2 ASIS&T Webinars - Semantic Web and Linked Data
by Richard Hill 22 Feb '11

22 Feb '11

[Apologies for multiple postings] ASIS&T presents the following Webinars Introduction to Semantic Web and Linked Data Date: March 9th 2011 11:30pm 12:30pm Cost: ASIS&T Members: $25 Non-Members: $59 Presenter: Karen Coyle Register at http://www.asis.org/Conferences/webinars/2011/linked-data.html This webinar will cover the basic concepts behind the semantic web and its implementation through linked data. While conceptually very simple, the linked data model is a significant departure from our current models that are based on records and database technologies. We'll cover the underlying entity-relationship structure, "triples" and "statements," the importance of identifiers and vocabularies. In addition, we will look briefly at the functionality that this model supports and the user benefits that come with it. Linked Data, Tools and Technologies Date: March 15th 2011 11:30pm 12:30pm Cost: ASIS&T Members: $25 Non-Members: $59 Presenter: Karen Coyle Register at http://www.asis.org/Conferences/webinars/2011/linked-data.html The Semantic Web Activity of the W3C defines the basic requirements for linked data functionality, starting with four rules and moving on with specific standards for data definition, identification, and discovery. This webinar will describe some of the basic data and software standards, as well as demonstrate implementations such as existing registries and vocabularies. Some of the issues for discussion will be data and vocabulary maintenance, the question of data provenance, and techniques for metadata extension. We will briefly explore some current linked data activities in cultural heritage organizations. Speaker: Karen Coyle Karen Coyle is a librarian with over thirty years of experience with library technology. She now consults in a variety of areas relating to digital libraries. Karen has published dozens of articles and reports, most available on her web site, kcoyle.net. She has served on standards committees including the MARC standards group (MARBI), NISO committee AX for the OpenURL standard, and was an ALA representative to the e-book standards development that led to the ePub standard. She follows, writes, and speaks on a wide range policy areas, including intellectual property, privacy, and public access to information. As a consultant she works primarily on metadata development and technology planning. She is currently investigating the possibilities offered by the semantic web and linked data technology Dick Hill Richard Hill Executive Director American Society for Information Science and Technology 1320 Fenwick Lane, Suite 510 Silver Spring, MD 20910 FAX: (301) 495-0810 (301) 495-0900

Cfp Reminder - GJSS Special issue on virtual worlds and online social networks
by Delia Dumitrica 22 Feb '11

22 Feb '11

Final Reminder: Call for Papers and Book Reviews - Deadline: March 15, 2011 Methodological approaches to the study of virtual environments and online social networks The Graduate Journal of Social Science (GJSS) announces a Call for Papers and Book Reviews for a special issue dealing with methodological approaches to the study of virtual environments and online social networks. The journal encourages the submission of work by MSc/ MA/MS, MPhil, PhD students and junior academics from all geographic regions. All papers are submitted to a blind peer review process. The special issue is scheduled for December 2011. Papers: The proliferation of virtual worlds such as The Sims, Second Life, World of Warcraft and of online social networks such as blogs or social networking applications (Facebook, LinkedIn, Hi5) has been met with an enthusiastic interest from researchers across disciplines. Scholars in anthropology, communication and cultural studies, economics, education, psychology and sociology have become increasingly involved in the study of such environments, bringing along not only discipline-specific questions and theories, but also various methodological approaches. This special issue aims at mapping some of the methodological approaches to the study of virtual environments, and welcomes both theoretical and empirical analyses that address them. The interest here is in what methods graduate researchers choose to use, the problems they face in trying to use them and the ways in which these methods are being adapted in relation to these virtual sites of study. Graduate students doing empirical work on virtual worlds and online social networks from all disciplines are strongly encouraged to submit papers dealing with the processes of choosing, applying and critically evaluating their methods. While we expect contributions to vary according to the particular focus of investigation, questions such as the following may be relevant: What are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods? Are such methods developed specifically for the study of virtual worlds and/or online social networks, or are they adaptations of traditional research methods in social sciences? Are there specific disciplines, theories, or academic frameworks that offer more suitable insights regarding such methods- or can using them suggest limiting the scope of this new research environment? Authors are encouraged to submit papers addressing questions such as: - How to choose a suitable method for the study of virtual worlds and/ or online social networks? - Methods for exploring the social and cultural aspects of virtual worlds and/ or online social networks. - Methods for exploring the technical aspects of virtual worlds and/ or online social networks. - Criteria for evaluating research on virtual worlds and/ or online social networks. - Simulations as research methods: problems, recommendations, evaluation. - Methods for collaborative research in virtual environments and/ or online social networks. - Ethical issues. - Immersion: do we need to be users of virtual worlds/ online social networks to study them? All papers must be submitted electronically by March 15, 2011 to <dddumitr(a)ucalgary.ca>. Articles should be between 5,000 - 8,000 words in length (including footnotes but excluding references). Short essays (2,000 - 3,000 words) and book reviews on this topic are also welcome. All submissions must be anonymized and accompanied by the GJSS article submission form (which can be downloaded from the GJSS website). Please include an abstract, a short author bio and 3-5 keywords. For more information on the stylistic guidelines, please check the GJSS website at http://gjss.org. For any further inquiries and to submit an article, please contact Delia Dumitrica, special issue editor at <dddumitr(a)ucalgary.ca>. Book Reviews: We are also looking for reviews of books published between 2008-2010 dealing with methodological approaches to virtual worlds and online social networks. Ideally, reviewers have their own copy of the book. Book reviews should be between 1,000 - 1,5000 words and should not only describe the book, but also critically engage with the points raised. If you would like to propose a book review for this special issue, please contact Delia Dumitrica, special issue editor at <dddumitr(a)ucalgary.ca>. MA/PhD opportunities in Sociology @ Essex
by Anderson, Ben 22 Feb '11

