expansion of learning and knowledge work beyond formal institutional boundaries onto the Internet, we will also find that myriad platforms in the cloud that host learning activity by individuals as a core or side consideration will be able to make use of learning analytics applications and ideas. This will be a "working-shop", not a mini-conference of paper presentations. We will begin with introductions and two or three presentations that frame the emerging area of Learning Analytics. The rest of the day will include brief presentations on key issues and substantial opportunities for panel, full group and small group discussion. The final format and schedule will be determined based on participant proposals. Our objective is twofold: 1) to recruit members of the HICSS community to this new international community initiative, and 2) to further identify and organize research strands around which future collaborations might form. The workshop will also prepare participants for the Learning Analytics & Networked Learning minitrack and related minitracks, in terms of both content and familiarity with each other. All interested participants are welcome. We ask participants to prepare a 1- page paper summarizing their backgrounds and interests in attending this workshop. Optionally, a second separate page may be added to propose activities participants would like to engage in at the workshop, and their role in these activities. Submissions should be sent to the lead workshop organizers, George Siemens (gsiemens(a)gmail.com) and Dan Suthers (suthers(a)hawaii.edu) by November 30, 2011. The background/interest pages will be circulated to all participants at the workshop, and used to frame presentations and discussions. .. oh and of course the whole idea of cybersex- techno-sex etc has been mentioned in popular culture for a very long time.. (Barbarella.. The academic history of cybersex extends far back to the Internet's beginnings - lists/MUDs/BBS - and was far more popular back in the 90's than now (when seemingly questions of addiction etc take over apart from Attwood's recent revisit). Television in a digital era
by Jo Pierson 25 May '11

Special Issue announcement Television in a digital era - Usage and policy issues Jo Pierson, Joke Bauwens and David Geerts (eds.) Telematics and Informatics - An interdisciplinary journal on the social impacts of new technologies November 2011 ISSN 0736-5853 Elsevier published the Special Issue 'Television in a digital era - Usage and policy issues ' (Guest Editors Jo Pierson, Joke Bauwens and David Geerts) Volume 28 Issue 4 of 'Telematics and Informatics' Journal (Editor-in-Chief Jan Servaes) Synopsis: In drawing and examining the social-cultural, industry and policy processes that accompany the digitization of television, this special issue aims to contribute to a multi-faceted understanding of the conditions and forces that cause the changes and orient the evolution of digital broadcasting. From the empirical evidence and observation presented in the articles we learn that change is never instant, but nevertheless from time to time rapid; that structures sometimes impede change, sometimes speed it up; that television still is television to many people, and at the same time breaks free from its traditional meaning. In dealing with all these juxtapositions this special issue aims to give an informed account of how social institutions, i.e. citizens, consumers, policymakers, industrialists and engineers, are dealing with television’s changes. Within a few decades this will be history, or at best, relevant source material for a historiography of digital television. Contents: Introduction: Ready for use? An old medium in new times (J. Bauwens, J. Pierson and D. Geerts) The promises of iDTV: Between push marketing and consumer needs (W. Van den Broeck, J. Bauwens and J. Pierson) Acceptance and rejection of mobile TV among young adults: A case of college students in South Korea (H. Lee, D. Kim, J. Ryu and S. Lee) Video mediated social interaction between groups: System requirements and technology challenges (D. Williams, M.F. Ursu, J. Meenowa, P. Cesar, I. Kegel and K. Bergström) A Living Lab research approach for mobile TV (D. Schuurman, K. De Moor, L. De Marez and T. Evens) From high hopes to high deficit and back: A historic overview of Europe's HDTV policy and reflections towards the future of HDTV (N. Walravens and C. Cyberactivism, twitter and elections in Venezuela. Research
by Daniela Artigas Avila 25 May '11

