Hi Denise - Charles Tilly's 1997/Micro/, /Macro, or Megrim/? may be a prior layered theory. It's published in 2002's /Stories, Identities, and Political Change /by Rowman and Littlefield. If I've jumped in without knowing the whole conversation (new to the list, waving hi!) I apologize. Won't be the first time that's happened :) Denice Szafran On 5/30/2011 6:00 PM, air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org wrote: > I wanted to share a rare event: answering my own question! media and social change networks?
by Annette Markham 30 May '11

30 May '11

Hi All, I'm trying to get a sense of what research collectives/networks focus specifically on media and social change. If you know of any, could you post to this list? I realize this is a huge category, but I'm trying to get a sense of how this general topic is being approached, either within-discipline, across disciplines, or outside academia. My query is deliberately vague to try to generate the breadth of this topic area. (I also ask because I just returned from a workshop focused on creating a research network on media and social change within media anthropology and I'd like to ascertain how closely this network would align with other efforts) Thanks for anything you provide. I'd be happy to share a collection of anything that emerges from this inquiry. annette ***************************************************** Annette N. Over one-half of connected households used more than one type of device to go online. About 81% of households located in census metropolitan areas and 76% of households located in census agglomerations had home Internet access, compared with 71% of households outside of these areas. Rates of access were highest in British Columbia (84%) and Alberta (83%), followed by Ontario, where the rate was 81%. The Canadian Internet Use Survey was redesigned for 2010 and its findings should not be compared with those from previous surveys. REMIX, a new list for researchers studying remix practices and cultures
by Daniel Villar Onrubia 29 May '11

29 May '11

Dear all, Last March we organised a multidisciplinary workshop on "Remix Cinema" at the University of Oxford (www.remixcinema.org) One of the main conclusions we reached after this event is that scholars interested in remix might benefit substantially from a specialised forum in which they can communicate with peers studying such practices. For that purpose, we have created a new mailing list (powered by JISCmail) called "Remix practices and cultures." Although the Remix Cinema workshop was particularly focused on the role of audiovisual remix practices in the context of digital culture, this list is aimed at a wider group of researchers, examining remix practices of any kinds from a social, cultural, historical, aesthetic, political, economic, legal, technical, or interdisciplinary point of view. https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?SUBED1=REMIX&A=1 We are looking very much forward to initiating the conversation! Best wishes, Daniel Villar Onrubia Doctoral Student at Oxford Internet Institute. University of Oxford daniel.villaronrubia(a)oii.ox.ac.uk | http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk

The ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work is a premier venue for presenting research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, and communities. CSCW encompasses both the technical and social challenges encountered when supporting collaboration. The development and application of new technologies continues to enable new ways of working together and coordinating activities. Although work is an area of focus, CSCW embraces research and technologies supporting a wide range of recreational and social activities using a diverse range of devices. The conference brings together top researchers and practitioners from academia and industry who are interested in both technical and social aspects of collaboration. CSCW 2012 will be held February 11-15, 2012, in Seattle, Washington, USA. CSCW Workshops (http://cscw2012.org/participation/workshops.php) provide an opportunity to discuss and explore emerging areas of CSCW research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. Workshops may focus on any aspect of CSCW theory or practice, established concerns or new ideas. However, radical new ideas expected to draw a sufficient number of participants are very much encouraged! The goal of a workshop is to share understandings and experiences, to foster research communities, to learn from each other and to envision future directions. For examples of workshop topics from the last two conferences, please review the CSCW 2010 and CSCW 2011 Workshop Programs. The deadline for Workshop proposals is July 8. As previously announced, the deadline for Papers (10 pages) & Notes (4 pages) submissions is June 3; please note that titles and abstracts of Papers & Notes are requested by May 27 (this Friday), and that a link to the submission site is available on the Papers & Notes page (http://cscw2012.org/participation/papersnotes.php) The complete Call for Participation, including information about Papers & Notes, Workshops, CSCW Horizon, Demonstrations, Panels, Posters, Videos, the Doctoral Colloquium, and Student Volunteers - as well as Papers and Notes - can be found at http://cscw2012.org.
