Internet Taxation: Call for Papers (deadline 31 May 2011)
by David Sutcliffe 21 Feb '11

21 Feb '11

Hello all, Policy and Internet is calling for papers for a forthcoming special issue on Internet taxation (paper deadline: 31 May 2011). See: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news/?id=453 The seamless transmission of digitally malleable products across jurisdictions, with the potential for bypassing of governmental controls, leads to many unique problems in Internet taxation. The issue will synthesize the extant research in the area and include recent research developments. The goal is to improve the understanding of the issues involved for both researchers and policy makers, to provide policy recommendations, and to suggest avenues for further research in the area. Papers should be based on empirical research and analysis and help to further theoretical and/or methodological development. In all cases, authors should consider the policy implications of the research presented. Please contact the editors (policyandinternet(a)oii.ox.ac.uk) if you have any queries about how your paper might fit in the issue. Policy and Internet: http://www.psocommons.org/policyandinternet/ Best wishes, David [Sutcliffe, Managing Ed.]

Dissertation on linguistic and pragmatic aspects of corporate blogs (open access PDF)
by Cornelius Puschmann 21 Feb '11

21 Feb '11

<shameless self-promotion> Dear all, allow me to briefly point those of you studying internet communication from the perspective of linguistics/rhetorics/genre studies (as well as anyone else who might be interested) to my dissertation on corporate blogging, published last year with Göttingen University Press: Puschmann, C. (2010). *The corporate blog as an emerging genre of computer-mediated communication: features, constraints, discourse situation. * (S. Hagenhoff, D. Hogrefe, E. Mittler, M. Schumann, G. Spindler, & V. Wittke, eds.) Göttinger Schriften zur Internetforschung (Vol. 7). Göttingen: Universitätsverlag Göttingen. Abstract: Digital technology is increasingly impacting how we keep informed, how we communicate professionally and privately, and how we initiate and maintain relationships with others. The function and meaning of new forms of computer-mediated communication (CMC) is not always clear to users on the onset and must be negotiated by communities, institutions and individuals alike. This thesis examines the linguistic and rhetorical properties of the weblog, another relatively young genre of CMC, to determine its function in private and professional (business) communication. It approaches the question of what functions blogs realize for authors and readers and argues that corporate blogs, which, like blogs by private individuals, are a highly diverse in terms of their form, function and intended audience, essentially mimic key characteristics of private blogs in order to appear open, non-persuasive and personal, all essential qualities for companies that wish to make a positive impression on their constituents. Undergrad software studies seminar question
by Jonathan Cohn 21 Feb '11

21 Feb '11

dear AoIR Listers, I am currently working on a syllabus for an undergraduate software studies seminar. While I have been able to find essays that perform close readings on video games and digital art pieces, I have been having more trouble with finding articles that perform similar types of close readings on commercial software (like Microsoft Word, Final Cut Pro, TurboTax, WindowsXP, etc). If anyone knows of good essays that employ semiotic, phenomenological, and/or deconstructive methodologies in the analysis of these forms of software, I would be quite appreciative. Also, I would love to know if there are particular journals that specialize in printing essays of this type. thank you very much, Jonathan Cohn PhD Candidate Cinema and Media Studies, UCLA

IR12 help with Paticipation Panel version 2
by Peter Timusk 21 Feb '11

21 Feb '11

Hello are there any senior scholars who would like to help put together another participation and community/politics/art online panel? I would like to write about exclusion and the digital divide and DIY punk rock art as well there was early interest in elections participation online when I first suggested a political participation panel. There are two of us interested in this panel 2 submission right now and I would need a more senior scholar to help the process along. Although I sometimes write on the Internet at work at Statistics Canada it is not my main duties at work and I am not working in a school nor do I have a Ph.D. I think we would want more than one participation panel and more performance arts than just online games eh? I for one would love to play music live for example and bring my guitar and I am trying to get the Net into lyrics. Peter Timusk B.Math statistics. Call for Chapters - "The Intersectional Internet: Race, Gender, and Culture Online" [March 15, 2011]
by André Brock 21 Feb '11