25 May '11

This is the abstract of the latest project we have been doing, is about cyberactivism, venezuelan elections and Twitter. If some of you are interested or working with similar categories, please, let us know. We have some methodological issues to solve. More about the investigation program here (in spanish) www.apropiacion.blogspot.com *Abstract* This research aims to describe the routines developed by the users of twitter during the Venezuelan elections. It relies on the contributions of Boyd (2005), Masten and Plowman (2003) and FAO (2011) related to digital ethnography and passive observation and study methods and techniques appropriate for the work that seeks to shape and characterize participants a specific community, we also considered the research of Gonzalez (2005) and Rheingold (2002) about cyberactivism, and smart mobs. Data collection was performed with the tool The Archivist, and was the processed with the statistical software named CAVanaTuit. Among the first results we noted that the Venezuelans have developed a series of practices, games and behaviors that run regularly during the electoral day , it was observed that people become digital reporters during the establishment of voting centers, voting and the vote count. Among the most used tags, besides #26S, we found and organize by frequency of appearance: #Venezuela, #Cuba, #ElNacional, #cosasquepasaranantesdelboletín #fuerafocas. Re: [Air-L] Research

Hi Kattie, I recently went through the same process with my IRB, so maybe I can help. 1. Participant observation in "public areas" was not a major issue as far as consent concerned. 2. Participant observation in "guilds" is done with the consent of the guild master (usually announcement on guild website). Guild members/participants have the option to op-out. 3. Interviewing 13-17. Usually happens in VOIP settings. Participants first visit my research site and read the "Assent Form". This form asks them to talk to their parents about the research and ask questions, etc. Once the interview is scheduled, I try to speak with a parent/legal guardian. This part only takes a couple minutes and aimed at gathering verbal parental consent. If parent/guardian is not available, I reschedule the interview and try to get an email permission from the parent. The procedure with the IRB was pretty tedious. If you have specific questions, please email me off-list. Cheers. ~andras On Tue, May 24, 2011 at 10:07 AM, kattie hogan <hogankattie(a)yahoo.com>wrote ( mailto:hogankattie@yahoo.com ): > I am currently a doctorate student and my interest is online adolescent > identity performances. Methodology Question Help
by Nikki Usher 24 May '11

Hiya: I don't think this got picked up? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Nikki Usher <nikki.usher(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:03 PM Subject: Methodology Question Help To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Hi: Normally I recruit subjects for interviews in person, but this time I'm using email and I'm having a little trouble figuring out what the best practices are for methodology. Let me explain about how we got our sample without giving TOO many details since one of you might be a kind reviewer. As you may have gathered by now, I write about new media and journalism. 1) An organization provided us a list of news articles with just their headlines. 84 articles in total. So we had to find the bylines, emails and contact information. journalists are typically regarded as public figures by the IRB on account of their publishing activities and public persona. The people we were able to find and contact all had Web sites promoting their work with email addresses, etc. 2) We recruited participants via email using IRB approved language (obvs) - we were able to get approx. 34 email addresses from this initial data set - and so far have 15 respondents. We have promised to keep their responses anonymous, though the "star" of the effort is now a known quantity and would be identified as such by her responses, so she's OK with us using her name. 3) We are almost close to saturation with the thematic interview responses but we'd like more interviews to be sure. We also think a potential reviewer would think "15, really, that's super small." We are conducting some follow up emails with this first batch of email addresses. Our concern here is self-selection of respondents. However, isn't self-selection always the concern with interviews (Weiss - talking to strangers, Silverman, etc. etc.)? I just don't know what we should do about response rate because I don't normally recruit over email to a widely dispersed group of people who don't have any connection to each other. In a real life organization, you might say, talk to 15 of the reporters who all have something in common that you've been able to observe, or select to interview people based on hierarchy. 4) We have *another *data set where if we can't get saturation we can look for participants but it is much larger (about 150) - from a second wave of the organization's story output. Would we need to send out emails to all of these journalists to remain consistent, or could we just approach the first, say, dozen, going by date of story publication until we got saturation? Or would we have to start over and email EVERYONE? We are pretty sure we will reach saturation of themes quite soon. Another Question for Candidates from Joseph K.
by Alex Halavais 24 May '11

