Professor Wellman, Might I suggest a cheeky response to some of your URL-hungry twitter folks? Say, for example, you had tweeted about Robert Gibbs leaving the White House... http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=nyt+gibbs+to+leave+as+white+house+press+secretary They also have a handy tiny.url button on LMGTFY to hide your true intentions. (A bit less mean-spirited than a friend of mine who sometimes instructs people to FGI, or Friggin' Google It.) -Justin ------------------------------------------------------- Justin Reedy Doctoral candidate Department of Communication University of Washington jsreedy(a)gmail.com jreedy(a)uw.edu ------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 3:00 PM, <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org> wrote: > > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > From: Barry Wellman <wellman(a)chass.utoronto.ca> > To: aoir list <air-l(a)aoir.org> > Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2011 21:50:38 -0500 > Subject: [Air-L] a humourous aside to e- vs paper references > I read the PAPER NY Times most days (and just to confuse things, the one > that comes to Toronto is not the one that stays in NYC or goes to LA). > > When I tweet, I'll often just say "[title] in the NYT, 4Jan11." How about the Chicago Manual of Style citation guidelines, 16th edition? Presumably journal editors/reviewers would find *those* acceptable. http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html I quote here, minus italics: Book published electronically If a book is available in more than one format, cite the version you consulted. For books consulted online, list a URL; include an access date only if one is required by your publisher or discipline. If no fixed page numbers are available, you can include a section title or a chapter or other number. 1. Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (New York: Penguin Classics, 2007), Kindle edition. 2. Philip B. Kurland and Ralph Lerner, eds., The Founders’ Constitution (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1987), accessed February 28, 2010, http://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/. 3. Austen, Pride and Prejudice. 4. Kurland and Lerner, Founder’s Constitution, chap. 10, doc. 19. Austen, Jane. Pride and Prejudice. New York: Penguin Classics, 2007. Kindle edition. As i said, i don't think you necessarily need them for direct quotes, and i think you don't necessarily need them in certain other common sense instances, but sometimes... for reference page numbers or other indexical values are necessary. If a reviewer or editor can't find what you are talking about in a text, they should be... worried... Currently then, the practice is to include them for due diligence. Whether, that changes in our lifetime... i don't know, it could. Should we reject it or change it, for my part, no. I like page numbers immensely, they make my life much easier. -- Dr. Lane DeNicola Lecturer in Digital Anthropology Department of Anthropology University College London http://www.lanedenicola.name

Games
by Alex Tuna Amsel 05 Jan '11

Hi all, I joined this list fairly recently as I'm fascinated by the topic and considering studying it further at a later date. I have noticed that games have been mentioned on a few occasionsand, if it's of any interest, I thought I should point out that you have a game industry veteran & BAFTA member on this list. I've been running a small game studio since 1996 - indeed, all our work at that time came from contacts I made over the Internet. If anyone wants to contact me off list about anything game related, please go ahead. If it's of interest to those of you who study TV + social networks, I've also worked on an experimental Twitter project focusing on TV & the digital water cooler. For my sins, I worked on how Channel 4/Big Brother should use Twitter in the UK, and co-ran a very successful Twitter 'event' based around Europe's music oddity Eurovision. This featured leading UK comedy writer Graham Linehan tweeting & sending pictures live from his sofa during the event (#twumpet, the follow up to #badmovieclub). -- Alex Amsel | Tuna M : +44(0)7771 524 632 | Skype : Alex Amsel Twitter : alex_amsel | Blog : http://www.tunahq.com/blog

a humourous aside to e- vs paper references

I read the PAPER NY Times most days (and just to confuse things, the one that comes to Toronto is not the one that stays in NYC or goes to LA). When I tweet, I'll often just say "[title] in the NYT, 4Jan11." But some tweeps demand to know the URL! I can't even give the page #, as it differs by regional edition. CFP: Globalizing Technology and Innovation Policies: Interpretative and Critical Approaches
by jeremy hunsinger 04 Jan '11

04 Jan '11

Call for papers or proposals: 6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN INTERPRETIVE POLICY ANALYSIS: DISCURSIVE SPACES. POLITICS, PRACTICES AND POWER http://www.ipa-2011.cardiff.ac.uk/ I soliciting papers for the panel: Panel 20: Globalizing Technology and Innovation Policies: Interpretative and Critical Approaches Chair: Jeremy Hunsinger, Center for Digital Discourse and Culture, Virginia Tech, send proposals to: jhuns(a)vt.edu This panel addresses technology and innovation policies as politico-ethico-juridico- technical systems comprised of arrangements of things and peoples. Through it, we are particularly interested in the transitions these systems undergo as they migrate from local and national applications to transnational and global systems. These systems undergo significant translations, modifications, and reorganizations as they come to match the sensemaking practices of global and transnational interests and their policymaking regimes. Examples of such transitions and translations ongoing now are: questions of information technology, intellectual property, genetically modified organisms, internet governance, STEM education funding, Mode 2 centered research funding and many, many others. Given the plurality of possibilities for this panel, it is important to maintain two themes in your submissions: 1. center on technology, innovation, or research policy, 2. the trend from local to global in the application of these policies. As fitting with the core concepts of the conference, this panel will consider critical and interpretive approaches with those two themes Submissions due 5 February, 2011 Jeremy Hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech http://www.tmttlt.com Whoever ceases to be a student has never been a student. -George Iles

I just invented another way of citing e-books
by Barry Wellman 04 Jan '11

04 Jan '11

1. I agree with Jeremy: direct quotes are easily searchable. 2. For citing ideas, when a 550 page book is a bit too broad ;-) then why not put at the end of the reference the first phrase of the apra. that you are referencing. Such as this random reference: Hunsinger, J. _Why VT Lost to Stanford_. Miami: Orange Bowl Press. e-book: "Wellman's analysis is persuasive". Citing from a Kindle
by richard.ling＠telenor.com 04 Jan '11

Dear all, I have started to download some academic books onto a Kindle account. It is ok for reading and for noting different thoughts as I read. However, since there is no page numbering, how do you cite the location of material in the books when you include it in your own work? What are the requirements for in-line cites and for the bibliography? Are the line numbers unique for Kindle and there is another set for the Apple iBooks, etc? What is a modern scholar to do?
