The PhD position is part of the DFG-funded research project INKleSS - Understanding the Importance of Non-Knowledge for Software Engineering on Social-Coding Platforms. The project is based at the Faculties of Business Studies and Automation & Computer Science of the Harz University of Applied Science, Wernigerode. The project aims to gain new insights into the dynamics and processes of non-knowledge and knowledge in software engineering. A challenging aspect of software engineering is dealing with various forms of non-knowledge related to implementing, re-engineering, maintaining, updating, and enhancing increasingly complex pieces of software. Non-knowledge can appear as missing knowledge, intentionally hidden knowledge, tacit knowledge, or strategically used non-knowledge. The project aims to improve understanding of the roles that these forms of non-knowledge plays in social interactions within software development teams. This will enable the development of strategies for better managing non-knowledge in this context, and provide guidance for organizations and open-source communities in their non-knowledge management. The project comprises an engineering component and a social science component. Best regards, Viktor Chagas Fluminense Federal University, Brazil ___ *Journal of Visual Political CommunicationCFP “Dark and Unethical Visual Politics” (Early 2026)* Visual Politics has gained significant prominence in recent years due to a series of controversial and unethical uses. Framing political actors, depicting contentious or satirical images, whether to build a positive interpretation or to mock authority, has always constituted a strategic and persuasive repertoire for political communication. Historically, the image was often seen as the last threshold for distinguishing facts from fakes. However the digital environment has reconfigured this status, drawing increased attention to malicious uses of images and their relation to spreading mis/disinformation and biased content. This call for papers for a special issue of the Journal of Visual Political Communication welcomes theoretical and empirical contributions concerned with these contested uses. This issue aims to bring together a body of studies focused on visual research challenges and agendas that emphasize images in contexts that are dangerous for democracy and that may pose risks to trust in institutions, threats to socio-environmental justice, or undermine current epistemic regimes, political opponents or minoritized groups. Manuscripts may present reflections on the dark side of visual politics or focus on case studies from different countries and regions. Topics may include, but are not limited to, discussions on: • Ethical and epistemological boundaries of visual political communication • Methodological aspects of investigating unethical uses of images • Generative artificial intelligence images or political deepfakes during elections • Hateful far-right memes, misogynistic and supremacist troll armies, and their political implications • The image serving anti-immigration nationalism and authoritarian populisms • Apocryphal visual campaigns and coordinated slanderous visual attacks • Critical aspects of the visual politics of disinformation as well as historical and scientific denialism • Fabrication of fake images of non-consensual pornography targeting political actors • Problems generated by algorithmic discrimination in the political arena • Cybersecurity issues concerning state visual surveillance, citizen privacy, and abusive biometric recognition • Controversial military use of computer vision in drones and autonomous weapons for human-unsupervised lethal attacks • Alteration of visual evidence to mislead the justice system or create false narratives Full papers must range between 7,000 and 9,000 words and can be co-authored. Illustrations related to the issue's theme are welcomed, as long as ethical limits for discrimination and graphic violence are taken into account and the restrictions of double-blind peer review are considered. Theoretical papers and methodological discussions are welcomed, but preferably in combination with visual material and empirical analysis of imagery. Comparative studies, historical analyses, and case studies using qualitative or quantitative approaches are also invited. The special issue also accepts proposals for curation of images, including photos, illustrations, diagrams, memes, or cartoons that relate to the dark and unethical uses of images, as long as copyright is fully respected. No APC fee is applied to the Journal of Visual Political Communication, except in case authors want to publish their articles in Open Access mode. Persuasive Technology is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at influencing people’s attitudes and/or behaviors through persuasion, but not through coercion or deception. The research community aims at enriching people’s lives in various domains such as health and sustainability by supporting people in setting and achieving their own goals, thus helping them change their behavior. The 2025 conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus at the 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina. The previous successful conferences have been organized in Wollongong, Limassol, Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Claremont, Copenhagen, Columbus, Linköping, Sydney, Padua, Chicago, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and Waterloo. The conference series seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia working with various topics of persuasive technology. Workshops are meant to gather a number