CfP CSCW 2012: Workshop proposals (July 8); Papers & Notes abstracts (May 27), submissions (June 3)
by Joe McCarthy 26 May '11

26 May '11

The ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work <http://cscw2012.org> is a premier venue for presenting research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, and communities. CSCW encompasses both the technical and social challenges encountered when supporting collaboration. The development and application of new technologies continues to enable new ways of working together and coordinating activities. Although work is an area of focus, CSCW embraces research and technologies supporting a wide range of recreational and social activities using a diverse range of devices. The conference brings together top researchers and practitioners from academia and industry who are interested in both technical and social aspects of collaboration. CSCW 2012 will be held February 11-15, 2012, in Seattle, Washington, USA. CSCW Workshops <http://cscw2012.org/participation/workshops.php> provide an opportunity to discuss and explore emerging areas of CSCW research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. Workshops may focus on any aspect of CSCW theory or practice, established concerns or new ideas. However, radical new ideas expected to draw a sufficient number of participants are very much encouraged! The goal of a workshop is to share understandings and experiences, to foster research communities, to learn from each other and to envision future directions. For examples of workshop topics from the last two conferences, please review the CSCW 2010 <http://www.cscw2010.org/program/workshops.php> and CSCW 2011 <http://cscw2011.org/program/workshops.html> Workshop Programs. Hello Please excuse this bit of self-promotion but I just wanted to flag a new book I've co-authored that has recently been published by MIT Press. I thought it might be of relevance to some of the people on this list. This pdf gives some more detail on Code/Space, including the table of contents and the opening chapter, http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/staff/m.dodge/CodeSpace_Kitchin_Dodge… Details are also given on the MIT Press webpage, http://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262042482 And of course it can be ordered from bookshops, including Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Code-Space-Software-Everyday-Studies/dp/0262042487/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/Code-Space-Software-Everyday-Studies/dp/0262042487/ Many thanks cheers Martin --- Martin Dodge Department of Geography The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, United Kingdom. Thoughts on "New Media Culture" class?
by Joseph Reagle 25 May '11

25 May '11

Next semester I will be teaching an undergraduate course on "New Media Culture." While not necessary -- I can design the course as I wish -- I intend to be rather literal: focusing on the cultures of new media communities. This prompts three questions on which I welcome thoughts. 1. I still feel obliged to introduce new media in a historical and theoretical frame. ("New media" has been a topic of study longer than most students have lived.) That is, a concise introduction to the key periods, concepts, and figures. For example, in terms of periods, one can see the issue of hyper-textuality and narrative in the early 90s, questions of community and identity in the mid-90s, and more recently we have "social media." (Perhaps a small reference work (dictionary/encyclopedia) would be handy.) 2. What is an appropriate lens for exploring and comparing new media cultures? For example, values, identity (including anonymity), power, gender/race, boundaries, pro-sociology, language/jargon, and relation to other cultures (including the mainstream). In a related course, we encountered all these issues, but I was thinking it would be nice to have something up front. 3. What are some good cases and readings on new media cultures -- again focussing on the cultural aspects? (For example, the Well (historic), Anonymous, Facebook, Wikipedia, etc.).

The Internet is the place where we meet, speak, create, educate ourselves and organize. However, as we are at a turning point in early web history, it could either become a prime tool for improving our societies, knowledge and culture, or a totalitarian tool of suveillance and control. After 15 years of fighting the sharing of culture in the name of an obsolete copyright regime, governments of the World are uniting to control and censor the Internet. The black-out of the Egyptian Net, the US government's reaction to Wikileaks, the adoption of website blocking mechanisms in Europe, or the plans for "Internet kill switches"[1] are all major threats on our freedom of expression and communication. These threats come from corporations and politicians, unsettled by the advent of the Internet. As a host of the G8, France's president Nicolas Sarkozy wants to step up centralized control over the Internet. He has convened world leaders to a summit aimed at working towards a "civilized Internet", a concept he borrowed from the Chinese government. By creating fears such as "cyber-terrorism", their objective is to generalize rules of exception in order to establish censorship and control, thereby undermining free speech and other civil liberties. They will package this policy using words like "democracy" and "responsibility", but look at their acts. Sarkozy has already enabled disconnection of citizens from the Internet and the censorship of online content in France. The Internet allows us to express our opinions universally. The Internet unites us and makes us strong. It is a space in which the common civilisation of our diverse planet meets. Our imaginations, through all kinds of media we create and publish, help us protect our rights and a free Internet. As world leaders gather at the end of this month, we must all come together and use our creativity to reject any attempt at turning the Internet into a tool of repression and control. # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mx.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime(a)kein.org !DSPAM:2676,4dd7a4cd40309950465804!
