Hi! Does anyone know how to specify hierarchization criteria for FB searches? We are dealing with a large number of thematic groups and pages in Facebook and it has been difficult to locate the most popular. Thank you Suely Fragoso, Rebeca Rebs, Clara Ungaretti

Employee Electronic Communications Policy requests
by Matthew Wy. 12 Nov '10

12 Nov '10

Our college is currently drafting an Employee Electronic Communications Policy. As chair of the committee, I'm stuck between the desire of the faculty for academic freedom and the will of the administration. So, are there any other members of AOIR who might be willing to mail me offlist their school's policy to help me with wording and ideas? I would appreciate being able to cite evidence when we bring our policy before the Faculty Senate. Matthew Wysocki Assistant Professor Flagler College She blinded me with Library Science.

Re: [Air-L] query: topics that don't get talked about (enough) in academia?
by Seda Guerses 12 Nov '10

12 Nov '10

i wish we talked more about the inclusion of intercultural skills and working with people who speak the dominant instutional language as a second-language. although most universities today are happy to have international students (or scholars) i find that often the introduction to the institution gets pushed to international students offices and to language courses. in reality, working in an environment where people come from diverse backgrounds requires certain skills that most of the time international students/scholars have to learn themselves. this learning is then usually in the form of assimilation to institutional cutlure rather than one of mutual learning and expansion. if all colleagues were more aware of what it means to come from a different language, communication, academic and cultural background, as well as the bureaurcracy and challenges that entails, e.g., visas, financial challenges, dietary issues, collaboration methods, and learned ways to use those differences to enrich the academic environment, we could enjoy the fruits of international scholar communities even more than we do today. (i hear that some of these problems are also common to academics of working class background, so maybe that would also be something to discuss). best, s. Dear all The Department of Internet Studies, Curtin University is seeking to appoint two new lecturers on fixed-term three-year contracts. These positions are new and are designed to meet the significant increases in student enrolments in recent years; they also will consolidate the recent research success of the department. Report: The State of the Electronic Identity Market
by wainer lusoli 11 Nov '10

11 Nov '10

It is with pleasure that I announce the publication of the report The State of the Electronic Identity Market: technologies, stakeholders, infrastructure, services and policies Drafted collaboratively by European Commission JRC IPTS and Consult Hyperion. http://ipts.jrc.ec.europa.eu/publications/pub.cfm?id=3739 The report * explores the market and the economics of electronic identity, the changing infrastructural landscape, the structure of eID-enables service provisions, and relevant issues of policy. * finds that usability, minimum disclosure and portability, essential features of future systems, are at the margin of the market and cross-country, cross-sector eID systems for business and public service are only in their infancy. * provides evidence of the potential of eID for the Single Digital Market. Clear monitoring and analysis of this market is crucial for policy action on identification and authentication, eSignature and interoperability. Janet Salaff, RIP
by Barry Wellman 11 Nov '10

11 Nov '10

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that our colleague and good friend, Janet Salaff, has passed away today To many this will come as a surprise; others will know that she had been having neurological problems in the past few years. She entered into a coma on Thursday and never woke up. True to form, Janet died happy, having wine and dinner with friends, and planning her next tango trip to Argentina. and among good friends. Janet was known primarily an expert on Asian social networks: China, Singapore, HongKong, and Taiwan. However, she, I and Dima Dimitrova did a nice ethnographic study of teleworkers in a large corporation, and she was an active member of our Cavecat/Telepresence project's building and evaluating collaborative software. Some papers from this are on my website. There will be a memorial service, but we don't know when or where. Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. An idea worth sharing
by Thomas Jones 11 Nov '10

11 Nov '10

Sorry but it isnt about TED :( So I had an epiphany the other month that Ive finally had time to sit down and do something about. I recently had a conversation with a mentor of mine, and as we were discussing my future academic and professional career plans (Internet Law), we began talking about the state of the Internet, where it should go, its evolved/evolving purpose, societies use of the Internet, and so on. That has led me to register CyberCitizenry.org - an initiative to focus on the ethical use of the Internet. It involves not just ethical use from a public citizen point of view (pirating, online bullying, etc), but from a governmental perspective as well (network neutrality, internet architecture, information and telecommunications policy, ISP interference, etc). And perhaps if and when it is successful, even international usage as well - similar to what is covered in "Access Denied" and 'Access Restored". If you are interested in this initiative please contact me. -- Thomas Jones http://www.TheOtherTomJones.com http://twitter.com/OtherTomJones http://www.linkedin.com/in/TheOtherTomJones
