Re: [Air-L] Fwd: most popular passwords (Sari)
by Seda Guerses 11 Nov '10

this is a belated answer to the password discussion and what counts as a secure password. there was a recent paper at ccs on why entropy based metrics (or for that matter most other universal metrics) do not provide formulas for secure passwords, since the attacker models cannot be foreseen. the authors state in their conclusion: Our experiments categorically show that the notion of password entropy, as put forward in the NIST SP800-63 document, does not provide a valid metric for measuring the security provided by password creation policies. This is not to cast dispersions at the rest of the SP800-63 document which is otherwise of the highest quality. Furthermore, we validated the findings in [7], using empirical evidence, that there is no way to convert the notion of Shannon entropy into the guessing entropy of password creation policies. the author has since written some further blog posts discussing the results: http://reusablesec.blogspot.com/2010/10/new-paper-on-password-security-metr… nevertheless, knowing the most popular passwords is probably in itself important feedback to any "root", if not non-root users, cheers, s. You can easily get a password that is strong enough (in bits please, NOT in number of symbols) to remain secure over your entire life time? I know, you won't be able to remember it (of course, I don't), but you can always save it in an encrypted Keypass database. For portability, copy that database to your memory stick. Lose you memory stick (I did)? No problem, since the database is safeguarded under AES 256 bit. [apologies for x-posting] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear AOIR colleagues, First call for papers for the Mobile, digital and social media stream for ANZCA 2011 – Communication on the Edge: Shifting Boundaries and Identities 6-8 July 2011. The University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. www.management.ac.nz/anzca2011 FULL PAPERS DUE FOR REFEREEING: Monday 7th February 2011 ABSTRACTS FOR NON-REFEREED PAPERS: Monday 7th February 2011 Stream Coordinators: Clare Lloyd and Scott Rickard Digital communication is impacting on our everyday lives, constantly shifting and changing our personal relationships, and enhancing opportunities to interact with others. Or does it? What challenges lie ahead in an era when manufacturers dominate the market place, and challenge our conceptions of our digital everyday lives with new apps, services and devices? And in what ways are we adopting, adapting, and appropriating technologies to improve our everyday communications? How are social participation sites challenging our personal understanding of risk, control and privacy? Or perhaps our identities are being challenged by the ubiquitous camera; reconceptualising our notions of who we are, and our locations both physical and virtual? How are marginalised communities and organisations engaging with digital communications; is the digital divide widening or narrowing? The mobile, digital and social media stream welcomes submissions that address the conference theme, and or contemporary issues in relation to mobile communications, mobile media, social media, and digital media. CFP: JCMC Special Issue on the Hyperlinked Society
by Matthew Weber 10 Nov '10

10 Nov '10

Apologies for cross-posting. Questions can be directed to the editors at jcmchyperlinked(a)gmail.com ***** CALL FOR PAPERS Special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication ***** The Hyperlinked Society: Understanding the Changing Nature of Communication in Online Environments ***** GUEST EDITORS: Matthew S. Weber, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University Chung Joo Chung, Department of Communication, SUNY Buffalo Han Woo Park, WCU Webometrics Institute, YeungNam University DEADLINES: Paper submission deadline: January 15, 2011 Anticipated publication: Fall 2011 FOCUS: In today¹s networked society, hyperlinks are well established as critical communicative tools for individuals and organizations alike. The overabundance of information available online has placed an increased value on hyperlinks as organizing mechanisms, guiding attention and directing access to resources. Even in a world of social media, links continue to provide structure and dictate information flow. Whether they are shared through news portals, search engines or emails, hyperlinks direct individuals through complex network of information and ultimately dictate the type of news and information an individual is able to access. There is a clear need to better understand the impact that hyperlinks have guiding access to information and diverse viewpoints. On a larger scale, the aggregation of links is a proxy for partnerships and alliances between organizations, and even the international flow of information. Research examining online networks draws on a wide range of analytical techniques, including large-scale network analysis, web crawling and scraping, and innovative approaches to data analysis. This special issue examines the role of hyperlinks in shaping and guiding today¹s information society, stemming from a number of cutting edge projects in this field This special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication invites papers examining the role of hyperlinks as a channel for online communication in any of the above contexts. Suggested submission topics include: · Hyperlinks and information flow · Linking and digital connections in social media · Digital traces, hyperlinking, and the growth of online communication · Organizational structure online, and the relation of organizations to hyperlinks · Public discussion, public diplomacy and online information flow In keeping with the traditions of JCMC, this special issue is not intended to be a discussion of technical aspects of hyperlinks (algorithms, etc). Full papers of 7,000 to 10,000 words are due on January 15, 2011. Submitted articles will be reviewed and decisions regarding acceptance will be made by late-February 2011. Inquiries and submissions can be directed to jcmchyperlinked(a)gmail.com. The anticipated publication date for this special issue is Fall 2011.

