Videoconferencing in Practice: 2nd Call For Papers and extended deadline
by Dr. Sean Rintel 02 Jun '11

02 Jun '11

2nd CALL FOR PAPERS and EXTENDED DEADLINE: July 31, 2011 Electronic Journal of Communication / La Revue Electronique de Communication Special Issue: Videoconferencing in Practice: 21st Century Challenges Editor: Sean Rintel (s.rintel@uq edu.au) While not yet ubiquitous, videoconferencing can certainly be said to have come of age at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The capabilities of videoconferencing systems have improved while barriers have been significantly lowered to the point where videoconferencing is no longer extraordinary, albeit still quite novel. This special issue of the Electronic Journal of Communication invites contributions exploring how videoconferencing has become a practical method of interaction in personal, professional, pedagogical, and institutional contexts. Contributors should have a central concern with whether and how users attend to the affordances and constraints of videoconferencing as relevant to the business at hand. The issue will seek to cover a broad range of subjects to provide a snapshot of 21st century videoconferencing research from a Communication perspective. As such, all authors are asked to include in their literature review and conclusions some sense of how their study deals with questions of Communication research in general, and Communication-focused videoconferencing research in particular. Manuscripts are invited that cover one of the following areas, or authors may propose their own area that demonstrably adds to the goal of the special issue: * Case studies of practical videoconferencing in context. * Survey studies of practical videoconferencing in context. * Experimental studies that show practical behaviours that may be specific to contexts or cut across contexts. * Literature reviews that focus on changes or critiques of videoconferencing findings and/or theories. * Representations of videoconferencing in the mass media or other venues of the public imagination. * Methodological studies about research practices or methods for capturing/analysing videoconferencing in context. * Trouble using videoconferencing in context (e.g. constraints of the medium, communication trouble, operational problems such as network trouble, work-arounds). * Adoption/take-up studies of practical videoconferencing in context. Authors are welcome to contact the editor to discuss ideas for manuscripts. Given the topic and the electronic nature of the journal, authors are also encouraged to supply video and/or audio clip examples or supplemental materials. Submission detail are as follows: * NEW Deadline for completed manuscripts is July 31, 2011. The issue is scheduled for publication in the first half of 2012. * Maximum 7500 words (limit includes references but excludes transcribed examples, tables, figures etc.). * Manuscript and citation format: APA 6th Edition style. * Submission: Email manuscript files to Sean Rintel at s.rintel(a)uq.edu.au. * File format: Word 97 (.doc), Word 2008 (.docx), or PDF. Authors using carefully formatted transcripts (e.g. those of Conversation Analysis) should also provide screenshot images of all excerpts labeled with the appropriate example number. Video and audio clips should be provided in Quicktime .mov format with appropriate indication in the manuscript as to where the clip should appear. Do not embed video or audio in Word or PDF files. Research refs about anger and bullying in digital space?
by Susan Greenberg 02 Jun '11

02 Jun '11

Apologies if my query has already been extensively discussed, but I am relatively new to this list. I am interested to know whether anyone can suggest any literature that measures or evaluates negative emotion – especially anger – in the digital space, and/or bullying behaviour. Also, whether there has been an examination of the circumstances in which one might legitimately not be able to provide links (to examples of something online). Finally, what is the most important literature on the "pinprick effect". Many thanks in advance for any help! Regards, Susan Greenberg (Senior lecturer in Creative Writing at Roehampton University and research student at UCL DIS)

Call for papers - Green e-participation
by Stephen Coleman 01 Jun '11

01 Jun '11

Call for Papers International Journal of Electronic Governance (IJEG) Special Issue on “Green e-Participation” guest-edited by Prof. Stephen Coleman Institute of Communications Studies (ICS), University of Leeds Prof. Andreas Papandreou Department of Economics, University of Athens This special issue aims to focus on attempts to apply theories and practices of e-participation to environmental policy-making and green development. This raises important methodological and theoretical challenges that we hope to explore through a collection of interdisciplinary papers. While e-government refers to technologies that facilitate information and service delivery to citizens, e-participation refers to processes and technologies that enable communication among citizens and enhance their capacity to influence collective decision making, or to be engaged in collective action. Citizens can engage in e-deliberations, they can voice their public opinions, collect signatures via e-petitions and try to influence the outcome of decisions and rule-making at all levels of governance. E-voting, digital protests and e-petitions may support or oppose political decisions. The use of blogs and new social media provide new opportunities to reform the ways that citizens communicate with governments. Networked communities can go beyond deliberation, voice and involvement in decision-making by actively participating in facets of governance like community support, fund raising, pledging, monitoring the implementation of policies or changing their own behaviour in ways that tangibly link individual acts with collective outcomes. Recently, there has even been discussion of tapping into the structure of gaming communities to help resolve social problems. For example, in the World Without Oil game 1800 people from 12 countries were asked to re-imagine their lives in a world bereft of oil as an exercise in changing attitudes. Environmental issues and policies, in particular, constitute a typical area where social media are used in some of the ways outlined above. Citizens’ right to access environmental information has been strengthened through online disclosure. Green e-participation has improved the legitimacy of decision-making processes that have an impact on the environment. Pollution-monitoring sites have provided tools to inform citizens as well as help them take steps towards effective political action. A number of features make green e-participation particularly interesting and important: the often strong public motivation in environmental matters; the fact that many environmental issues draw support across traditional political borders; the complex nature of environmental problems and solutions; the fact that environmental issues cover all levels of governance from local to global; the cross-jurisdictional and cross-departmental nature of most environmental issues; and the fact that environmental issues do not align well with traditional governance bodies. The fluidity of informationally-rich forms of networked communities can potentially adapt more effectively and speedily to environmental challenges, whether these involve issues of local waste management; monitoring and reduction of pollutants; household energy conservation; or regional plans to combat climate change. An assumption to be tested in this special issue is that deliberative network technologies can more readily engage the relevant stakeholders with the specific problem at hand. The establishment of green networks of citizens, activists, researchers, business leaders and government decision makers is likely to have a profound impact on the nature of democracy and the forms of environmental governance. Numerous issues arise: · What is special about the interface between e-participation and environmental governance? · Can citizens monitor their representatives’ actions towards sustainable green development? Can e-participation tools make democracy more accountable and, at the same time, more effective ? · Does e-rulemaking, in particular, have the potential to level the playing field by opening up new avenues for the involvement of public interest groups for environmental issues? · What are the barriers and opportunities to greater online citizen engagement in environmental policy-making and green e-participation? Can all citizens be equally represented via new digital media and online platforms? Can these tools also be used by NGOs, lobbyists and industries to influence the decision process? Subject Coverage The special issue invites research papers, case studies, experience and best practice reports on the following non-exhaustive list of topics : · online participation tools and deliberative processes, including e-petitions, e-campaigns, e-consultations and others, for environmental policies and green development · online strategies tools by NGOs, local administrations and governments for environmental policies and green participation · social media, Web 2.0 and emerging technologies and applications for green e-participation · theoretical approaches to global governance and inclusive policy-making via virtual spaces · success and failure stories, good and bad practices for green e-participation, addressing the barriers and opportunities for online citizen mobilization on environmental issues. Notes for Intending Authors Submitted papers should not have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All papers are refereed through a double blind process. A guide for authors, sample copies and other relevant information for submitting papers are available on the IJEG Submission of Papers<http://www.inderscience.com/papers> web-page. Last Call: IR 12.0 (Seattle) Fee Waiver Application--DUE TODAY
by Alex Halavais 01 Jun '11

