post-AoIR games research ethics workshop - Oct. 25-26, 2010
by Charles Ess 26 Apr '10

26 Apr '10

Dear AoIR-ists, We are very pleased to announce the following workshop, to be held shortly following the AoIR conference this October in Gothenburg - we hope that some of you will find this a good reason to extend your stay next fall in Scandinavia! Please distribute as appropriate to potentially interested colleagues and lists. The announcement will also appear on the FMKJ website later on this week. Very great thanks to Kim Schrøder of the FMKJ, Kirsten Frandsen, Niels Brügger, Rikke Toft Nørgaard and Beatrice Gamborg (IMV, Aarhus University), and the committed presenters for their help in organizing the workshop. - charles ess Institut for Informations- og Medievidenskab Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N. Denmark mail: <imvce(a)hum.au.dk> tel: (+45) 8942 9250 Distinguished Research Professor, Interdisciplinary Studies Drury University, Springfield, Missouri 65802 USA == Games Research and Ethics: Current Issues, Possible Resolutions Sponsored by The Danish National Research School in Media, Communication and Journalism (FMKJ), the Department of Information- and Media Studies (IMV), Aarhus University, and the (U.S.) National Science Foundation, Project number 0924604. Organizer: Charles Ess October 25-26, Aarhus, Denmark. (Venue to be announced) Contact: Charles Ess <imvce(a)hum.au.dk>: Beatrice Gamborg (workshop administrative assistant) <imvbg(a)hum.au.dk> The rapid development of computer-based / networked games in all their forms has inspired growing research into a range of questions, from concerns about potential social impacts (e.g., violence in games such as Grand Theft Auto) to interest in how player groups in such MMOGs as World of Warcraft resemble and differ from other online communities. At the same time, computer games thus evoke new sorts of ethical challenges for researchers. For example, a central research ethics question especially in Europe with its strict laws protecting personal information is: What are the obligations, if any, of the researcher to protect the identity and confidentiality of her research subjects? This concern becomes especially tricky, say, for an ethnographer who records voice chats of guild players in a MMOG. While texts from a text chat may be paraphrased so as to protect the identity of their authors in a published research report manipulating voice recordings in analogous ways may not be so easy. Can the ethnographer safely publish these as part of her research, or is she ethically obliged to disguise or conceal this part of her research for the sake of protecting the confidentiality of her subjects? The goal of the workshop is to explore the novel ethical difficulties facing those undertaking games research and this in a two-fold way. One, the course includes two panels of presentations - open to interested internet researchers and scholars, including participants in the AoIR conference in Gothenburg the previous week - by leading scholars and researchers on games and games research ethics: Elizabeth Buchanan (Director, Center for Information Policy Research (CIPR), and chair, AoIR ethics working group) Mia Consalvo (Visiting Professor, MIT, and current President, AoIR) Malin Sveningsson (University of Skövde, Sweden) Annette Markham (Senior Research Fellow, Internet Research Ethics, CIPR, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee) Miguel Sicart (IT-University, Copenhagen, and author of The Ethics of Computer Games, MIT Press, 2009), and T.L. Taylor (IT-University, Copenhagen). These presentations will provide an overview of contemporary understanding and reflection on central ethical and methodological issues in games research. Two, the workshop encourages PhD students (who attend the workshop under the sponsorship of FMKJ) to contribute their current research and specific ethical challenges in an ³extended master class,² constituted by an informal paper/poster-session designed to catalyze dialogue and debate with the invited presenters. PhD students will be asked to submit either a paper or poster. Students will be assigned to a working group of no more than 3 students plus one or two of the senior workshop presenters. Each student will have 10 minutes to present his/her paper/poster, followed by comments from a designated respondent. The attending senior scholar(s) will then offer additional comments and continue open discussion, for a total time of 1.5 hours. If enough students participate, you will also be able to attend / audit a second such class. In these ways, we anticipate that PhD students will receive useful advice and guidance and that you in turn will contribute your work from the praxis of your research to the reflections and frameworks continuously being developed by the invited presenters. Course registration In order to register for the course, you should send an email to Beatrice Gamborg (workshop administrative assistant) <imvbg(a)hum.au.dk> by October 1 2010. You should also attach a 1-page description of your PhD project. Phd students wishing to present a paper or poster must also submit their paper/poster by this date. You are welcome to contact either Charles Ess (<imvce(a)hum.au.dk>) or Kirsten Frandsen, Head of PhD study programme, (<imvkf(a)hum.au.dk>) for additional information. Maximum number of PhD participants: 20. * The morning presentations on Monday and Tuesday (25-26. October - see preliminary schedule below), are open to interested scholars and researchers, including those attending the AoIR annual conference the previous week in Gothenburg, Sweden. Registration for general audience Those interested in attending the open presentations are required to register via email with Beatrice Gamborg (workshop administrative assistant) <imvbg(a)hum.au.dk> by October 1 2010. Registrants will be assessed a fee to cover catering costs (fee to be determined). Course Requirements and ECTS points Participation in the course requires two kinds of preparation: readings that address each of the presentations in the course, and a 10-page paper or poster-session equivalent that you must submit by October 1 2010. The paper / poster presentation should outline your doctoral project, with particular reference to the research design and its methodological challenges. The course readings will be available by late September 2010. ECTS points 1.5 ECTS for participation without presenting a paper / poster. 1.5 ECTS for presenting a paper / poster i.e., 3 ECTS possible. Costs The Danish National Research School in Media, Communication and Journalism (FMKJ) will cover all expenses for Ph.D. students who are enrolled in the School. PhD students who are not enrolled in FMKJ will have to pay for their own travel, accommodation, and meals while in Aarhus. Preliminary Program Monday 25. Final reminder: submission deadline 1 May // special issue of Digital Icons on War, Conflict and Commemoration in the Age of Digital Reproduction
by Adi Kuntsman 26 Apr '10