Extended Call for Papers MEA Convention June 23-26 2010 University of Alberta, Canada
by Janet Sternberg 10 Nov '10

10 Nov '10

Extended Call for Papers The Twelfth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association June 23-26, 2011 University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada http://www.media-ecology.org "Space, Place, and the McLuhan Legacy" Extended deadline for submissions: December 15, 2010 In 2011, the University of Alberta will host the Herbert Marshall McLuhan Edmonton Centenary in celebration of the birth of the influential scholar and public figure in Edmonton, Canada, on July 21, 1911. As part of the centenary festivities, the Media Ecology Association will be holding its annual convention in the city of Edmonton to provoke academic dialogue and raise public awareness of media ecology and the relevance of McLuhan's body of work to today's media-rich urban landscapes. McLuhan gave much attention to the changing environment of the city in the wake of technological change. As he stated in an article published in Canadian Architect in June 1961,"[t]oday the entire human community is being translated into 'auditory space,' or into that 'field of simultaneous relations,' by electric broadcasting. It behooves the architect and town planner, above all, to know what this means" (p. 52). For McLuhan, the city is a "technological composite," a patchwork of media and technologies built up over time and space. In this context, new technologies may be imagined as "punctuations" in our historical landscape, inaugurating irreversible cultural, social, and economic changes. Locating the MEA convention in the heart of Edmonton's urban centre will provide an occasion to reflect on the significance of this Western Canadian city in shaping McLuhan's early explorations of perspective as a fundamental artistic and communicational principle. The 12th Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association invites papers, panels, creative projects, and other proposals exploring space, place and city in the context of the McLuhan intellectual legacy. How might media ecology inform today's architecture and city planning? What is the relationship between urban and virtual media realities? What is the meaning of the city in the "global village"? How do new media technologies intertwine, intersect and reform today's urban landscapes? A suite of themes have been developed for the Centenary, presented in the form of five probes or heuristics, which McLuhan often used in his teaching and public addresses: Media as extensions of the human senses; Media as "punctuations" in history (bias of time, bias of space); Figure and ground as a means of achieving a deep understanding of changes in perception occasioned by new media; The city as a technological composite; The city as classroom. Convention submissions that reflect on these and related themes drawn from McLuhan's legacy of thought are welcome. Submissions on any topic of interest to Media Ecology are also encouraged. Please submit papers, paper abstracts, and session proposals electronically using the online submission system by December 15, 2010. Go to http://mea2011.org/ and follow the link to "Submit Proposals Online." SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED IN FRENCH AS WELL AS ENGLISH. A maximum of two submissions per author will be accepted. Authors who wish their papers to be considered for the Top Paper or Top Student Paper award must indicate that on their submissions. All submissions will be acknowledged. Campus housing will be available. Tours of historic sites associated with the McLuhan legacy in Edmonton will be offered. Inquiries may be addressed to the Convention Coordinators: Marco Adria (marco.adria at ualberta.ca) University of Alberta Catherine Adams (cathy.adams at ualberta.ca) University of Alberta Additional details will be forthcoming at http://www.media-ecology.org

High school students' use of ICT for communication about schoolwork
by Van Cleemput Katrien 08 Nov '10

08 Nov '10

Dear AIR members, A small part of my Phd research will be about high school students' 'spontaneous'* use of ICT to talk to other students about school (e.g. compare assignments through e-mail, work on group tasks through IM, send text messages to provide emotional support etc..). I am however experiencing some difficulties with finding literature on this specific topic. It seems like quite some research has been done on teacher-teacher use of ICT and teacher-student use of ICT, but less on student-student use of ICT? It would be very helpful if someone could suggest some interesting articles/books to get me started. Thank you Katrien Van Cleemput University of Antwerp * Not through 'official' ICT provided by the school (like Blackboard)
