Sharqiyya - a new E-journal - Volume 1, No. 1
by Shai Zohar 21 Nov '10

21 Nov '10

Dear Colleague, The Middle East and Islamic Studies Association of Israel (MEISAI) and the Middle East and African History Department at Tel Aviv University are happy to launch a new E-Journal for Middle Eastern Studies, called Sharqiyya. We plan to publish the the E-Journal twice a year; the first issue can already be downloaded from the following link: Edited by graduate students and supervised by faculty, Sharqiyya is a somewhat different kind of publication, featuring 3-4 articles per issue (about 3,000 words each), plus sections on the Internet, cinema, satire, and poetics. In the words of the Editors: Sharqiyya is unique in that it draws on contributions by faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars, who all share a passion for Middle Eastern histories and cultures, and whose work is informed by first-hand knowledge of the region's languages and sources. The Editorial Board invites contributors from around the world and the MENA region to offer us short articles in English for publication in Sharqiyya. All submissions must be sent to the Editors by email at sharqiya(a)post.tau.ac.il. Please feel free to comment or make suggestions in order to improve the journal. Call for Papers: Gender, Sexuality, Information: A Reader
by Becca Dean 21 Nov '10

21 Nov '10

*Call for Papers Gender, Sexuality, Information: A Reader* While information needs and behavior have become a central research concern in library and information studies, the particularities of gender and sexuality have yet to be centered in the field. Bringing queer and feminist theories into conversation with current LIS research, Gender, Sexuality, Information: A Reader addresses this gap, gathering existing research along with new scholarship on the intersection of gender and sexuality and information use. Contributors address a range of concerns, including paradigms of information needs and behavior research, methodological challenges, and current approaches to assessing and meeting LGBTQ and women's information needs. Responding to emergent critiques of positivism and behaviorism in LIS scholarship, this collection also seeks to trouble what we think we mean when we talk about gender and sex, as well as "information" and "behavior," as settled, stable constructs. *Critical and Interdisciplinary Focus* Current work in disciplines as diverse as legal theory, literary criticism, design, anthropology, and technology studies exercise a profound impact on LIS research. At the same time, the somewhat nebulous sub-disciplines within our field, such as information seeking behavior, information structures, archival studies, museology, information retrieval, and information policy, have been connected by researchers in new and innovative ways. LIS scholarship has also sought in recent years to challenge traditional approaches and suggest new directions for research into the purposes, practices, phenomenon, and organization of information. This reader serves as a comprehensive multidisciplinary anthology where different epistemologies and methodologies meet. It offers a timely and reasoned contribution to feminist and queer LIS research and promotes perspectives that can serve the cause of social justice. *Possible topics* Manuscripts can cover a range of topics, both professional and theoretical. The editors strongly encourage submissions concerning the intersection of gender and sexuality with race, ethnicity, religion, and socio-economics. Possible topics include but are not limited to the following: cataloging and classification, assessing user needs, information behavior, alternative social science methods, records management, preservation, documentation, oral history, collection development, curatorship, digital libraries and archives, Internet studies, human-computer interaction, sexual health, sex positive perspectives, activist or oppositional new media, informatics, queer or feminist zines, web design and digital aesthetics, computer coding, digital humanities, censorship and intellectual freedom, information technology policy, children and young adult services, international and comparative LIS issues, grant writing, administration and management, and history of the book and publishing. *Submission Guidelines* The editors encourage practitioners, activists, and both established and emerging scholars to submit manuscripts by September 1, 2011. Manuscripts should rage from 5,000-8,000 words and use the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago University Press, 2010). Manuscripts should be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) to gsireader.submissions(a)gmail.com. *About the editors* Rebecca Dean and Patrick Keilty are PhD candidates in information studies with a concentration in women's studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. *Contact* UCLA Department of Information Studies GSE&IS Building, Box 951520 Los Angeles, CA 90095-1520 Phone: (310) 825-8799 Dean's email: becdean[at]gmail[dot]com Keilty's email: pkeilty[at]gmail[dot]com For more information, please visit http://is.gseis.ucla.edu/events/fliers/gender_reader.pdf. -- REBECCA DEAN PhD Candidate | Department of Information Studies, UCLA | 213.810.6740 | becdean(a)gmail.com