of people to work interactively on an emerging topic and exchange ideas. Tutorials are intended to help people attending the conference organize a related scientific meeting on a specific topic or instruct on a specific practice. Over the last decade, however, it has become clear that the human and social components of the overall systems are rate-limiting factors in those transformations. What is needed now and for the foreseeable future is attention to the security, safety, and trust dimensions that emerge when people interact with digital technologies. We seek applications from scholars who work to address this intersection directly. An ideal candidate will have some core technical foundation, but will be working with technology to address other parts of the security, safety, and trust system that depends on people and institutions as much as it does on technology. This includes areas like trusted/trustworthy algorithms and algorithmic decision making. We are looking for scholars whose work takes into account multicultural environments and issues of poverty and exclusion on a global basis and assesses trust more broadly than simply transparency or explainability. We are inviting applicants for post-doctoral fellows who would support a project related to the Grand Challenge’s focus on digital technology and youth (ages 11-25) mental health. The Grand Challenge aims to foster a collaborative, interdisciplinary community conducting cutting edge research about both the impact of digital technology on healthy and unhealthy youth development, and its potential to advance intervention and prevention solutions. Projects aligned with this Grand Challenge advance understanding of the role of digital technologies in healthy development, and the ways that generation and dissemination of digital mental health programs can help address the youth mental health crisis. Post-doctoral fellows will have a primary position with one of the two research teams listed below, with specific responsibilities as assigned by the faculty mentor(s) on a Grand Challenge related project. Postdoctoral fellows will also receive interdisciplinary mentoring and professional development through the Grand Challenge and may have the opportunity to collaborate on other Grand Challenge affiliated projects, as well as to potentially develop their own projects. A.) Dr. Brent Kitchens seeks a postdoctoral research associate to join a team of experienced researchers investigating the impacts of misinformation and other aspects of online information quality on mental health and other outcomes for young adults. This research is focused on 1) defining aspects of online information quality, 2) understanding their impacts on young adults through experiments or other primary data collection interfaces, and 3) analyzing information consumption behaviors of young adults utilizing propriety observational clickstream and search data from a large panel of internet users. Outcomes of this research are intended to potentially include academic publications and conference presentations, grant proposals, science communication to lay audiences, proposed interventions, and policy recommendations. As this research at the intersection of digital technology, information media, and youth mental health is transdisciplinary, the position is open to candidates with a Ph.D. (at time of start) from a range of relevant research backgrounds and interests in one or more of these areas. Quantitative skills (analytics and/or statistics) would be valued, but we are also open to candidates with a more qualitative research background. The position offers a unique opportunity to bridge technical innovation with societal needs, shaping future policies and interventions to support healthy youth development in the digital age. B.) Dr. Lana Swartz seeks a postdoctoral research associate to join her team, Exploring Youth Financial Well-being in the Digital Environment. Young people face a challenging and rapidly changing environment of financial tools, choices, and information. Consumer financial services apps offer new opportunities but also predatory inclusion. Financial influencers promise to help young people navigate this landscape but are also driven by the attention economy. Generative AI promises to add to the complexity. This research investigates young people’s (age 18–25) experience of their financial lives and how that experience informs their financial attitudes and practices. In this context, how should we think about the future of financial literacy and financial wellbeing? This project seeks a post-doctoral fellow to assist in conducting and managing this research project. The ideal candidate will have qualitative research experience, such as interviews, online ethnography, and analysis of socio-technical systems; experience working with diverse populations of young people; interest in digital financial youth cultures and research experience digital life more broadly; a Ph.D. in communication, media studies, information studies, sociology, anthropology, or adjacent fields. The fellowship includes a 12-month salary ($60,000-$65,000 based on experience) and benefits for up to 2 years. Postdoctoral fellows funded by the Grand Challenge will be expected to participate in the Grand Challenge community, including works-in-progress meetings, professional development activities, and programming including trainings, conferences, and other events. Qualifications: Education: Applicants have earned a Ph.D. by August, 2025. The discipline of the Ph.D. is open but focus of the applicant’s scholarship should be related to healthy youth development and digital technology.
