FW: [MEA] WkiLeaks - Technology now advances crabwise
by Alex Kuskis 06 Dec '10

06 Dec '10

Forwarded from the media ecology list, further to the WikiLeaks discussion: some interesting speculations from Umberto Eco. Recall as well the William Gibson short story "Johnny Mnemonic (text available here http://project.cyberpunk.ru/lib/johnny_mnemonic/ ) in which couriers must carry sensitive data in brain implants between contracting parties, because regular computer networks are not secure. This dystopian view no longer seems far-fetched, if it ever was.....Alex Kuskis Umberto Eco on Wikileaks. Enjoy! http://www.presseurop.eu/en/content/article/414871-not-such-wicked-leaks Technology now advances crabwise What will be the consequences of this wound inflicted on a very mighty power? It's obvious that in future, states won't be able to put any restricted information on line anymore: that would be tantamount to posting it on a street corner. But it is equally clear that, given today's technologies, it is pointless to hope to have confidential dealings over the phone. Nothing is easier than finding out whether a head of state flew in or out or contacted one of his counterparts. So how can privy matters be conducted in future? Now I know that for the time being, my forecast is still science fiction and therefore fantastic, but I can't help imagining state agents riding discreetly in stagecoaches along untrackable routes, bearing only memorised messages or, at most, the occasional document concealed in the heel of a shoe. Only a single copy thereof will be kept - in locked drawers. Ultimately, the attempted Watergate break-in was less successful than WikiLeaks. I once had occasion to observe that technology now advances crabwise, i.e. backwards. A century after the wireless telegraph revolutionised communications, the Internet has re-established a telegraph that runs on (telephone) wires. (Analog) video cassettes enabled film buffs to peruse a movie frame by frame, by fast-forwarding and rewinding to lay bare all the secrets of the editing process, but (digital) CDs now only allow us quantum leaps from one chapter to another. High-speed trains take us from Rome to Milan in three hours, but flying there, if you include transfers to and from the airports, takes three and a half hours. So it wouldn't be extraordinary if politics and communications technologies were to revert to the horse-drawn carriage. One last observation: In days of yore, the press would try to figure out what was hatching sub rosa inside the embassies. Nowadays, it's the embassies that are asking the press for the inside story.

CFP: Transnational HCI - a workshop at CHI 2011
by Irina Shklovski 05 Dec '10

05 Dec '10

CFP: TRANSNATIONAL HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions in Transnational Context A workshop at CHI 2011 May 8, 2011, Vancouver BC, Canada Recent studies in Human-Computer Interaction have turned to examining computing in non-Western contexts, increasingly recognizing that technologies and activities of their participants are not bounded by single geographies, cultures, or borders. In our interactions with everyday technologies, we are increasingly tied to people and machines in other countries, cultures and networks. Such activities require us to consider technologies not just in national, but also in a transnational context. That is, humans, computers and interactions not limited to single countries or cultures, but forming communities across spaces, managing boundary-crossings, and forming hybrid practices. This workshop will bring together researchers and designers across academia and industry to address the effects, implications, and design opportunities for individuals and communities who engage in transnational technological practices. We seek participants to explore the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in transnational settings for our workshop, TRANSNATIONAL HCI, at CHI 2011. We aim to assemble an interdisciplinary group of practitioners to expand current work on ICTs in global processes, to develop a language and toolset for the study of technologies in transnational spaces, and to address the role of ICTs for local-global user interaction, collaboration across boundaries and negotiations of power relations. Examples of possible paper topics include, but are not limited to: * The use of pervasive technologies such as multiplayer gaming across borders * Studies of social networking among Diaspora communities * Use of ICTs in censorship state zones * The role of ICTs in reconfiguring "the local" * Technology in the context of international migration and politics * Cross-cultural collaboration Submissions that develop theoretical approaches, report on empirical work or on technology design are welcome, and need not be limited to "developing world" sites. Full papers may later be solicited for a potential special issue. We welcome applications from researchers, designers, practitioners and scholars across the subdomains of human-computer interaction and beyond, in the fields of anthropology, sociology, science and technology studies, critical theory, communication, media studies and cultural geography. Interested participants should submit a 2-4 page paper in CHI Archival Format <http://chi2011.org/authors/format.html> by January 14, 2011 to transnationaltimes(a)gmail.com <mailto:transnationaltimes@gmail.com> describing your current project and its contribution to the workshop topic. At least one author for each accepted paper must register for the workshop and should attend at least one full day of CHI <www.chi2011.org <http://www.chi2011.org/>>. Additional information, including the workshop description (Extended Abstract), is available on our website at http://www.princeton.edu/~jvertesi/TransnationalHCI/ IMPORTANT DATES * Submission deadline - Jan 14, 2011 * Notification of acceptance - Feb 11, 2011 * Workshop at CHI2011 - May 8, 2011 ORGANIZERS Janet Vertesi, Princeton University, USA Silvia Lindtner, University of California, Irvine, USA Irina Shklovski, IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark If you have any questions please contact the organizers at transnationaltimes(a)gmail.com. Fwd: Annual IAS-STS Conference 2011
by Florence Chee 05 Dec '10