01 Jun '11

Will consider any applications received by midnight today (Baker Island time :). - Alex Fee Waiver Program In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers will make available up to three conference fee waivers per year. The number of fee waivers will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the Vice-President of AoIR (Alex Halavais, vp(a)aoir.org) and must be received by June 1, 2010. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations of fee waiver applications will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless we hope that awarded fee waivers will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the AoIR IR conferences in important new ways. Milestones towards Open Government Data
by Johann Hoechtl 01 Jun '11

01 Jun '11

Dear colleagues, In preparation for a conference poster (http://www.ogd2011.at/, probably for DEXA/EGOVIS) I am seeking input of important milestones for Open Government Data, primarily in the european context. I identified 1. DIRECTIVE 2003/98/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 17 November 2003 on the re-use of public sector information 2. The Ministerial Declaration on eGovernment approved unanimously in Malmö, Sweden, on 18 November 2009 includes several declarations of intent regarding increased transparency and openness in the administration process 3. Granada Ministerial Declaration on the European Digital Agenda: Agreed on 19 April 2010 (ministers responsible for the Information Society Policy of the European Union Member States) 4. Digital Agenda for Europe 5. The E-Government Action Plan 6. Neelie Kroes Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda & eHealth1:“I have said it before, and I say it again: yes to open data! I want to see more citizens and businesses making use of more open – machine readable – data. By involving third parties we can both improve services and be more transparent. That would be the definition of weGov.” The poster of Tim Davies from OII @ http://journal.webscience.org/414/1/WebSciencePoster.pdf is another indespensable ressource. Others? BR, Johann -- -- Mag. While I can't say I have checked the veracity of the story, and have only seen reprints, not the original, Ms. Magazine ran a story in October 1985 titled "The Strange Case of the Electronic Lover" by Lindsey Van Gelder. In it she details her experiences as the victim of a man pretending to be a woman named Joan on CompuServe in the early 80s who used his connection with women to lure them into physical world sexual encounters. She states "Joan was sexually aggressive. Every woman I interviewed reported - and was troubled by - Joan's pressuring to have 'cybersex'. This is on-line sex, similar to phone sex, in which people type out their hottest fantasies while they masturbate. (In the age of herpes and AIDS, it has become increasingly popular.)" Van Gelder claims to have met Joan in 1983, but we don't know if "Joan" was active in Cybersex at the time already or if "she" didn't become "aggressive" until '84 or '85. -J. Hinton

List Submission: Cybersex?
by Hilary W 31 May '11

31 May '11

Greetings, I was wondering if the list's collective mind could help me with a question: when was cybersex (here defined as two or more individuals engaging in typed descriptions of physical sex acts, emotions etc) first discussed popularly and by whom? The academic history of cybersex extends far back to the Internet's beginnings - lists/MUDs/BBS - and was far more popular back in the 90's than now (when seemingly questions of addiction etc take over apart from Attwood's recent revisit). It all seems to blur together and so far I have Rhinegold (1991) and Turkle (1995) as the earliest and most popularly mentioned discussions. Any thoughts, comments, epiphanies would be greatly appreciated :) -- Hilary Wheaton PhD Candidate Curtin University -http://proceedbydebate.blogspot.com/ -http://hilarywheaton.blogspot.com/

You might want to have a look at the EASA Media Anthropology Network list - they don't focus specifically on media and social change, but it certainly comes up a lot. http://www.media-anthropology.net/ Cheers, Julian ++++++++++ Blog: www.julianhopkins.net Twitter: @julianhopkins Skype: julhop ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Mon, 30 May 2011 11:40:08 +0200 From: Annette Markham <amarkham(a)gmail.com> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] media and social change networks? If you know of any, could you post to this list? I realize this is a huge category, but I'm trying to get a sense of how this general topic is being approached, either within-discipline, across disciplines, or outside academia. My query is deliberately vague to try to generate the breadth of this topic area.
