Call for Workshops: Fifth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-11)
by John Breslin 30 Nov '10

30 Nov '10

== Call for Workshop Proposals == = Workshops at the Fifth AAAI International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media = == July 17-21, 2011 in Barcelona, Spain == === Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence === == Important Dates for Workshop Organizers == * January 7, 2011: Workshop Proposal Submission * January 18, 2011: Workshop Acceptance * March 22, 2011: Workshop Paper Submission * April 8, 2011: Workshop Paper Acceptance Notification * July 21, 2011: ICWSM-11 Workshops Day The ICWSM-11 Committee invites proposals for Workshops Day at the Fifth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-11). The Workshops Day will be held at the end of the conference on July 21, 2011 in Barcelona, Spain. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus - providing an informal setting for active exchange among researchers, developers and users on topics of current interest. ICWSM-11 is being co-located with IJCAI-11, and we plan to have a special conference rate for IJCAI registrants. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with 25-50 participants. Attendance is limited to active participants only. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers, who are encouraged to avoid a mini-conference format that is dominated by long talks and short discussions. Instead, the organizers should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants, and should encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas. Workshops will typically be a half-day in length, although full-day proposals will be considered. == Proposal Content == Proposals for workshops should be about two (2) pages in length, and should contain the following: * A description of the workshop topic. Identify the specific issues and research questions on which the workshop will focus. * A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at this time. * A list of related workshops held previously at related conferences and a brief statement on how the proposed workshop differs from the previous workshops or how it follows-up on the work presented at previous workshops. * A brief description of the proposed workshop format, regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussion. * An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting. * The names and full contact information (email and postal addresses, fax and phone numbers) of the organizing committee - three or four people knowledgeable in the field - and short descriptions of their relevant expertise. (Please specify main contact.) Strong proposals include organizers who bring differing perspectives to the workshop topic and who are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. * A list of potential attendees. Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, for bridging the gaps between the social science and technology fields or between subfields of social media research, for elucidating the results of exploratory research, or for critiquing existing approaches. Because workshops are intended for focused exploration of special topics, topics that are already the subject of regular meetings are not appropriate. == Workshop Organization == Workshop organizers will be responsible for the following: * Producing a call for submissions/participation. The call for papers is due January 25, 2011; due to the short turnaround time, you should create a draft in tandem with your proposal. This call will be posted on the ICWSM-11 site within 3-4 days. Organizers are responsible for additional publicity such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the ICWSM community. Organizers are encouraged to maintain their own web site with updated information about the workshop. * Selecting participants. Workshop attendance is by invitation of the organizers. Selection of attendees will be made by the organizers on the basis of submissions due March 22, 2011. Workshop organizers will need to provide ICWSM-11 with a preliminary list of the participants on April 8, 2011. * Coordinating the production of the workshop papers and abstracts. AAAI coordinates the collection, production, and distribution of the technical reports or working notes for the workshops. Workshop papers and abstracts must be received by AAAI no later than April 22, 2011, and volumes are limited to a total of 200 pages. Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through the AAAI Press. The Press (which retains the right of first refusal to publish) will furnish details of its program to interested organizers and authors. ICWSM will provide logistical support, and meeting places for the workshops, and will determine the dates and times of the workshops. ICWSM reserves the right to drop any workshop if the organizers miss the above deadlines. Workshops are not to be used as a vehicle for marketing products. A reduced workshop registration fee will be offered to ICWSM-11 technical program registrants. == Submission Deadline == Proposals must be received by January 7, 2011. Decisions about the Workshops Day program will be made by January 18, 2011. Call for Tutorials: Fifth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-11)
by John Breslin 30 Nov '10