26 Apr '10

Final reminder: the deadline for submissions is 1 May 2010 Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media http://www.digitalicons.org/ **Call for proposals for the Special Issue War, Conflict and Commemoration in the Age of Digital Reproduction ( Autumn 2010)** Wars, conflicts and commemoration occupy the minds of today's users of new media across the globe, especially those in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe: from digital accounts of 'wars on terror' to virtual museums of political terror under communism; from cyberwars against websites and databases to computer war games; from on-line anti-war organising to virtual memorials to WWII soldiers; from photo-and video- reporting on warfare in Kosovo, Chechnya, Gaza or Georgia to flash-mobs of political protest or racist incitement; from digitalised personal memories and family histories to YouTube clips featuring victorious presidential speeches. The aim of this special issue is to explore the ways wars and conflicts are mediated, commemorated, reported and discussed on the Internet as well as in other forms of new media, including mobile phones, digital broadcasting and computer games. What is the role of new media in understanding, representing, negotiating and remembering (or forgetting) war and terror? What is the status of testimony, evidence and reportage in the age of digital reproduction? What practices of memory do new information and communication technologies entail? What structures of feeling operate in on-line reports and debates around military operations and human suffering? How can digital mediations of conflict bring people and communities together, while tearing others apart? And lastly, how can the embodied, physical violence intensify in digital interactions, and how can it be resisted? This special issue of Digital Icons aims to create a forum for scholars working in the fields of war, conflict, commemoration, digital media, and new media, while simultaneously addressing linguistic, cultural, historical and political aspects of new media use in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe. We invite original articles that focus on one or more countries of the region, or on their diasporas. We also welcome theoretical essays, reflection by media practitioners on their own practices, contributions from artists and authors, and reviews of relevant projects, books and events. Deadline for submissions: 1 May 2010 Anticipated date of publication: October 2010 Please contact Adi Kuntsman warconflictcommemoration(a)googlemail.com or DI editors editor(a)digitalicons.org to discuss your submission. When submitting your work, please include the following information: a biographical statement (100-120 words in English) and an abstract/description of the submission (or the first paragraph of the essay if appropriate) (about 150 words in English). -- Dr. Adi Kuntsman Leverhulme Early Career Fellow Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures The University of Manchester Second Floor, Arthur Lewis Building, room 2.007 Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK http://www.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/ricc/index.html http://adi.kuntsman.googlepages.com

