Hi everyone. We are just beginning to launch Dedoose <http://www.dedoose.com/> and are hoping to get more feedback from the research community. So if you could spare a few minutes check out our site, and the video's and please let us know what you think. Specifically how we could make the video's & site better to appeal to the wide range of researchers qualitative & mixed methods covers including market research, social policy research, ethnographic research, etc. A little background info: Dedoose is built by a company formed by Thomas Weisner and Eli Lieber of UCLA's Center for Health and Culture, and is the successor to their earlier tool EthnoNotes. Dedoose aspires to be a do-it-all online, collaborative, easy to use powerhouse research tool enabling efficient and effective research and analyses at about $11 per month. Call for Abstracts: Seamlessly Mobile?: Mobile Communication @ a Crossroads 2011 International Communication Association (ICA) Pre-conference Workshop May 24 – 25, 2011, Boston MA, USA Mobile phones are becoming increasingly adept as ubiquitous tools that serve purposes beyond that of mere voice communication. How we conceptualize mobile -mediated communication alongside computer-mediated communication is less distinct as access to the Internet becomes more integrated into mobile phone devices. Are people moving toward a more seamless integration of mobile and computer media as supporting their communication needs? Is the integration of the Internet into mobile phones shifting how people conceptualize what it means to be “online” vs. “offline”? Does this shift in mobile communication bear any social consequences? This preconference will provide a venue for innovative scholars from around the world who are doing research in the area of mobile communication. It will give them a chance to gather and discuss the challenges that this shift in the use of mobile phones poses not only for the users but for those doing research on mobile communication. We welcome abstracts that will focus on the following areas related to these provocative questions: · Patterns of mobile phone use and differences related to gender, age, lifestyle, culture, and/or access · Ethics and social responsibility of use, shifts in social expectations of remote vs. co-present others · Threats to privacy and issues of surveillance as they relate to technological innovations like GPS & location devices. · Research design and methodological challenges, including finding venues for one’s work · The expansion of online and offline social networking and its demands · Technology, design, and accessibility issues/challenges/expansion and development (i.e. emerging markets) · Perceptions of use and imagining use beyond current capabilities (i.e. mobile fantasies, mobile art, mobile personalities, mobile witnessing/activism) The preconference will be comprised of formal panel presentations, opportunities for informal discussions, and time for networking. In addition there may be invited performances of innovative artists whose work focuses on mobile communication as it relates to the themes of this preconference. Definition of on-line community through homophily

Hello, everybody. I'm looking for papers, that define on-line communities through common itnerests. My idea is to prove, that many so-called communities in LiveJournals are not such, because there is too few discussions and other kind of interaction. So that joining such a community is mostly a demonstration of taste and part of self-presentation in their profiles. In order to prove that I want to run a PCA on the data from one of such communities like in Paolilo, Wright and Mercure's article ( http://www.scribd.com/doc/353326/The-Social-Semantics-of-LiveJournal-FOAF-S…) Their data show that there is no correlation between interests and friends and I understand it as lack of homophily. (Am I right?) So, that is my working hypothesis I want to prove. That's why I need some sources. I looked through Barry Wellman's works but he uses another approach. -- Alexander Semenov. I don't believe this posted the first time I mailed it. Sorry if it's a double post! Alejandro, I'm actually working on this topic for my dissertation work. There are A LOT of examples out there. I was invited to participate in a conference for games developers and multimedia artist, and I´m thinking to talk about user´s rebellions in online games and virtual worlds. Reading the Celia Pearce´s book "Communities of play" (excellent reading) I found a mention of a WoW rebellion, in 2004. Can you suggest me some other readings about this kind of grass-root protest movements? Also any pictures?