24 May '11

As a note, I'm sending these out to AIR-L again, because I think it's important that folks are involved in the election process, but I do encourage you to go to http://aoir.org for some individual questions, comments, links to blog posts, and personal statements. JOSEPH K. asked the following question to almost (!) all the candidates for AoIR Executive positions. """ What concrete tasks or changes to the organization would you aim to put in place during your first 90 days in office? """ So, once again, a round-up... ***** TED COOPMAN (VP candidate) ***** """ Joseph, The VP begins by working with Alex the sitting president to help him enact his agenda – he is the President. The Exec is also somewhat constrained, like any elective body, by those in it. That is, what members want to work on. Ideally… First, what I would like to see done is to set out an agenda/policy map for the first year. A clear set of goals with time-lines that consists of the presidents, the exec members, and my own plans/desires. Second, complete the ongoing comprehensive review of bylaws and make any required changes and put changes that must be voted on before the membership. This will really help. Third, I would work with Micheal the treasurer to create a plan to expand membership and secure sponsors. We have had some discussions on this and I think firming up the plan and then implementing it is possible in the near term. Related to this is the ongoing discussion on perhaps hiring someone for outreach and similar tasks. Please keep in mind that while we are all online and interactive that deliberation across timer zones is slow. Not as slow as institutional time but definitely not internet time! Also, there needs to be Exec member buy in for any changes. -TED """ ***** LORI KENDALL (VP candidate) ***** """ Joseph K.: The first thing I intend to do is to implement a formal process for transferring knowledge from one IR conference Program Chair to the next. This will involve both collecting information from this year’s Program Chair (convenient, since this is me! :) and setting up a system to continue passing on this information from year to year. My aim is two-fold. First, I would like to make it easier for new Program Chairs to get up to speed. For those who have never served in such a capacity, there is a lot to learn, both technically and procedurally. The second purpose is to improve the conference planning process and especially to improve the reviewing process. """ ***** MONICA MURERO (VP candidate) ***** """ Honorific Aoir Lifetime Member for outstanding services to the Aoir community, Prof Murero will greatly benefit Aoir on every task: administrative, financial , executive, publishing, budget and conference related matters. In fact, during the first 90 days of service (Oct-Jan.) Aoir must complete several concrete tasks. Examples include: Finalization of Conference financial matters, management of memberships, and legal duties. A highly-experienced and knowledgable candidate is crucial to make imoortant tasks concretely run from day one. Also, budgeting for the new conference, CFP , conference theme and administrative duties need to be addressed. Furthermore, the previous exec might leave “hot” unresolved tasks in the hands of the new officers that need attention, Under safe hands, important tasks can be addressed from day one. Decisions influence Aoir mid-term activities. Aoir values must be protected and tasks developed under experienced hands. With well-recognized contributes to the Aoir executive committee and a curriculum of excellence, Prof. Murero is the most experienced candidate for the VP position. Mantain the sense of community people find at the Aoir conference and air-list, and work together for the health of the association is a must. Every 2 months, the exec Report will inform members about current activities by offering new opportunities to the Aoir community. An informal, welcoming and high-quality attitude in discussing crucial topics will keep Aoir the fantastic open place for interdisciplinary discussion and collaborations we have created over the years. """ ***** ANTHONY HOFFMANN (Student Rep candidate) ****** """ Joseph – thanks for the question. As articulated in the above statement, I would like to pursue my mentorship proposal. One of the strengths of the Association is that there are very few distinctions drawn between established faculty and up-and-coming students – I believe that keeping such distinctions at a minimum (by avoiding, say, the development of separate spaces for faculty versus students) is important for maintaining AoIR’s inclusivity. A mentorship program, while it creates a distinction in terms of how and who may apply (and what role they may serve, be it mentor or mentored), ultimately serves to bring together both established and up-and-coming scholars and researchers, which I see as being in the spirit of inclusivity. Plus, it has the potential to add value and further diversity the programming of the annual conference – creating a new space for dialogue and the exchange of ideas. More to the point of the question, then: in my first 90 days in office I will aim to gather feedback as to what members of the Association, should they support such a