(2024) Inequality in the Digital Economy. The Case for a Universal Basic Income. The structural logic of the digital economy as presently constituted widens inequality and, through its use of automation for increasingly complex, as well as mundane, tasks, threatens jobs. The book will investigate the extent of this disruption to traditional labour markets and of individual livelihoods, and argue that alternative means of supporting people financially, like UBI, can mitigate the digital economy’s most baleful impacts. The book will also highlight the positive social and environmental benefits that would accrue from the introduction of UBI, as unconditional financial support would reduce workers’ anxiety in insecure labour markets, and the expending of valuable resources would be lessened if energy consumption was determined by society’s needs rather than by the requirements of labour markets tasked primarily with maximising employment. CFM—Symbolic Interaction and the Homeless

Greetings! The persistence of homelessness has attracted the attention of symbolic interactionists. Such attention acknowledges the obvious obdurate issues of poverty and inequality, and also keys on correlated issues pertaining to experiential trauma, substance abuse, mental illness, and the lack of affordable housing. Interactionists have also utilized the strengths of the perspective to examine prejudicial standpoints (that stigmatize the homeless), how the homeless manage their lived experiences (and deal with particular impressions), and agency among the homeless as they participate in the construction and reconstruction of their environments. From an interactionist perspective, homelessness is as much a cultural issue as much as it is an economic reality. Additionally, the variegated issues associated with homelessness became heightened in June, 2024, when the US Supreme Court ruled that state and local laws can penalize homeless people for sleeping outdoors. The ruling amplified the problem of interpreting what constitutes public vs. private spheres of existence and, borrowing from Mary Douglas (1966, *Purity and Danger: An Analysis of the Concepts of Pollution and Taboo*. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul), what is considered clean vs. dirty living. The right of the state to penalize those defined as homeless and perceived as out of place triggered a great deal of criticism. However, the subsequent acceptance of the Court's decision (and the enforcement of laws) also seemed, from the perspective of some activists, as a sign of societal apathy. In effect, symbolic interactionists are equipped with theoretical sophistication and methodological depth to tackle issues surrounding homelessness. In addition to conceptual dichotomies (e.g., public/private, clean/dirty, self /other, as well as self and society) an interactionist focus on identities, experiences, and histories (personal, social, and institutional) provides the tools for complex analysis and description. With this understanding, *Studies in Symbolic Interaction* invites submissions of abstracts that address issues surrounding homelessness. However, classical approaches to AI ethics often rely on abstract principles and Western-centric perspectives that may overlook the lived experience of those directly and even indirectly affected by AI systems. This themed issue seeks to address these issues by focusing on empirical approaches to AI ethics, which ground ethical reflection on concrete practices, values, and experiences. Empirical AI Ethics continues the so-called empirical turn in epistemology, the humanities and beyond by connecting insights gained through qualitative and quantitative research with value considerations. The analytical focus thereby shifts from a focus on top-down ethical principles to understanding what different actors and stakeholders consider desirable and undesirable practices, whether at the individual, societal or institutional level. Empirical AI Ethics, as advanced in this themed issue, enacts a turn towards a horizontal perspective (bottom-up or from within), captured in terms like ethics in practice, fieldwork ethics, empirical philosophy, or everyday ethics. While there are several approaches to empirical ethics, this issue will present reflections inspired by lines of tradition within philosophy and anthropology that build on a situated understanding of knowledge, including science and technology studies (STS), feminist care and biomedical ethics, postphenomenology, material semiotics, and praxeology. Unlike classical AI ethics, such empirical approaches to AI ethics do not determine a priori what is good and right. Instead, enquiry focuses on the perspectives and opinions of affected communities regarding normative issues emerging vis-à-vis the implementation of AI systems within various areas of life. In addition, through participant observation and different forms of public intervention or case study, hegemonic tools, procedures, norms, infrastructures, and institutions can be challenged by comparing them to alternative perspectives offering different conceptions of what is good and right. ISOC online course on Disability Leadership in Internet governance and digital rights

The ISOC Accessibility Standing Group is delighted to announce that the first ISOC Disability Leadership Training in Internet Governance and Digital Rights course will be open from 11th November, 2024 and run for three weeks. This has been made possible with the support of the Internet Society Foundation. The course provides information to equip disability advocates, Internet Governance (IG) practitioners, and trainers with the tools needed to promote digital inclusion for persons with disabilities. The objectives of this course are to: - Provide a thorough understanding of Internet governance policies, organisations and real-life opportunities for participation - Serve as a resource to integrate accessibility and disability into the broader Internet governance debate The course is self-paced but will be facilitated by tutor calls at least once per week. The first tutor call will be on 14th November so persons need to have completed module 0 and 1 before the 14th. To enrol, persons should first make sure they are a member of the Internet Society at: https://www.internetsociety.org/become-a-member/ and then follow the link https://bit.ly/DLIGDR to the course. The course is offered in a high and low bandwidth version that is the standard practice for the Internet Society.