22 Feb '11

As part of our new UK Economic and Social Research Council Doctoral Training Centre we have a number of MA/MSc/Phd scholarships available for study across the social sciences at the University of Essex. In Sociology we're offering a number of training pathways including: • Sociological Research • Survey Methodology • Longitudinal Social Research which include supervision in (amongst others) • Economic sociology • Science in society • Survey methodology We would welcome applications from students interested in studying most aspects of socio-technical change through these pathways and approaches. We would especially welcome students interested in making use of: • 'Understanding Society', the new UK 40,000-strong household longitudinal study (http://www.understandingsociety.org.uk/) and it's predecessor the British Household Panel Survey (http://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/survey/bhps) Together these datasets provide a unique longitudinal resource tracking the socio-ecomic circumstances and, more latterly, new media use of UK citizens over the last 20 years. Both of these surveys are/were lead by our colleagues at Essex's renowned Institute for Social and Economic Research (http://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/) to which our students have everyday access. • two unique telephone call record datasets from the late 1990s collected by BT plc and licensed to the University of Essex for research purposes. The first contains records of all outgoing calls made by a sample of 100,000 households across the UK in each of October and March in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The second contains all outgoing and incoming calls made or received by a sample of c 400 households in 1998-2001 who were recruited to a 3 year longitudinal household panel survey which included detailed media use and a week-long time-use diary (survey data available at http://www.esds.ac.uk/findingData/snDescription.asp?sn=4607) For more info on available studentships and how to apply see http://www.essex.ac.uk/sociology/news_and_seminars/newsEvent.aspx?e_id=2852 Anyone wishing for more information on the call record datasets can contact me directly but please note that we do _not_ normally license their usage outside the University. regards -- Ben Anderson Sociology @ Essex http://www.essex.ac.uk/sociology/staff/profile.aspx?ID=118 Centre for Research in Economic Sociology and Innovation http://cresi.essex.ac.uk/getperson?personID=1

Call for Teaching Ideas - Social Media & Revolution
by Anthony Nadler 21 Feb '11

21 Feb '11

Julie Wilson and I created the website www.teachingmedia.org to help college-level, media studies faculty and instructors share teaching ideas and resources such as recommended readings, media clips, assignments, and syllabi. We're trying to create an online commons for media studies pedagogy. In addition to housing an ongoing database of teaching ideas, we're periodically posting calls for ideas about specific topics. Our first topic: In the wake of recent revolutions and popular protests in Moldova, Iran, Tunisia, and Egypt, there has been a lot of speculation about the relationship between these social uprisings, authoritarian states, and social media applications such Facebook and Twitter. How might you examine this relationship in an undergraduate media studies class? Have you come across any texts, articles, or podcasts you’d recommend assigning? Any ideas for special assignments or exercises? Please visit www.teachingmedia.org to join this discussion or contribute other teaching ideas to this collective resource. Tony Nadler PhD Candidate, Communication Studies University of Minnesota