program, would want a mentorship program to look like. From there, I will synthesize input and put forward a proposal as to how such a program might work. """ ***** KELLY QUINN (Student Rep candidate) ***** """ Hi Joseph – Thanks for the opportunity to respond. I have two specific ideas that can be quickly implemented by the AoIR Executive Committee. The first is to more effectively utilize the AoIR graduate student listserv. Currently, we have fewer than 200 subscribers on the graduate student listserv, and little activity takes place therein. I would like to see a campaign during and after the annual conference to encourage grad students to subscribe to the list, and then use it to publicize grad student conferences and cfps specifically targeting graduate students (awards, journals, fellowships), to announce talks and seminars, and to suggest grad student resources (monetary and otherwise) that might be useful to our student members. Second, to engage the entire membership a little more actively, I would encourage the Executive Committee to work toward establishing a regularly scheduled AoIR Twitter meetup, or short tweeting discussion sessions (30 minutes to an hour) that would target specific topics that are pertinent to internet researchers. Topics might include internet research ethics on specific technologies (social network sites, blogs), the use of specific research methods, strategies for recruitment, and so on. The key is holding these conversations at regularly scheduled times and announcing the topic in advance, so that any interested members could join the discussion. Because our membership is comprised of internet researchers, I believe that AoIR can and should take a leadership role in utilizing various new media formats to engage and connect its membership. """ ***** ANDREA BAKER (Open Seat candidate) ***** """ Joseph, hi, thanks for your question. I would ask that the exec committee discuss adding places and times for informal roundtable discussions to the program. If agreed, I would then help implement steps to insure that the call for papers for IR 13.0 included solicitation of discussion leaders and their topics. """ ***** SORAJ HONGLADAROM (Open Seat candidate) ***** """ Hi Joseph, my first concrete tasks would be to initiate an agenda for the committee on how to broaden the scope of the association. This can be done in several ways, but one I am having in mind is to promote the activities of the association in non-western countries, especially in Asia. For example, the association could join hands with other local groups to hold seminars on topics of our interest in the region. Soraj """ ***** MARK JOHNS (Open Seat candidate) ***** """ In the first 90 days? NONE! I would spend the first 90 days learning about the dynamics of the Executive and understanding the issues most important to the other members. Only by listening to one another and building trust in this new setting would anything be accomplished in the future. While I have met all of the Exec members, and know some quite well, every group has its own chemistry and I would spend the first 90 days trying to to see how the chemistry of this group works. """ ***** ULF-DIETRICH REIPS (Open Seat candidate) ***** """ Hi Joseph, thanks for your comment. I would begin by listening to the new president and other incoming officers (some with much more experience than me in AoIR office matters) as to what are the most important and pressing issues, and help with those as much as I can. If adequate, I would then attend to Nr. 3 above and publish a call to submit links, materials, and descriptions to a repository with useful software for Internet researchers. Furthermore, I’d write up and post information about other societies that may be of interest to AoIR members and collect comments from AoIR members about their experiences with and interests in those societies (plus pointers to more societies to add to the list). I hope in this process some ideas for joint projects will emerge, so we can contact officers from the other societies to follow up on those ideas. Also, at some point we may be able to draw a landscape of organizations with overlapping interest that may serve as a visual guide for PhD students. """ ***** CRISTIAN BERRIO ZAPATA (Open Seat candidate) ***** """ I believe two main courses must be taken: (1) begin contacts to open AOIR conference activities to other continents and cities. One of my colleagues proposed Asia. That could be. What about Brazil? Maybe Buenos Aires, Argentina? We must congregate people from various latitudes in different places. (2) Language might be a barrier in this moment. Although it is clear that English keeps being the general language of the association, we must open to other languages and built information structures to do so. (3) Both (1) and (2) required that we plan a compatible manware – repository structure. What about using AOIR as a base for exchange of professors from distant latitudes? In general, I believe the first goal is to develop AOIR globally to the side of the developing countries, as the association can bring a lot to them, opening opportunities to people in the developed countries. Exchange of knowledge and information in seek of better life for everyone.