Fw: New LA Opera Requirements for Volunteers (fwd)
by Barry Wellman 21 Nov '10

Talk about the Surveillance State Going to New Extremes. Well, the Ring is Kinda Subversive. This is Not a Hoaz: one of my Oldest and Dearest Friends received this. Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. Clark Professor of Sociology, FRSC NetLab Director Department of Sociology 725 Spadina Avenue, Room 388 University of Toronto Toronto Canada M5S 2J4 twitter:barrywellman http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman fax:+1-416-978-3963 Updating history: http://chass.utoronto.ca/oldnew/cybertimes.php _______________________________________________________________________ From: Kelly Christ To: Kelly Christ Sent: Friday, November 19, 2010 1:38 PM Subject: New LA Opera Requirements for Volunteers Dear Opera League Volunteers, We are so grateful for the efforts and passion that you put forth as you spread your love and knowledge of opera, especially to children and youth. In order to continue this outreach to young people, LA Opera now requires that any volunteer who works with children or youth on behalf of LA Opera or the Opera League gets fingerprinted and TB-tested whether you work with children at schools, in the community or here at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. To this purpose, we are having a fingerprinting vendor come to campus on Monday, November 29th from 9:30-11:30am in Rehearsal Room 2 on the 4th floor of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Even if you have fingerprints on file with another agency, you must be fingerprinted again for our programs. The cost to the volunteer is $71 and you can pay at that time by cash, money orders, cashier checks or business checks payable to Federal Fingerprinting, Inc. They do not accept personal checks or credit cards. At this time, you will need to fill out the attached "Live Scan Form" (copies will be available in the rehearsal room). You will also need to bring a valid government-issued ID. To participate in the fingerprinting service, please RSVP to Kelly Christ in Human Resources by email (kchrist(a)laopera.com) or telephone (213.972.3140) by Wednesday, November 24th at 12 noon. We have also made contact with US Healthworks who will be providing TB skin tests at the cost of $20 to volunteers. To get TB tested you can visit any of their Los Angeles area clinics. You just need to walk-in during that clinic's regular hours and present them with the attached "US Healthworks TB Authorization Form." They will give you the test and require that you visit them again in 3 days time for a reading. The US Healthworks downtown clinic is located at 1313 West 8th Street Suite 100, Los Angeles, CA 90017. They are open from Monday through Friday from 7:00am - 4:00pm and on Saturday from 7:00am - 1:00pm. If necessary, you can reach them at (213) 401-1970. Please note that there may be a clinic closer to your home. To find a clinic near you, you can visit their website at www.ushealthworks.com. Next click, "Find a Medical Center" and select "California" from the drop-down menu. You can then enter your address and click "Search." Now click on the location nearest to you and their address, office hours, contact numbers and more information will be at your fingertips. You may also visit your own doctor for a TB test. Be sure to send written evidence that you tested negative to LA Opera's Human Resources Department (Attn: Kelly Christ, LA Opera, 135 North Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012). If you tested negative within the past six months, you may send that written evidence to LA Opera HR instead. Please note that if you choose not to get fingerprinted or TB tested you can still volunteer for many LA Opera and Opera League activities. However, as of December 1st, 2010, LA Opera and the Opera League will only assign volunteers to make school visits or participate in other activities involving children to those volunteers who have completed these new requirements. You will be eligible for assignments involving children as soon as: a.. You have been fingerprinted by our vendor (and cleared with California's Dept. of Justice and the FBI) b.. AND you have provided LA Opera's HR department with proof of a negative TB test If you are not able to complete these tasks before December 1st, you will be eligible to volunteer in activities involving children just as soon as these tasks are finalized. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Christ in LA Opera Human Resources by email (kchrist(a)laopera.com) or telephone (213.972.3140). Thanks again for giving so much of your time, energy and spirit to young people on behalf of LA Opera! Re: [Air-L] Fw: New LA Opera Requirements for Volunteers (fwd)
by Monica Murero 21 Nov '10

21 Nov '10

Most of our '800 Italian Opera masterpieces are pretty "revolutionary" indeed :-) I think that identifying people lecturing to kids is a correct practice for crime prevention etc. That said, Health-tests and body scan for security purposes, fingerprints vendors etc. are growing "new" businesses these days. I wonder about TB skin test and fingerprints requirements -- these sound even more extreme when one reads them from Europe ! Talking about effectiveness of measures, a positive TB skin scan does not mean anything - most medical doctors are TB+ - only a chest X-ray determine current TB activity. What if a volunteer expert on Opera would have lectured in a virtual environment, accessing kids' profile information ? What measures would be required to lecture to kids in an online Opera class? Social Networking in everyday life
by Greg Wise 19 Nov '10

19 Nov '10

Hi folks, I've got a grad student looking for resources on the ways social network sites like Facebook get integrated into people's everyday practices and routines. She's looked to the usual sources (such as danah boyd's work and online bibliography, PEW studies, etc.) but isn't finding much beyond that. There's tons of stuff about what people do on these sites (identity construction, relationships, etc.), and broader social and cultural implications (community, democracy), but few teasing out the everyday practice. Does that make sense? Any ideas? Cheers, Greg Dr. J. The Fallacy of Facebook's "See Friendship" 'Feature'
by Barry Wellman 19 Nov '10

19 Nov '10

Lisa Selin Davis did a story about this in TIME, Nov 18, 2010": "The Trouble with Facebook's New 'See Friendship' Feature" My key quote: "We all live in segmented, diversified worlds. We might be juggling girlfriends, jobs or different groups of friends. But [Facebook thinks] we're in one integrated community." http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,2032030,00.html#comments In short, despite Facebook's name, they don't really understand the Social Network Revolution.
