Not sure if y'all saw this or not, but kudos to Ross Anderson and Cambridge for standing up both for principle and rationality. Ross's letter in response to the banking association was brilliant, imho. by Anna Haverinen 29 Dec '10

Dear all, I remember someone inquiring a some time ago about the notion of years in "internet time"? I also remember hearing that three months of internet time is one human year, but I need a citation for my article. Any ideas where could I look for? Thanks in advance! Call for articles
by MARIA AMPARO LASEN DIAZ 28 Dec '10

28 Dec '10

TRANS 16 (2012) Transcultural Music Review ISSN: 1697-0101 CALL FOR ARTICLES Special Issue: New uses of music in media TRANS- Transcultural Music Review 16 (2012) will publish a special dossier on the new forms of music in audiovisual media. The dossier will be prepared in collaboration with the research group “Música y medios audiovisuales” from the Society for Ethnomusicology-SIBE/IASPM-Spain and will be edited by Teresa Fraile, Eduardo Viñuela, and María Edurne Zuazu. For this dossier, we are particularly interested in the role of music in the emergence of new genres (such as mash-ups, lip-dubs, etc.) and in the transformation of the discursive strategies of the traditional media (film, TV programs, music videos, video games, etc.). The contemporary audiovisual panorama is constantly changing. On the one hand, there is a fruitful interchange between different genres and formats, such as the dialogue between music video, advertising and film; an interchange in which the music is deeply involved. This enables music to take different functions in the discourses of these media, thus transforming them, and at the same time, opens a new palette of expressive resources. On the other hand, the spread and democratization of new technologies has brought about these new musical genres that also imply new forms of consumption and point toward a different aesthetic framework. Music is now at the core of a boiling, creative audiovisual production where its relationships with image and the other sound elements are not what they used to be, obliging us to rethink our approaches and understanding of the role of music in media. We welcome contributions that approach these new phenomena and processes, especially those with an interdisciplinary perspective. Some topics include but are not limited to the following: Topics: · Music and the blurring of media genres and formats. · Sound art and image (sound installations, etc.). · Music in film trailers. · Audiovisual formats in live performance. · New forms of consumption and technology. · Rockumentaries or “making of” the album, band, etc. · Production of music for and with mobile technology (cell phones, MP3 players, etc.). · New theoretical models for media analysis. We open the call for submission of articles on this topic. Articles may be written in English, Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese. Deadline for submitting originals: October 15, 2011. Blogs & Twitter Research in the Nigerian Context
by Presley Ifukor 27 Dec '10

27 Dec '10

I am new to the list and was wondering if there's anyone working on Nigerian Internet discourse / communication. My paper on "Blogging and Twittering the Nigerian 2007 General Elections" has just been published in the December 2010 issue of Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society: http://bst.sagepub.com/content/30/6/398 This article examines the linguistic construction of textual messages in the use of blogs and Twitter in the Nigerian 2007 electoral cycle comprising the April 2007 general elections and rerun elections in April, May, and August 2009. A qualitative approach of discourse analysis is used to present a variety of discursive acts that blogging and microblogging afford social media users during the electoral cycle. The data are culled from 245 blog posts and 923 tweets. The thesis of the study is that citizens’ access to social media electronically empowers the electorates to be actively involved in democratic governance. Electronic empowerment is a direct result of access to social media (and mobile telephony) by more citizens who constitute the electorates. This encourages more public discussions about politics and makes the democratic process more dynamic than in the pre-social media era. An analysis of the data shows that there is a dialectical relationship between social media discourse and the process of political empowerment. The paper is part of my PhD at the University of Osnabrueck, Germany. The project's synopsis and related publications are here: http://www.ifaa.uni-osnabrueck.de/Sprachwissenschaft/PhdProjects-Ifukor Thank you and best of the season, Presley Ifukor Osnabrueck, Germany

software to video record interaction through Skype video conference
by Gabriela Bulla 25 Dec '10

25 Dec '10

Dear AIR list members, My name is Gabriela da Silva Bulla, I am a PhD student in Applied Linguistics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brazil), and my PhD research proposal focuses on the joint construction of collaborative learning communities in online additional language courses. Therefore, one of the interactional data I am going to deal with is going to be generated while participants are engaged in pedagogical activities through Skype video conferences. Thus, I would like to know if any of you could give me a little help by *suggesting any software that would make it possible for me to video record the computer screen and the participants’ voices at the same time while interacting through Skype video conferences*. Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Gabriela. -- Gabriela da Silva Bulla Doutoranda em Linguística Aplicada (PPG-Letras) Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre/RS, Brasil gsbulla(a)gmail.com

23 Dec '10

Item for posting: IXmaps - TrGen Please consider downloading and running our tracegen program - TrGen - it assists to populate the database for the project. Thanks! [http://www.ixmaps.ca] is an interactive tool under development designed to permit internet users to see the route that data packets take across North America. Project goals are to render visible to users interesting aspects of the internet core related to everyday usage, e.g. NSA surveillance, deep packet inspection (DPI), carrier hotel ownership, energy (in)efficiency; so as to counteract the tendency to regard the internet core as an immaterial, virtual, placeless 'cloud', by showing its geographical and physical concreteness and contingency; promote an understanding of the internet core amenable to public policy engagement; develop a research tool for conducting critical internet backbone investigations, and for presenting findings publicly; and enroll others (users, activists, researchers) in building a database of internet sites of interest. IXmaps is affiliated with The New Transparency Project: Surveillance and Social Sorting project at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. The project team consists of Dr. David J. Phillips, Associate Professor and Chair of Doctoral Studies, Faculty of Information and Dr. Andrew Clement, Professor, Faculty of Information and Coordinator, Information Policy Research Program as well as Dr. Nancy Paterson, Associate Professor, Ontario College of Art & Design and post-doctoral fellow, Faculty of Information.
