final call for papers: Electronic Journal of Communication special issue: Social media in news discourse
by Donald Matheson 17 Nov '10

17 Nov '10

Dear colleagues, Final call for papers (please note deadline for full papers now extended to 20 December) Electronic Journal of Communication / La Revue Electronique de Communication Special Issue: Social Media in News Discourse As professional media producers pay more attention to social media, from personal blog entries and tweets to Facebook updates and YouTube videos, journalists are faced with numerous decisions. Among these are how to integrate personal and often-relationship-focused media with the public and fact-centred discourse of the news. This special issue of the Electronic Journal of Communication invites contributions exploring the conventions that are emerging around the use of social media by news organisations, and the implications of those conventions for public communication. Contributions will have as their central concern whether or not the encounter with social media is changing aspects of news journalism. Possible questions arising from this concern include: How do the forms of personal expression to be found in social media translate into news discourse? What authority or status as knowers is given in the news to voices from various social media? How are specific kinds of social media typically made use of within news discourse? How are journalisms ethical frameworks applied to these media? to what extent is social media content decontextualised from its online social context when used by journalism? Are social media texts produced within news organisations also used in news texts? Papers should be 5000-7500 words in length and submitted electronically to the guest editor, Donald Matheson, at donald.matheson(a)canterbury.ac.nz. Deadline for completed manuscripts is 20 December 2010. The issue is scheduled for publication in the second half of 2011. Authors are welcome to contact the guest editor to discuss proposed papers or related matters. http://www.cios.org/www/ejc/calls/socmedia_news.htm Regards, Donald -- Dr Donald Matheson Head of Programme Media and Communication School of Social and Political Sciences University of Canterbury | Te Whare Wananga o Waitaha Private Bag 4800 Christchurch 8140 Aotearoa New Zealand tel: +64 3 364 2987 ext 7888 fax: +64 3 364 2007 This email may be confidential and subject to legal privilege, it may not reflect the views of the University of Canterbury, and it is not guaranteed to be virus free. CFP: Participatory knowledge production
by Smiljana Antonijevic 15 Nov '10

15 Nov '10

CALL FOR PAPERS Participatory knowledge production 2.0: Critical views and experiences Workshop organized by Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio, Maastricht, 23 March 2011 In recent years, much attention has been given to the ways in which new applications of digital technologies (sometimes called social networking or Web 2.0 or crowd sourcing) enable more and better participation in the creation and production of knowledge across a variety of domains. This can include areas where citizens and fans have long participated such as politics, entertainment and cultural heritage, as well as those domains where the boundary between expert and amateur is more tightly guarded such as in medicine, science and scholarship. For this one-day workshop, the Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio (see www.virtualknowledgestudio.nl<https://mail-xc-01.iisg.nl/owa/redir.aspx?C=27cf76192fce4338945d7eacdf7d12b…>and follow the link to Maastricht) seeks contributions which critically examine the notion of ‘participatory knowledge production’ in the digital age from a variety of perspectives. Is participation distributed equally across social groups, cultures, countries or world regions? Is there evidence of changing relationships amongst and between experts and amateurs? How do software and hardware combine with social processes to structure participation? What happens to the invisible labour of those occupations such as sound engineers and copy editors? Are new forms of invisible labour emerging? Does the nature of participation or of knowledge change if mediated by (different) digital technologies? Can ‘participation’ better be seen as the new (multi-directional) surveillance? We particularly welcome contributions which combine empirical data with theoretical reflection, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. We also welcome contributions which critically examine the terms of these debates. The organizers will explore ways of publishing some or all of the papers. The workshop is organized by Sally Wyatt and colleagues from the Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio. *Procedure:* · Send abstracts of 500 words to José Cornips ( j.cornips(a)maastrichtuniversity.nl<https://mail-xc-01.iisg.nl/owa/redir.aspx?C=27cf76192fce4338945d7eacdf7d12b…>) by *8 December*. · Participants will be notified by the end of the year. · Those selected will be required to submit extended abstracts/short papers (of 3000 words) by *1 March. * · These will be distributed to all participants prior to the workshop which will be held in Maastricht on *23 March 2011*. · Participation is free but no funding is available to support travel or accommodation.
