I recorded several things over the course of IGF 2024. This Day 0 event wasn't one of them - I actually downloaded it from IGF's YouTube <https://www.youtube.com/@igf/streams>, and just edited. Having one's session on the first day is always a risky proposition, and true to form, the Giganet Symposium, somewhat truncated from previous years, had its fair share of gremlins - you may observe an audio drop at the start of the Round Table, and that Monika Stachon's slides were not shared with the online participants. Hope is alive that the missing material may yet materialize, to be added to this archive. Notwithstanding all that, some great research was presented. Topics included ransomware, digital sovereignty, platform governance in Arab countries, online opposition in Iran, and data portability in China. The crowning jewel was a back-and-forth between a government rep and two distinguished academics over the current state of global Internet policy inclusion. Baltic Screen Media Review: Call for Papers Special Issue: "Generative AI in Audiovisual Media Production: Opportunities, Risks, and Emerging Paradigms” The integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into audiovisual content production marks a transformative moment for the film, television, creative industries, and visual and performing arts. As generative AI tools become increasingly sophisticated, they open up unprecedented opportunities for creativity and media production. These tools can assist in idea creation, scriptwriting, automating media editing, visual effects, synthesising voices, audio effects, synthetic video, 3D modelling, software tools and even creating entire virtual environments, potentially reshaping traditional workflows and lowering barriers to entry for creators worldwide. However, the rise of generative AI also presents a range of challenges and risks. Concerns about intellectual property, ethical implications, authenticity, labour relations, and the erosion of human creativity loom large. Furthermore, the deployment of AI in creative industries raises questions about algorithmic bias, the commodification of culture, and the potential monopolization of generative technologies by a few dominant players. This special issue of the Baltic Screen Media Review invites scholars, practitioners, and creators to critically examine the multifaceted implications of generative AI in audiovisual content production. We aim to explore both the promises and the pitfalls of this technological revolution, fostering a nuanced dialogue that bridges theoretical analysis and industry practice. Contributors are encouraged to interrogate how generative AI reshapes artistic expression, labour dynamics, audience expectations, and cultural paradigms. The issue draws on interdisciplinary frameworks to contextualize generative AI within broader cultural, economic, and technological trends. We encourage submissions that engage with theories of digital culture, platform capitalism, media production studies, and posthumanism. By situating generative AI within these theoretical landscapes, this special issue seeks to advance a critical understanding of how these technologies mediate and transform audiovisual culture. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: 1. Generative AI in Scriptwriting and Storytelling: How AI tools influence narrative structures, genres, and the creative process. 2. Visual Effects, Audio and World-Building: The role of AI in creating immersive environments, virtual characters, and audiovisual aesthetics. 3. Interactivity: Exploring how AI is employed in the creation of dynamic or real-time media, fostering audience-engaging audiovisual artworks, and enabling innovative interactions. Hi folks, Has anyone been granted access to Nextdoor’s API for academic research? It’s been almost a month since I requested access and I haven’t heard anything (despite a follow up about 10 days ago). I see buried on a subpage<https://developer.nextdoor.com/reference/displaying-availability> that the API is in a closed beta, but I don’t know if that’s still accurate (that statement is at least three months old, according to the “last updated” info on the page). I also see that this piece<https://journalqd.org/article/view/5891> about Nextdoor in JQD:DM from 2024 scraped data rather than collecting through an API, so I figure there’s a decent chance that Nextdoor hasn’t given any researchers access to the API yet. Dear AoIR Community, This is a reminder about our thrilling ICA25 Preconference, "*Debating Creator Culture*," hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder, College of Media, Communication, and Information, on June 11, 2025. *The submission deadline is January 31, 2025.* *What’s the debate all about?* Building on recent research into creators, influencers, and digital labor and visibility, we wish to collectively explore whether “creator studies” constitutes a new subfield, an extension of communication studies, or something else entirely. Revisiting foundational debates around disciplines and field-setting, we ask (borrowing from Baym, 2005): What is the “right term” for this scholarly community and its work? Is it an academic “field” or “discipline”?
