Announcing a new book from Routledge: Esther Milne, Letters, Postcards, Email: Technologies of Presence (Routledge, 2010). http://www.routledge.com/books/Letters-Postcards-Email-isbn9780415993289 Contemporary accounts of the impact of electronic, digitally networked cultures often construct an apocalyptic narrative of decisive shifts and abrupt breaks: the new technology arrives, it seems, out of nowhere, sweeping away the old and ushering in the new. In response to such accounts, Letters, Postcards, Email: Technologies of Presence argues that the relation between old and new communication systems is more complex than allowed in current media theory. Narratives of change are dramatically complicated by the striking continuities between different communication systems. In this original study, Esther Milne focuses on one of these continuities, specifically a fantasy of presence that, she argues, pervades the socio-technical representations of letters, postcards and emails. What are the enabling conditions for presence to function as a technological and rhetorical strategy across distributed communication platforms? To address this question Milne explores historically the symbolic and material representations of presence through three media sites: a networked postal community of nineteenth-century letter writers; postcard correspondence of First World War soldiers; and a contemporary email discussion list. Although a number of writers have productively historicised the socio-critical formulations of presence, telepresence and co-presence, these phenomena have usually been confined to representations within electronic media. (eg Coyne, 2001; Glotz et al, 2005; Goldberg 2000; Hjorth, 2005, 2007; Ito, 2005; Lombard and Ditton, 1997; Mitchell, 1999; Murphy, 2000; Ryan, 1999; Sconce, 2000; Sheridan, 1992; Sobchack, 1994). What remains under-examined is the extent to which older technologies, such as the postal service, also enable an experience of intimacy, immediacy, immersion and presence. Furthermore, when epistolary scholars have investigated the production of presence through literary or aesthetic formations, they have limited the focus to a discrete site: either the letter as a ‘real’, historical artefact (eg Decker, 1998) or the letter’s representational deployment through fiction and art (eg Kauffman, 1992) . In contrast, Milne traces the affective configuration of presence through empirical data; material bases; and rhetorical structures, to demonstrate the interrelation between imagined presence and notions of intimacy, privacy and disembodiment. Although the correspondents of letters, postcards and emails are not, usually, present to one another as they write and read their exchanges, this does not necessarily inhibit affective communication. Indeed, this study demonstrates how physical absence may, in some instances, provide correspondents with intense intimacy and a spiritual, almost telepathic, sense of the other’s presence. While corresponding by letter, postcard or email, readers construe an imaginary, incorporeal body for their correspondents that, in turn, reworks their interlocutor’s self-presentation. In this regard the fantasy of presence reveals a key paradox of cultural communication, namely that material signifiers can be used to produce the experience of incorporeal presence. Differentiated Support in the Internet Age

In 1990, Scot Wortley and I published "Different Strokes from Different Folks" in the AmJSoc. Nice paper, showing that different peeps gave different types of help. For example, parents gave financial aid; friends gave sociability. I'm wondering if anyone has done similar research in the Internet age, that would also build media in. For ex, emotional support is easier to give online than material aid. And perhaps it is time online that is the key, rather than role type (in 1990, all we had was phone vs F2f). If you have done such research, or know of some, I Urgently need some leads. Already published stuff would be great, because it's more cite-able, but if you have some working papers, like to hear about that too. Telling me today would be wonderful. The conference is held yearly in late Spring or early Summer, and attracts an international audience of ~250 attendees. The focus of the conference is the presentation of papers describing novel research results. FDG is typically held in-cooperation with one or more special interest groups of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the proceedings of the conference from 2008 onward are archived in the ACM Digital Library. The conference series was originally created at Microsoft in 2006, and was known as the Academic Days on Game Development in Computer Science Education (GDCSE). The research focus of GDCSE was education using (and about) computer game technology. In 2009, the conference changed its name to the Foundations of Digital Games, and expanded its scope to become a "big tent" computer games research conference, covering a spectrum of computer game research topics while retaining a strong interest in educational uses of games. In the run-up to the 2009 conference, Microsoft transferred ownership and organization of the conference to the Society for the Advancement of the Study of Digital Games (SASDG), a nonprofit corporation with an academic board of directors. This year we received 94 full papers and 12 short-paper submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three reviewers and most submissions were reviewed by four reviewers. In cases where there were differences of opinion among reviewers, the reviewers were invited to look through the reviews and revise their reviews if they felt necessary. For borderline papers, an additional reviewer was asked to provide feedback. All the reviews themselves were then reviewed by the respective track chairs and discussed during a conference call. Finally, borderline papers were examined once again by the program chair before a final decision was made. For FDG 2010, of the 94 full papers submitted 32 were accepted (32/94 = 34%), and of the 12 short papers submitted 3 were accepted (3/12 = 25%). Both full papers and short papers will be presented during the conference and will appear in the proceedings. With the power to gather people with similar interests together, virtual communities have gained attention by not only practitioners, but researchers, as well. Virtual community participation refers to those behaviours in which members mainly participate. Basically, past researchers have found two types of behaviours: lurking and active participation. Although many studies discussed the motivations to participate in virtual communities, including gift economy, pursuit of power, sense of belonging, sense of inclusion, relationship building, and so forth, none of them have given a clear and comprehensive framework on the reasons for virtual community participation. As the field is now in a position to call for a synthesis publication to integrate all aspects of virtual community participation theories, it’s important to edit a book to give both researchers and general virtual community practitioner the theoretical guidelines. This book will bring together the issues that managers, practitioners, and researchers must consider when planning, implementing, and managing members in virtual communities. Objective of the Book The book gives in-depth coverage of state-of-the-art research on virtual community participation. It first covers the concept of virtual community participation, followed by several streams of virtual community participation theories. It will be written for professionals, researchers, practitioners, and designers who want to improve their understanding of the strategic role of virtual community participation within the development of digital communication. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by May 28, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 13, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