05 Dec '10

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "Günter Getzinger" <getzinger(a)ifz.tugraz.at> To: getzinger(a)ifz.tugraz.at Sent: Saturday, December 4, 2010 10:47:27 AM Subject: Annual IAS-STS Conference 2011 1 0th IAS-STS Annual Conference " Critical Issues in Science and Technology Studies" May 2-3, 2011 Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS) GRAZ - AUSTRIA The IAS-STS in Graz, Austria, promotes the interdisciplinary investigation of the links and interactions between science, technology and society, technology assessment, as well as research on the development and implementation of socially and environmentally sound technologies. Therefore, IAS-STS hosts international fellows and research associates through its fellowship programme. Additionally, the institute organizes an annual conference on "Critical Issues in Science and Technology Studies". CONFERENCE THEMES ** Gender - Technology - Environment ** -- Special session 1: “Issues of Inclusion and Exclusion in Web 2.0” For this part of the conference, contributions on the topic “Issues of Inclusion and Exclusion in Web 2.0” are looked for. Web 2.0 is considered as user-centred and democratic: Everybody is said to be able to participate and it seems that nearly everybody does. However, this is not the case of course. The Internet with all its interactive applications is not as colourful as it could be, it does not represent the ‘real’ world and it is definitely not democratic per se. In this session we want to discuss - boundaries and possibilities, - theoretical inputs and empirical research, - gender, queer and intersectionality issues of the current Internet. Besides a critique on the current Web 2.0, we will discuss utopias as well – how can the Internet be further democratized? -- Workshop: “ The Concept of ‘Heteronormativity’ and its Methodological Implications” Conference participants interested in joining th is workshop please contact Birgit Hofstätter ( hofstaetter(a)ifz.tugraz.at ) by March 31, 2011 ** Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Human Genetics and Agricultural Biotechnology ** A main focus of the conference will lie on research projects providing a critical analysis of human genetic research or of agricultural biotechnology. Researchers investigating either ethical, legal and social aspects of genetic testing in the medical domain or risk policy and wider governance issues related to agricultural biotechnology are especially encouraged to contribute. ** Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) ** SCP seeks to promote social and economic development within the carrying capacity of ecosystems. New strategies and concrete tools are needed to change individual and institutional patterns of consumption and to enhance corporate responsibility (CR) of organisations. Researchers investigating patterns of consumption and intervention strategies to promote sustainable lifestyles among both public and private consumers or working within the thematic field of ecological product policy are encouraged to give a presentation. Research projects integrating product assessment tools such as LCA, carbon footprint, MIPS or related methods are also of special interest. -- Special Session 2: Trans-disciplinarity in sustainability studies We invite presentations dealing with concepts, models and experiences of trans-disciplinary research (TDR) in the context of ecological and social sustainability. We are interested in reflecting the possibilities and limits of this type of research. The trans-disciplinarity panel will be organized along specific sessions, and we are looking forward to experience based or conceptual papers with a focus on one of the following issues: 1. Integrated knowledge production: An important aspect of TDR refers to topics of the production of new and integrated knowledge. We shall discuss questions about the ways in which different kinds of knowledge - represented by the different actors participating - are both being treated and integrated in the research process. - How do TDR actors work together to develop mutual learning, new understandings and to produce new and integrated knowledge? - How does social learning relate to knowledge integration? 2. (policy) Intervention: Interventions resulting from trans-disciplinary research activities may proof the specific relevance of this specific type of research. We would like to reflect on the potential for interventions based on empirical papers, which describe interventions that have been taking place in the context of carrying out TDR, and under what circumstances that happened. - Which kinds of interventions take place in TDR? - How can TDR be designed in order to allow for interventions? 3. Societal relevance of trans-disciplinary research: TDR is considered being a useful tool for solving complex ‘real world’ problems. The added value of this mode of research is often ascribed to its societal relevance and a high potential for societal impact. In this session we want to discuss the societal relevance on the basis of concrete cases. - How do specific cases illuminate the societal relevance of TDR-activities? - Which methodological tools can be applied to assess the societal relevance of TDR? The sessions will be affiliated to the final conference of the project “Sustainable behavior at work and in private life” organized in parallel to the IAS-STS conference. -- ‘Sustainable behavior at work and in private life’ – final conference The first part of the conference deals with the specific characteristics and quality criteria of trans-disciplinary research projects. The experiences gained in the project ‘Sustainable behavior at work and in private life’ are contrasted with contributions of other researchers in the field of sustainability. The second part of the conference is limited to the German speaking audience and will be organized as a half-day workshop. The main inputs and conclusions will be summarized and fed back to the IAS-STS conference. ** Energy and Climate ** Presentations in this field should develop appropriate measures and strategies for the promotion of renewable energy sources and for the transition to a sustainable energy system. Regional governance, climate policy strategies, innovation policy, technology assessment, and the role of users in the area of energy technologies should play an important role. -- Special Session 3: “How do you manage? Unravelling the situated practice of environmental management” People manage their environments, all of us in everyday life, and some more specifically as professionals. Many of the decisions we take and activities we practice, in everyday life as well as in professional roles, have consequences on our environments. In order to explore more sustainable ways of living in this world, however, we need to better understand these various forms of environmental management. This session will discuss environmental management as a practice, as a situated unfolding of social relationships, desires, routines, and materials. Thereby, we aim to gain insight into some of the processes by which sustainability and unsustainability are being produced. Contributions to this session may address, but need not be limited, to the following questions: How do people “manage” their environments in everyday life? How do those who are explicitly considered environmental managers understand their mission, opportunities and limitations? How do particular forms of knowledge, organizations and implementation instruments structure the engagement of the “manager” and her subject matter? And how does this subject matter itself figure as an active participant in the process? The session is organised by IFZ in cooperation with the Environment, Management and Society research group ( http://www.ems-research.org ). ** Information and Communication Technologies ** The fifth focus of the conference will be put on novel developments based on ICT from an STS perspective. Topics like ICT and agency, ubiquitous computing or ICT and mobility shall be analysed with respect to their wider social and political implications. Further issues of interest are the social shaping of ICT developments, innovation policies, risk management and participatory approaches to the design of ICT systems and applications. ORGANIZATIONAL DETAILS *Participants* The 10th IAS-STS conference invites all current and former fellows of the Institute for Advanced Studies as well as other interested researchers in the area of science and technology studies. Wikileaks
by Alex Kuskis 04 Dec '10