30 Nov '10

== Call for Tutorial Proposals == = Tutorials at Fifth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media = == July 17-21, 2011 in Barcelona, Spain == === Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence === == Important Dates for Tutorial Organizers == * February 18, 2011: Tutorial Proposal Submission * March 4, 2011: Tutorial Acceptance * July 17, 2011: ICWSM-11 Tutorials Day The ICWSM-11 Committee invites proposals for Tutorials Day at the Fifth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-11). The Tutorials Day will be held on July 17, 2011 in Barcelona, Spain. Anyone interested in presenting a tutorial at ICWSM-11 should submit a proposal to the 2011 Tutorials Chair (via EasyChair). ICWSM-11 is being co-located with IJCAI-11, and we plan to have a special conference rate for IJCAI registrants. == What Is the Tutorials Day? == The Tutorials Day provides an opportunity for junior and senior researchers to spend a day before ICWSM freely exploring exciting advances in disciplines outside their normal focus. We believe this type of forum is essential for the cross-fertilization, cohesiveness, and vitality of the social media field. We all have a lot to learn from each other; the Tutorials Day promotes the continuing education of each member in our community. == Topics == ICWSM is interested in proposals for advanced tutorials at the leading edge of social media in all its incarnations, including but not limited to: NLP, Social Psychology, Data Mining, Sociology and Visualization. We are particularly interested in tutorials that offer two types of knowledge. The first type provides in-depth background tools to help educate researchers and students for the purpose of conducting social media research; examples of this type of tutorial from ICWSM-10 include "Introduction to Social Media Network Analysis" and "Large-Scale Social Media Analytics with Hadoop". A second type of tutorial provides a broad overview for a social media area that potentially crosses boundaries with an interesting application area; examples of this type of tutorial from ICWSM-10 include "The Social Semantic Web: How Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web Can Strengthen Each Other" and "The Social Psychology of Social Media through the Lens of Text Analysis". Our goal is to present a diverse program that includes tutorials on core areas of social media research for new or non-technical audiences, and tutorials from allied non-computing disciplines that can inform research within social media. Previous years' tutorial programs provide an indication of the scope and variety of possible topics. The list is not exclusive; indeed, we are expressly interested in topics that we would not have imagined to mention. Finally, note that we very much welcome proposals for educational approaches that go beyond the traditional format of four-hour tutorials, exploiting the flexibility that the open format program offers. == Submission Requirements == We need two kinds of information in the proposals: information that will be used for selecting proposals and information that will appear in the tutorial description brochure. The proposal should provide sufficient information to evaluate the quality of the technical content being taught, the quality of the educational material being used, and the speakers' skill at presenting this material. Each proposal should include at least the following: * Goal of the tutorial: Who is the target audience? What will the audience walk away with? What makes the topic innovative? * History: List of previous venues and approximate audience sizes, if the same or a similar tutorial has been given elsewhere; otherwise an estimate of the audience size. * Content: Detailed outline and list of additional materials, augmented with samples, such as past tutorial slides and survey articles, whenever possible. Be as complete as possible. * Tutorial description: 1-2 paragraphs summarizing the tutorial outline (suitable for promotion on the ICWSM-11 website), and the intended duration of the session (the default is four hours). * Prerequisite knowledge: What knowledge is assumed of the target audience? Please also submit the following information about the team of presenters: name, mailing address, phone number, email address; background in the tutorial area, including a list of relevant publications and/or presentations; any available examples of work in the area (ideally, a published tutorial-level article or presentation materials on the subject); evidence of teaching experience (courses taught or references); and evidence of scholarship in computer science or social science. == Submission Deadline == Proposals must be received by February 18, 2011. Decisions about the Tutorials Day program will be made by March 4, 2011. Submissions must be in PDF format and can be made via the EasyChair conference system at: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icwsm2011tutorials http://bit.ly/icwsm-t == Tutorials Chair == John Breslin College of Engineering and Informatics / DERI NUI Galway, University Road, Galway, Ireland +353 91 492622 john.breslin(a)nuigalway.ie @johnbreslin == Conference Information == http://www.icwsm.org/ icwsm11(a)aaai.org @icwsm