21 Feb '11

Colleagues, Please pass this on to anyone you know who might be interested... ----------------------------------------------------------- *Call for Chapters - “The Intersectional Internet: Race, Gender, and Culture Online” edited by André Brock (University of Iowa)* *Technology as Culture: Media, Machines, and Ideology* I am soliciting research articles or essays for an edited collection on the production, maintenance, or contestation of cultural identities in information and communication technologies. I invite contributions from scholars and practitioners in any field or endeavor that approaches information and communication technologies from a cultural or humanist perspective. *I am interested in chapters that contextualize ICTs within sociocultural contexts drawing upon the interactions of multiple categorical axes of identity (e.g., race and class). * ** The collection, entitled “The Intersectional Internet: Race, Sex, and Culture Online”, will be published by Peter Lang in late 2012 as part of the Digital Editions series (Steve Jones, series editor). For this collection, intersectionality frames the examination of intersecting, multiple identities that complicate, extend, and maintain Internet/ICT beliefs, design, and practices. ICTs recreate social worlds *in situ*, removed from direct physical and emotional feedback and contravening time and geographical constraints. However, this social separation from the material world still retains ideologies born of physical, temporal, and social beliefs. That ideological retention can be seen in technological beliefs privileging governments over citizens, corporations over people, and the expansion of white privilege in cyberspace. Contributions should address technocultural beliefs from a structural perspective, examining institutional discourses about technology’s effects on perceptions of intellect, sociability, progress, or culture as mediated by technology. Contributions to this collection could consider but are not limited to: - technology-based debates on privacy, surveillance, or insurrection - identity formation in new media - public policy debates about the expansion of broadband to underserved areas - Internal or external discourses about technology’s possibilities for mainstream or minority cultures. - technoculture and the West - the Social Web a decade after 9/11 Authors are requested to submit an abstract of no more than 750 words (in plain text or word format) by *March 15, 2010* to andre-brock(a)uiowa.edu. Authors will receive confirmation of receipt immediately and decision notifications will go out on April 1, 2011. The abstract submission should contain the names and institutions of the author along with contact information (name, e-mail, postal address, phone and fax numbers) and the working title of the proposed essay/writing. Submitted manuscripts should be original work, not concurrently submitted to any other venue. NOTE: Only electronic submissions will be accepted. -- Andre Brock Assistant Professor - Library and Information Science/POROI University of Iowa Iowa City, IA 52242

Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University
by Matthew Weber 19 Feb '11

19 Feb '11

The Center for Technology, Entertainment and Media (CTEM) at Duke University¹s Fuqua School of Business invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship to begin Fall 2011 for applicants whose research lies at the intersection of information technology, media, and business. Preference will be given to applicants studying the social and organizational context of computer-enabled information technologies (e.g., storage, networks, databases), communication technologies (e.g., mobile phones, Instant Messaging, Web conferencing), digital media (e.g., songs, shows, videos), social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), or other emerging collaborative technologies (e.g., Google Docs, Skype, Second Life). See the conference URL below for an illustration of the relevant topics addressed by CTEM: http://events.fuqua.duke.edu/immersion/ The Center for Technology, Entertainment and Media focuses on issues critical to firms in the IT industry (e.g., Google, IBM, Intel, Apple) and the Entertainment/Media industry (e.g., Time Warner, Disney, News Corp, Viacom) as well as the consequences of Technology and Entertainment/Media development and use for employees, firms, industries, and society. For example, business could benefit from greater knowledge about a media industry disrupted by digital technologies that are shifting how music, television, and films are viewed and distributed. Business could also benefit from greater knowledge about tools being developed by firms in the IT industry to facilitate virtual organizations in which individuals and teams can work from any place at any time through information and communication technologies. The Fuqua School of Business provides an outstanding environment for research, and topics related to technology and media are studied across Duke University, such as in computer science, information studies and information science, and sociology. The post-doctoral fellow will be expected to establish a research program and contribute to the intellectual environment of the Fuqua School of Business. He or she would work closely with Professor Jonathon Cummings (Faculty Director) and Professor Tony O¹Driscoll (Executive Director), and other collaborations with faculty at Fuqua and at Duke will be encouraged. The salary is $65,000/year plus benefits. Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. by August 2011. The post-doctoral fellowship is exclusively for recent Ph.D. graduates. Eligible candidates must not have previously held a faculty or postdoctoral position. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a brief summary of past and current research, and a statement of proposed research to Emily Xavier <emily.xavier(a)duke.edu>, Faculty Affairs Personnel Coordinator. Candidates should include the names and contact information for three individuals who would be willing to provide letters of recommendation. The candidate¹s advisor will be asked to verify the date of Ph.D. completion. Applications received by April 1, 2011 will receive full consideration. Duke University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to increasing the diversity of its employees. We strongly encourage applications from women and underrepresented minority candidates.