04 Dec '10

As with many aspects of our culture, especially media-related ones, Marshall McLuhan had some notable things to say that are relevant to the Wikileaks controversy: "Position papers are secret or confidential documents for the attention of committees, and any office boy can publish these, no matter how top secret they may be. The Pentagon Papers were position papers which may or may not have been studied or discussed by a Congressional committee. They are "the news behind the news", which used to be considered muckraking but has now become an ordinary dimension of journalism, such as nourishes the underground press and which, in turn, affects the forms and publics of the regular press." CfP: CHI 2011 Workshop Privacy for a Networked World: Bridging Theory and Design
by Fred Stutzman 03 Dec '10

03 Dec '10

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION CHI 2011 workshop: ”Privacy for a Networked World”: Bridging Theory and Design http://networkedprivacy.wordpress.com/ As our lives are more commonly mediated by information technology, an interactional perspective to how people find and construct privacy in socio-technical interactions has proven effective as a starting point for theoretical and empirical studies of privacy in everyday life in which online interactions have a significant role. Yet, there remain important open questions regarding how to translate results based on this perspective into design practice. Addressing these questions requires a greater sensitivity to when interactional privacy is applicable, a better understanding of suitable research methods, and more effective means for communicating results to the researcher and practitioner communities. The goal of this workshop is to bring privacy theory and design together. We seek participants from various domains for a multidisciplinary workshop to share their knowledge and views of both the theory and design of interactional privacy. Position papers are invited on the following topics: (1) Theoretical and empirical study of interactional privacy. (2) Ways of designing for interactional privacy. Submitted position papers will be peer-reviewed by a workshop committee. The organizers will disseminate the results at the CHI conference and plan to submit a proposal for a special issue in a relevant journal in response to an open Call for Papers. Interested parties should submit a position paper of 2-4 pages, in the CHI Extended Abstracts format, to the EasyChair submission central at http://tinyurl.com/networkedprivacy by Jan 14, 2011. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop and for one or more days of the CHI 2011 conference. IMPORTANT DATES * Submission deadline - Jan 14, 2011 * Notification of acceptance - Feb 11, 2011 * Workshop at CHI2011 - May 7, 2011 ORGANIZERS Airi Lampinen, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, Finland Fred Stutzman, School of Information and Library Science, UNC-Chapel Hill, USA Markus Bylund, Swedish Institute of Computer Science, Sweden If you have any questions or would like to learn about this workshop, please contact the organizers at networkedprivacy[at]gmail.com. Teaching about multiplatform communication
by CarrieLynn D. Reinhard 03 Dec '10

03 Dec '10

I'm thinking about creating a course on multiplatform communicating, or the rhetoric of the interface. The goal would be to help students understand how the way you engage with the media technology impacts your understanding of the information being communicated, and what it says about who the intended users are. The idea would be for them to develop multiplatform communication projects, so understanding the role of the interface in content creation and dissemination. So it could draw in literature from various fields: psychology of perception, film studies, HCI, social informatics, etc. If anyone has any ideas for good literature, then I would be glad to hear it.