30 Nov '10

Apologies for cross-posting. =========================================== Call For Participation CHI 2011 Workshop Gamification: Using Game Design Elements in Non-Gaming Contexts http://bit.ly/grn-chi2011 =========================================== "Gamification" is an informal umbrella term for the use of video game elements in non-game systems to improve user experience (UX) and user engagement. The recent introduction of ‘gamified’ applications such as Foursquare to large end-user audiences promises new lines of inquiry and rich data sources for the many endeavors in human-computer interaction (HCI) that have explored game-related heuristics, design patterns and dynamics of motivating, positive user experiences – endeavors as various as persuasive technology, funology, incentive centered design, the social psychology of online communities, motivational affordances, or game UX. The goal of this one-day workshop at CHI 2011 is to bring together HCI researchers and practitioners from these diverse fields to take the next step forward by building a shared picture of the current state of approaches and findings pertinent to gamification, and to identify synergies, key opportunities and questions for future research. ===Submission details=== We invite researchers from all theoretical and methodological backgrounds to submit a 2-4 page position paper in the CHI extended abstracts format on ongoing empirical work, (potentially summative) accounts of existing approaches and findings, or work that might otherwise elucidate the user experience, psychology, social dynamics and design of information systems employing game elements via e-mail to chi2011 (at) gamification-research.org. Note that at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the workshop and for one or more days of the conference. ===Organizing Committee=== * Sebastian Deterding, Hamburg University, Germany * Dan Dixon, University of the West of England, UK * Lennart Nacke, University of Saskatchewan, Canada * Kenton O’Hara, Microsoft Research Cambridge, USA * Miguel Sicart, IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark ===Schedule=== * Submission deadline: January 14, 2011 * Notification of acceptance: February 11, 2011 * Workshop: May 7 or 8, 2011 (final date to follow) ===Links=== * CFP: http://bit.ly/grn-chi2011 * Further information: http://gamification-research.org/chi2011 * Updates: http://twitter.com/gamifyresearch -- Cheers, Sebastian ------------------------------------------------------------ Sebastian Deterding | coding conduct Mail: sebastian(a)codingconduct.cc | Twitter: dingstweets Web: http://codingconduct.cc | Skype: sebastiandeterding ------------------------------------------------------------ This email is [X] assumed public and may be forwarded, blogged, etc. [_] assumed to be private. CFP: Rethinking the Culture of Busyness and IT: NSF-sponsored symposium
by Gilly Leshed 30 Nov '10

30 Nov '10

---------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- “Slow Down, You Move Too Fast”: Rethinking the Culture of Busyness and IT NSF-Sponsored Symposium Seattle, WA May 6-7, 2011 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We live in a culture of busyness: in developed countries, many of us feel rushed, overloaded and overworked, yet we value the idea of doing more in less time. In this culture, information technologies (IT) are intended to free us from hard labor and save us time: e-mail is sent immediately, e-shopping saves us from trudging through malls, status updates and microblogging give us quick glimpses into friends’ lives, and smartphones make it all instantly accessible on the go. At the same time, our use of IT may affect experiences of time in other ways: facilitating fragmentation and micro-coordination of work, inadvertently or insidiously redistributing labor and responsibility, making accessible an overabundance of information, products and services among which we feel obligated to choose properly, and increasing our availability to anyone, anytime and anywhere. What role does technology actually play in promoting a culture of busyness? Can technology be designed purposely against a cultural mainstream of productivity, encouraging slowing down, reflection, and pause? To what extent could such technology be relevant to task-centric workplaces or busy homes with multiple family members coordinating their activities? The goal of this NSF-funded symposium is to foster an interdisciplinary research community that draws from the social sciences, science& technology studies, organization and management science, and technology design to address the following questions: (1) What are the roles of IT in coping with and/or promoting a culture of busyness? We aim to identify theoretical and empirical gaps in understanding sociotechnical aspects of busyness at the individual, organizational, and societal level. (2) To what extent is it possible to intervene in the culture of busyness by altering the design of IT or its use practices? We will identify both technical and social opportunities and challenges in the design and application of IT interventions for this purpose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PARTICIPATION We invite researchers, designers, and practitioners interested in addressing the relationship between technology and the intensification of life in the workplace, at home, and elsewhere. Sample topics include but are not limited to: - Interruption management and the increasing demand on cognitive resources - Information overload in web, internet, and communication technologies, including social media and social networking sites: causes, experiences, coping strategies, and social and cultural responses - Rhetoric and costs of anytime, anywhere access and availability with mobile and awareness technologies - Sociological analysis of uses of technologies for time management, activity and task management, and personal information management - Technology saving whose time, at whose expense and other political questions - Analysis of ties between technologies in domestic environments and the acceleration of home life and leisure - Designing for slowness, reflection, and pause - Analysis of ways technology design redistributes workload either surreptitiously, intentionally, or accidentally, fairly or unfairly, sometimes in the name of “efficiency” - Design and use of technology in cultures embracing other values of time and work - Possibilities for and limitations of interventions based on technology design or changing use practices in any of these topics To participate, please submit a position paper that briefly addresses each of the following questions: 1. What work have you done in this area? How is it related to the theme of this symposium? 2. Identify one or two key issues, challenges, or opportunities you are interested in discussing in this symposium. Why are they important? How do you envision making progress in addressing them? 3. What one piece of research or writing have you found most inspirational for your work in the area? Submissions should be 2-4 pages, using the ACM paper format available at:http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Please send your submission or questions about the symposium to gl87(a)cornell.edu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KEY DATES February 1, 2011: Deadline for position papers March 1, 2011: Notification of acceptance May 6-7, 2011: Symposium ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCATION AND TRAVEL The symposium will take place near the University of Washington campus, Seattle, WA. Travel funding and accommodation at the Waterfront Hotel in Seattle will be offered to one person for each accepted symposium submission. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Gilly Leshed, Department of Communication, Cornell University Phoebe Sengers, Information Science and Science& Technology Studies, Cornell University Helen Nissenbaum, Media, Culture, and Communication& Computer Science, New York University STEERING COMMITTEE Batya Friedman, Information School, University of Washington Carman Neustaedter, School of Interactive Arts + Technology, Simon Fraser University ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsored by NSF, grant number IIS-1049359: Workshop: Rethinking the Value of Busyness in IT

