The deadline for our workshop at HCI 2011 has been extended to 13th of May, 2011 iPEx Workshop on Online Patient Experience and its Role in E-health Northumbria University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK - 5th July 2011 - at the 25th Human Computer Interaction conference (HCI2011) Organisers Sue Ziebland Department of Primary Health Care, University of Oxford Pamela Briggs School of Life Sciences, Northumbria University John Powell Health Sciences Research Institute, University of Warwick Call for papers Overview of the Workshop The Internet has an important role in the provision of reliable, relevant and timely health information for the public and patients. Traditionally, authoritative health information has been based on facts and figures, not the experiences of patients. However the rise of patient-generated content on the Internet, in the form of online patient experiences (PEx) has changed the landscape of health decision-making. Online PEx can have both positive and negative influences - PEx can enhance social support, and facilitate adjustment to an illness but can also raise anxiety levels and in an unmoderated format can deliver very powerful but misleading messages. PEx is important for researchers and e-health designers alike and in this workshop we seek to bring the new PEx community together to share new approaches and findings. The natural response to this for most people is that it is never ethically permissible to do so. While I recognize that (for example) this would expose you to personal sanctions from the company for violating those terms, and potentially expose your institution, I'm less concerned with the legal implications than I am with ethical restrictions this places on the researcher. I think there are cases where violation of a set of Terms is ethically permissible, a position I took up at an AoIR preconference workshop last year. This gives us a concrete example. It seems to me that the tweets themselves are not owned by Twitter, and so they are restricting your ability to access these materials programmatically, not to actually having or redistributing the content. If you "magically" were in possession of a collection of tweets, they would have little say in their redistribution (though the authors might, an issue that I think is separate). Specifically, Twitter prohibits "scraping" the service, but fails to define this. If I hire a war room to cut and paste tweets, does this violate the policy? It's simply not clear. It seems to me there is a kind of Turing-test for scrapers: Twitter would have no way to know (other than asking) whether I was scraping programmatically or had hired a room full of undergrads to cut and paste. I've gotten away from my original question. There's no question that the courts have thus far sided with ToS as generally being binding. But when is it (or is it ever) ethically either acceptable or necessary to violate a web site's Terms? Stu- I'm not in full agreement with your starting point that tweets "yearn to be free". Twitter closed down our efforts to share post-Osama bin Laden Twitter data (or any other collections) for research purposes, again citing their TOS & API TOS. http://bit.ly/l8DSA3 To be clear: we were giving the data away, not selling it. Also, it was not scraped of Twitter. Rather, it was gathered using a Twitter-authorized account and an API that lets us fetch 1500 items at a time. It is a shame that the now 2 million tweets cannot, for example, be sampled and coded using a crowd source model. Or could they? These papers, from doctoral, postdoctoral and academic researchers, will be presented at the Royal Irish Academy’s Annual Conference on International Affairs, to be held in Academy House, Dublin, on 18 November 2011. The International Affairs Conference, organised by the Academy’s Committee for International Affairs, is the premier conference on international studies in Ireland, attracting an audience of students, academics, Irish and foreign diplomats and members of the public. The Minister for Foreign Affairs gives the opening address on an annual basis. This speech has often provided the occasion for the delivery of an important policy statement on Irish foreign relations. Traditionally, papers presented at this conference are considered for inclusion in the journal Irish Studies in International Affairs, which is published annually by the Academy. >From what I understand talking with Devin and others on our team at the Web Ecology Project, having dealt with 140kit a few months ago, Twitter didn't want any data made available regardless of it being free or anyone getting paid. I think the stipulation was that you can download and pass around your own tweets, but not others'. You can also do analytics on any data that you gather and release that, but not the actual tweets. But I'm sure Devin can explain all this in more detail. New issue of Cultural Science journal published: Internet Research Methods as Moments of Revolution

Dear Colleages, Guest-edited by two emerging scholars, and featuring work from several continents, a special issue of the *Cultural Science Journal* is (Vol 3.2) now published, presenting important experimental explorations in a nascent, fast-changing and potentially vast field of study. The issue showcases work by Early Career Researchers (ECRs) as well as established figures, and includes work from The Netherlands, Australia, Taiwan, Bulgaria and the USA. It was co-edited by doctoral students Thomas Petzold and Henry Siling Li – while both were in the throes of final write-up and submission of their own PhD theses. The idea for the issue was born out of discussions at the CCI Symposium of mid-2010. In a context where large-scale data generation and collection is occurring across a wide range of individuals and organisations, the core questions raised by that discussion were: · How to address the need for new ways of researching and theorising human interactions in the era of the internet? · What tools are available to us? · What challenges we are facing? The overarching idea is that not only cultural phenomena but also the tools to understand them can be treated as points of evolution in a longer evolutionary process. With that in mind, the issue has included papers that combine innovative research design with a large-context treatment of socio-cultural phenomena. The issue opens with two papers by senior researchers *Mark Deuze *and *Alan McKee* (co-authored with PhD student *Ben Hamley *and* Christy Collis*) on the need for an evolutionary and interdisciplinary approach to media culture in an era of ‘the survival of the mediated.’ These are followed by 5 papers by ECRs – *Denise N. Rall, Hui-Jung Chang, Nikoleta Daskalova, Jason Tocci, and Han-Teng Liao & Thomas Petzold*. They address issues of *data and reality, geo-linguistic analysis, cross-cultural comparison, reflective use of social media and the change and evolution of internet scholarship itself*. The papers cover a good variety of internet scholarship, from quantitative to qualitative analysis, from critical to empirical approaches. Hi: I'd appreciate any advice from AoIR members. Are there any programs that allow for participants to easily give an electronic signature for consent forms online? If not, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to go about getting participants to submit a completed online consent form with a signature included? Many thanks for your help.
