Telecoms/Internet Shut Down in Nigeria
by Wale Oni 02 Jun '11

02 Jun '11

Dear All, This is important in the annals of events leading to governments shutting down communication technologies (mainly mobile phones and the Internet) for "security" reason: On May 29, 2011, Nigeria FG secretly ordered shut down of Telecoms and the Internet in the capital city of Abuja for hours (still being determined) before and after the Inauguartion ceremony of the president-elect. There are mixed reactions to the right of government to embark on this action, given the people's right to freedom of speech, expression and of the press. An ongoing survey hopes to analyse (across print and new media, e.g. Facebook) attitude of the citizenry towards such un-annouced breech in the freedom of expression and right to communicate. This becomes intriguing when the President day after the incident assented the much-awaited Freedom of Information Bill. If you have witnessed such act by your governments or any studies on this kind of government distrupting public communnication especially the new media, kindly assist by providing links and information that will be of help. *'Wale Oni* *Communication Studies Dept.,* *College of Humanities & Culture, Osun State University* *IKIRE CAMPUS,* *221104 Nigeria* +234 8160831501, +234 8056673899 color=#0000ff>* Alt. Oh, dear. I'll stop sending it now :0) The first time I sent the unnatural ecologies email, the message contained too much HTML. The email was sent back to me so I could adjust it. I didn't know the first one had then gone through! My sincere apologies!

For list: Unnatural Ecologies special issue Fibreculture Journal
by Phoebe Moore 02 Jun '11

02 Jun '11

To whom it may concern. Would it be possible please to post the following to the Air-l list. Many thanks, Phoebe -- Just after Easter, a special issue of Fibreculture journal went live, edited by Dr Michael Goddard and Dr Jussi Parikka and featuring articles by leading researchers in the emergent field of media ecologies Olga Goriunova, Matteo Pasquinelli, Matthew Fuller, and Phoebe Moore. http://fibreculturejournal.org/ The Unnatural Ecologies issue is a contribution to a cutting edge field of contemproary media research namely media ecologies. In the words of the fibreculture managing editor Dr Andrew Murphie: "the leading scholars writing for the Unnatural Ecologies issue do not perfrom media ecology as we have known it .... they are rewriting media ecology, exploring its limits from inside and outside. In the process the Fibreculture Journal believes this issue makes a crucial contribution to thinking about all media from the perspective of digital and networked media. In thinking through the unnatural ecologies that contemorary media make increasingly obvious, the issue challenges us to rethink not only what media are, or what they do, but what they might have been and what they have done." Coinciding with this issue, Fibreculture has introduced a new interface permitting the one click downloading of the issue as an ePub or pdf document. We hope you will enjoy this special issue and feel free to recirculate (and apologies in advance for cross-posting). EJIS CFP - Special Issue on Mobile IS and Mobility
by Catherine Middleton 02 Jun '11

02 Jun '11

Call for Papers: European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS) http://www.palgrave-journals.com/ejis/index.html PDF version of this CFP: http://www.palgrave-journals.com/ejis/EJIS_CFP_MISM.pdf Special Issue on Mobile Information Systems and Mobility In 2006, an EJIS special issue on mobile user behaviour published seven papers that explored the ways in which “increased mobility of the users violates some of the assumptions traditionally associated with the use of IS” (van der Heijden & Junglas, 2006, p. 249). In the five years since that special issue was published, mobile devices have become much more powerful, and users have become more demanding of mobile access to information systems. Many individuals now carry powerful computing devices with them at all times, blurring the boundaries between personal and organizational systems and uses. Individuals are becoming “experiential” computing users, with personal computing devices embedded in their everyday activities. The increased power and prevalence of mobile devices presents an opportunity, if not an obligation, for information systems researchers to revisit fundamental assumptions embedded in our theories. What changes when we assume that mobile access is a key component of information systems and that mobility is a key expectation of users? Should IS theories that were developed to investigate the deployment of fixed systems in bounded environments controlled by organizations be revisited in the context of mobility? We invite theoretical and empirical papers that explore the meanings and implications of mobility for information systems research and researchers. We encourage broad definitions of mobility and information systems, in recognition that mobility can dissolve organizational boundaries, reshape information systems, and change the nature of use and users. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: • Design of mobile information systems environments • Management challenges in a mobile information systems environment • Mobile content and services development, the rise of the mobile ‘app’ and cloud computing • Perspectives on the “always on, always connected” mobile society, the mobile device as instrument of societal change • Understanding the mobile content consumer, opportunities and threats for content providers • Theorising the mobile ICT artefact • New affordances of mobility • Understanding the materiality of mobility, exploring the mobile artifact • New actors in a mobile information systems environment, including machine to machine interaction • Mobility in the workforce, including overlapping contexts of mobile technology use (work, leisure, social), the business value of mobility, and mobility considerations in ICT strategy • The role of digital infrastructures in enabling mobility Guest Editors for the Special Issue Catherine Middleton, Ryerson University (catherine.middleton(a)ryerson.ca) Rens Scheepers, Deakin University (rens.scheepers(a)deakin.edu.au) Virpi Kristiina Tuunainen, Aalto University (virpi.tuunainen(a)aalto.fi) Submission Guidelines and Important Dates Papers may be submitted to the special issue any time before December 31, 2011. Follow the EJIS formatting guidelines at http://ejis.msubmit.net/cgibin/main.plex?form_type=display_auth_instructions Submit using the EJIS online paper submission system at http://ejis.msubmit.net/cgibin/main.plex and select the Mobile Information Systems and Mobilty (MISM) Special Issue during submission Note that papers should not exceed 8000 words. The guest editors will screen all submissions, before sending papers out for review.

mailing list analysis

In particular, now I am observing how the hundreds of local committees of this campaign communicate on Facebook, simply reading and noting what happens in their posts and events. Nevertheless, i think that the analysis could become easier with the help of some tools or applications. So, could you suggest me some application / tools / literature to observe the communication of disperse phenomena on Facebook? In particular, do you know if exists: a) a tool to summarize basic information about a group (number of daily posts, number of likes and comments, and similar)? b) a tool to detect where and how a certain symbol or link spreads on Facebook? c) a tool that indicates what is becoming trendy or "viral" on Facebook? Or, better, a web page dedicated to research software for facebook analysis in social science? mobiles and affect
by Natalie Dixon 02 Jun '11

02 Jun '11

Dear Colleagues I am currently researching affect and mobiles at the University of Amsterdam. For my new media masters thesis I would like to test the notion of *subjectivity (*how users become subjects to their phones, themselves and others) and how this links to affect. To test this further I have designed a survey. My experience with surveys is limited and I was hoping I could ask for some feedback on the survey design and/or positioning. Perhaps there are similar mobile surveys out there? Or other researchers working with the same themes that I can touch base with? Any pointers are welcome. The survey link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P5PS27G Thanks in advance Regards Natalie -- Natalie Dixon MA Student University of Amsterdam m: +31 655 881 413 w: www.nataliedixon.info