JITP2011: The Future of Computational Social Science
by David Berry 29 Nov '10

29 Nov '10

JITP2011: The Future of Computational Social Science CALL FOR PAPERS May 16 & 17, 2011 at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA The 3rd annual, two-day Journal of Information Technology & Politics (JITP) thematic conference will be in Seattle, Washington, coordinated by the Department of Political Science and the Center for American Politics and Public Policy (CAPPP) at the University of Washington. APPROACH Computational social science is an emergent field and source of new theoretical and methodological innovation for social science more broadly. Multidisciplinary teams of social and computer scientists are increasingly common in the lab and at workshops where cross- fertilization occurs in the areas of theory, data, methods, and tools. Peer-reviewed interdisciplinary work is becoming more common as the computational tools and techniques of computer science are being used by social scientists. Previously, large-scale computational processing was the purview of expensive, university-centric computing labs. Now, with the democratization of technology, universities and for-profit firms increasingly provide large amounts of inexpensive computing power to researchers and citizens alike. It is the potential of these new computational technologies and related Web-based platforms for research, politics, and governance that led to the creation of the Journal of Information Technology & Politics. Previous special issues on "Text Annotation for Political Science" 5(1), "Politics: Web 2.0" 6(3/4), "YouTube and the 2008 Election Cycle in the United States" 7(2/3), and "The Politics of Open Source" (in production) have focused the attention of researchers on the expansive new landscape of digital democracy as well as the architecture and tools that underpin it. In their 2009 Science article, David Lazer and colleagues highlighted some of the future challenges for scholars working in this area. "Computational social science could become the exclusive domain of private companies and government agencies. Alternatively, there might emerge a privileged set of academic researchers presiding over private data from which they produce papers that cannot be critiqued or replicated. Neither scenario will serve the long-term public interest of accumulating, verifying, and disseminating knowledge." Luckily, the phenomenon of computational social science is distributed so widely and found in such variety that these scenarios are unlikely. The trends towards openness and data and tool sharing are notable breakthroughs in a sphere where proprietary approaches dominate. Data, method, and tool transparency are increasingly watchwords for governments and researchers. With this background in mind, we invite a wide range of paper submissions on the future of computational social science. Submissions may include, but are not limited to: • Applications of information theory to social science research • Methodologies and tools for studying users and information on social media services • Projects featuring novel uses of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software • Large-scale empirical analysis and modeling • Web technologies and data mining • Interdisciplinary methodologies in collaborative research • Pedagogical issues in computational social science • Computer simulations in political science education and training • Concepts from social sciences enhanced by computation, such as social network analysis • Innovation in socio-technical network and infrastructure analysis PAPER SUBMISSIONS Authors are invited to prepare and submit to JITP a research paper, policy viewpoint, workbench note, or teaching innovation manuscript by January 1, 2011. Proposals for full panel presentations will also be accepted. Please contact the conference manager to discuss panels. Papers accepted for publication will be invited to revise and resubmit their articles for publication in a special issue, or double issue, of JITP. Authors should "establish membership" at the JITP website, http://www.jitp.net, to submit a paper. Follow the instructions for regular article submissions, being sure to indicate that the paper is for JITP2011 in the comments section. Papers will be put through an expedited, blind peer review process by the Program Committee, and authors will be notified about a decision by March 1, 2011. A small number of papers will be accepted for presentation at the conference. Other paper authors will be invited to present a poster during an evening reception. BEST PAPER AND POSTER CASH PRIZES The author (or authors) of the best research paper will receive a cash prize. The creator (or creators) of the best poster/research presentation will also receive a cash prize. Special Issue: Social Media in Higher Education
by Stefan Hrastinski 28 Nov '10