CFP: M/C Journal 'waste' Issue
by Axel Bruns 25 Apr '10

25 Apr '10

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 26 April 2010 M/C - Media and Culture http://www.media-culture.org.au/ is calling for contributors to the 'waste' issue of M/C Journal http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ M/C Journal is looking for new contributors. Founded in 1998, M/C is a crossover journal between the popular and the academic, and a blind- and peer-reviewed journal. To see what M/C Journal is all about, check out our Website, which contains all the issues released so far, at <http://journal.media-culture.org.au/>. To find out how and in what format to contribute your work, visit <http://journal.media-culture.org.au/journal/submission.php>. Call for Papers: 'waste' Edited by Kirsten Seale and Caroline Hamilton Walter Benjamin's work eloquently testifies that reading 'the rags, the refuse' reveals much about the constitution of culture. What a culture does not value speaks as much about that culture as what it does value. In any economy that fetishises the commodity and consumption the realm of waste, that which is left over or left behind, is politicised. The politics of waste, however, are problematic. The production and classification of waste is systemic with capitalist modes of production and their social and cultural taxonomies. Consequently, there are compelling reasons for waste to be brought to the fore as a topic for cultural enquiry. It is all the more timely given the environmental dimensions and pressures of waste. In this issue of M/C Journal we seek contributions that consider the matter and metaphor of waste in diverse cultural contexts. Beyond considerations of waste in terms of trash and refuse we seek to delve into areas of waste overlooked: wasted time, wasted bodies, getting wasted, literal and metaphorical wastelands and dumping grounds. Contact the editors at waste(a)journal.media-culture.org.au, and submit articles of 3,000 words in length through our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ Article deadline: 25 June 2010 Issue release date: 25 Aug. 2010 M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture. Contributors are directed to past issues of M/C Journal for examples of style and content, and to the submissions page for comprehensive article submission guidelines. M/C Journal articles are blind peer-reviewed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further M/C Journal issues scheduled for 2010 and 2011: 'waste': article deadline 25 June 2010, release date 25 Aug. 2010 'pig': article deadline 20 Aug. 2010, release date 20 Oct. 2010 'coalition': article deadline 15 Oct. 2010, release date 15 Dec. 2010 'doubt': article deadline 21 Jan. 2011, release date 23 Mar. 2011 'diaspora': article deadline 4 Mar. 2011, release date 4 May 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- M/C - Media and Culture is located at <http://www.media-culture.org.au/>. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- M/C Journal is online at <http://journal.media-culture.org.au/>. Research around digital divide in Computer mediated communication by speech-impaired
by Pavan Garre 25 Apr '10

25 Apr '10

Dear AIR members, I am User Experience design masters student from India. For a research module on "Digital design, and, society", I am doing research around speech-impaired in the context of digital divide, mostly around urban Bangalore. For the next ten to fifteen days, I plan to do extensive research from desk research to contextual interviews. As my mentor, is from indifferent domain, is guiding very passively and remotely, I am opening up to ask for some active remote guidance. Apart from remote guidance for few days, I am ready to accept every form of suggestions, opinions, comments and research material around speech-impaired and digital divide in computer mediated communication. So far, I have written two mediocre unguided research papers and probably, this would be guided first-authored research paper. Being user experience designer, I have ACM student membership and, my college has JSTOR membership. Cheers, Pavan Garre User Experience Designer National Institute of Design, R & D Campus, Bangalore, KR, India. http://artifactsby.me +919620603379
