The Institute of Communication, Culture and Information Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The start date of the position is July 1, 2011. We seek a candidate who transcends traditional divisions, with an active research agenda that embraces the cultural and social influences of social networking and social media. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses focusing on this area of specialization and s/he will have a graduate appointment in one of the University’s tri-campus graduate departments. Completion of a PhD and evidence of excellent teaching and research abilities are required. The successful candidate will be expected to commit to shaping the future of the Institute in the field of social networking and social media and to assist in developing the ICCIT as a centre of research and teaching excellence. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and teaching experience. ICCIT is a newly established Institute at the University of Toronto Mississauga that focuses on teaching and research excellence in its three undergraduate programs: Communication, Culture and Information Technology (CCIT), Digital Enterprise Management (DEM), and Professional Writing and Communication (PWC). Apologies for the cross-postings: Call for Abstracts: Seamlessly Mobile?: Mobile Communication @ a Crossroads 2011 International Communication Association (ICA) Pre-conference Workshop http://sociomobile.org/mobile2011/Mobile2011/home.html May 25 – 26, 2011, Boston MA, USA Mobile phones are becoming increasingly adept as ubiquitous tools that serve purposes beyond that of mere voice communication. How we conceptualize mobile-mediated communication alongside computer- mediated communication is less distinct as access to the Internet becomes more integrated into mobile phone devices. Are people moving toward a more seamless integration of mobile and computer media as supporting their communication needs? Is the integration of the Internet into mobile phones shifting how people conceptualize what it means to be “online” vs. “offline”? Does this shift in mobile communication bear any social consequences? This preconference will provide a venue for innovative scholars from around the world who are doing research in the area of mobile communication. It will give them a chance to gather and discuss the challenges that this shift in the use of mobile phones poses not only for the users but for those doing research on mobile communication. We welcome abstracts that will focus on the following areas related to these provocative questions: • Patterns of mobile phone use and differences related to gender, age, lifestyle, culture, and/or access • Ethics and social responsibility of use, shifts in social expectations of remote vs. co-present others • Threats to privacy and issues of surveillance as they relate to technological innovations like GPS & location devices. • Research design and methodological challenges, including finding venues for one’s work • The expansion of online and offline social networking and its demands • Technology, design, and accessibility issues/challenges/ expansion and development (i.e. emerging markets) • Perceptions of use and imagining use beyond current capabilities (i.e. mobile fantasies, mobile art, mobile personalities, mobile witnessing/activism) The preconference will be comprised of formal panel presentations, opportunities for informal discussions, and time for networking. In addition there may be invited performances of innovative artists whose work focuses on mobile communication as it relates to the themes of this preconference. Call for papers: AEJMC 2011 - Visual Communication Division

Dear Colleagues (with apologies for cross-posting): The Visual Communication Division of AEJMC invites faculty and students to submit competitive papers devoted to theoretically based studies of visual communications and to issues concerning the professional practice of visual media production for presentation at the association's annual convention. Visual is broadly defined and includes photography, film, television, web design, graphic design, illustration, and digital imaging, as well as other visual phenomena. The division encourages submission of papers that address a broad spectrum of methodology and application, both qualitative and quantitative, on all types of visual media-advertising, broadcast, digital imaging, film, graphic design, multimedia and web design, photojournalism, propaganda images, visual images and culture, visual literacy, and visual aspects of political campaigns, etc. Research in media history, law, policy, effects, processes, uses and ethics regarding visuals are also welcome. All submissions will be blind refereed by a panel of independent readers. Student papers compete on equal footing with faculty papers. A $100 award will be given to the top student contribution. The top three faculty papers will be recognized in the AEJMC annual convention program. Papers are accepted for peer review on the understanding that they are not already under review for other conventions and that they have been submitted to only one AEJMC group for evaluation. Papers accepted for the AEJMC Convention should not have been presented to another convention or published in scholarly or trade journals prior to presentation at the convention. Authors may submit more than one paper to the Visual Communication Division. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All research papers must be uploaded through AEJMC's ALL ACADEMIC website (paper upload link available January 2011). Make sure to upload through the link marked Visual Communication Division. All papers must be uploaded to the server no later than 11:59 p.m. (Central Standard Time) Thursday, April 1, 2011. All papers must be type-written and double-spaced with one-inch margins. Format should be Microsoft Word or a PDF. The page limit is 30 pages, inclusive of all references, notes, tables, illustrations, and appendices. Manuscripts must conform to the APA reference style. Upload an abstract separately of no more than 75 words. Completely fill out the online submission form with author(s) name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address. The title should be printed on the first page of the text and on running heads on each subsequent page of text. Please make sure not to include author name(s) on title page or running heads and confirm that no identifying information is in the File Properties area of the MS Word file. All authors will be advised whether their paper has been accepted and will receive a copy of the reviewers' comments by May 15, 2011. At least one author of an accepted paper must attend the convention to present the paper. The Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University is seeking to hire in organizational communication for an appointment in at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to publish innovative research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and perform professional service commensurate with rank. We welcome applicants from a range of theoretical and methodological approaches who study either formal or informal organizations, or the process of organizing more broadly. We are particularly interested in scholars who study the communicative aspects of distributed work, social movement processes, innovation, globalization, technological change, virtual worlds, and organizing processes in healthcare and the creative industries. The position includes the opportunity to teach in a professional masters degree program. The Department of Communication Studies supports a popular undergraduate major and graduate programs in Media, Technology, and Society, Interaction and Social Influence, and Rhetoric and Public Culture. Scholarship includes leading work on new media, social networks, and the cultural determination of the public sphere. Through special resources for research support and scholarly event programming, the department is able to offer rich opportunities for scholarly development. School of Communication faculty also can have opportunities during their career at Northwestern to teach and conduct research at the Northwestern University campus in Doha, Qatar. Ed Felten Named FTC Chief Technologist

FTC Names Edward W. Felten as Agency's Chief Technologist; Eileen Harrington as Executive Director http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/11/cted.shtm Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz today announced the appointment of Edward W. Felten as the agency’s first Chief Technologist. In his new position, Dr. Felten will advise the agency on evolving technology and policy issues. Dr. Felten is a professor of computer science and public affairs and founding director of the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University. He has served as a consultant to federal agencies, including the FTC, and departments of Justice and Defense, and has testified before Congress on a range of technology, computer security, and privacy issues. He is a fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery and recipient of the Scientific American 50 Award. Felten holds a Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the University of Washington. Dr. Felten’s research has focused on areas including computer security and privacy, especially relating to consumer products; technology law and policy; Internet software; intellectual property policy; and using technology to improve government. “Ed is extraordinarily respected in the technology community, and his background and knowledge make him an outstanding choice to serve as the agency’s first Chief Technologist,” Leibowitz said. “He’s going to add unparalleled expertise on high-technology markets and computer security. And he also will provide invaluable input into the recommendations we’ll be making soon for online privacy, as well as the enforcement actions we’ll soon bring to protect consumer privacy. We’re thrilled to have him on board.” Dr. Felten currently is a part-time consultant for the FTC. He will start full time as Chief Technologist in January. Chairman Leibowitz also announced that Eileen Harrington has been named the agency’s Executive Director. Harrington comes to the FTC from a 15-month stint as Chief Operating Officer at the U.S. Small Business Administration. Previously, she served for 25 years at the FTC, starting as a staff attorney and assuming a variety of senior management positions in the Bureau of Consumer Protection, including Associate Director for Marketing Practices, Deputy Director, and Acting Director. Harrington has a long list of accomplishments from her tenure at the FTC. Perhaps most notably, she received the prestigious Service to America Medal for leading the team that created the National Do Not Call Registry. “This is a very happy homecoming,” said Leibowitz. “Eileen has made an invaluable contribution to the FTC in the past, and her strong management skills, enthusiasm, and creativity will once again be put to use for the betterment of the agency and for American consumers. We are delighted to have her back.” The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them.