28 Nov '10

CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue: Social Media in Higher Education in The Internet and Higher Education The social media hype has created a lot of speculation among educators on how these media can be used to support learning. In this special issue, we would like to explore how social media can be taken advantage of in higher education to support informal and formal learning. It is well agreed upon that most learning takes place outside school in our everyday lives. On campuses, there are common spaces such as hallways, lounges, libraries, and cafés, which support informal learning better than classrooms or lecture-halls. Social media have potential to support learning in both informal and formal settings, as well as creating an entirely new setting in which learning may take place. We can learn a lot from how students are already using such media to support learning in each of these areas. Although most would agree that emerging social media support learning in new ways, we still know little about how students currently use social media to support learning. Prensky put forth the dichotomy of “digital natives” and “digital immigrants” when arguing that technology has dramatically changed the way students of higher education live and learn. Similar arguments have labeled today’s students the net generation, millenials, homo zappiens, generation M and generation Y – labels intended to differentiate their relationship to and use of technology from that of previous generations of learners. However, a growing body of literature questions whether there is really a sharp and fundamental break between today’s young people and previous generations in terms of their adeptness with technology and how they learn. Although we see today’s youth using many social media tools, some tools are more frequently used by older people. Similarly, some are readily adopted by students for personal use, whereas other social media tools have been relegated to as-required or as-assigned use and have been met with resistance. Thus, there are many perceptions of the role social media plays in education, some of which are myths and other are realities. We believe it is time to go beyond the simple dichotomies of the digital natives debate in order to understand how emerging social media can support students’ informal and formal learning. We need to move forward from saying that “students learn in new ways” towards conducting rigorous research that can help us understand the role of social media in higher education. In this issue, we seek articles that present the outcome of rigorous studies of social media use in higher education as well as articles that help provide strong theoretical guidance for the directions future research might take. Authors are requested to submit manuscripts to The Internet and Higher Education via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) no later than March 15, 2011. Dear list-members, We are happy to announce the release of the special issue of "Online - Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet" on "Aesthetics and the Dimension of the Senses"! (Please see: http://www.online.uni-hd.de/.) When we look on the various representations of religious groups and individuals on personal homepages, in weblogs, in virtual worlds or the like and when we follow their communications on religious topics online, the visual and auditive aspects of the medium seem to play a major role. Using pictures, videos, icons, as well as music and other sounds, the internet users can design a multisensual virtual environment which might implicate its own notion of ‘aesthetics’. As the aesthetic and sensual dimensions of religions and rituals on the internet have long been a neglected area of research, we called upon theoretical and methodical reflection as well as on empiric studies referring to these topics. - And many renowned scholars answered with interesting and inspiring articles with which we hope to contribute and give some impulse to the still ongoing discussion on the different theoretical, methodical and methodological approaches to “aesthetics and the dimension of the senses” in the context of religion and religious practice online. Table of Content: Simone Heidbrink / Nadja Miczek: Introduction to the Special Issue: Religions on the Internet – Aesthetics and the Dimensions of the Senses Louise Connelly: Virtual Buddhism: An Analysis of Aesthetics in Relation to Religious Practice within Second Life Gregory Grieve: Virtually Embodying the Field: Silent Online Meditation, Immersion, and the Cardean Ethnographic Method Tim Hutchings: The Politics of Familiarity: Visual, Liturgical and Organisational Conformity in the Online Church Anna Piela: Challenging Stereotypes: Muslim Women's Photographic Self- Representations on the Internet Paul Teusner: Imaging Religious Identity: Intertextual Play among Postmodern Christian Bloggers Theo Zijderfeld: The Transformation of the Prayer Wall Christopher Helland: (Virtually) been there, (Virtually) done that: Examining the Online Religious Practices of the Hindu Tradition: Introduction.
