possible workshops for ir11
by jeremy hunsinger 19 Jan '10

I'm thinking about putting together a pre-conference workshop at ir11. I'm torn between a few topics and I'd like to gauge interest before i go further. I'm thinking of one workshop as: 'Forms of the Critical in internet Research' in which we'd discuss what we mean by the critical. In my work, critical is an essentially contested concept, which means it is defined not singularly, but multiply and every paper should confront this multiple nature and try to bring meaning to the word critical within the theme of the conference. So the workshop would require papers a few months before, which we'd review and discuss and try to develop. Another would be much the same, but would center on the topic of Politics and the political. Ideally, i'd like to confront some of the politics of research in terms of internet research. otherwise, anyone interested in say... values in design for a workshop, infrastructure studies, or learning infrastructures? both of these would be open call workshop, probably with minimal external funding that would hope to develop some of the work toward a publishable form. We would need 10-20 participants for either, though we could get higher numbers. Everything would be reviewed before inclusion, etc. Finally, i could not do a workshop, which is an option i've not pursued for several years. thoughts? please respond offlist. Re: [Air-L] distributed imagery and copyright (was: a question of open source ethics)
by Mridula 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

The issue with the independent ended up by the paper apologizing for the use of the 'all rights reserved' photo. Here is more on it the British Journal of Photography- http://www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=872764 To me (as a less than amateur photographer) the issue is very clear. When I post something under 'all rights reserved' that is how it should remain. If someone asked me permission for the use of a photograph and they are not for profit, I ask for a credit and let them use it. If it is a commercial site I ask for token money and usually in India you never hear from them again. In this part some of us use 'all rights reserved' to initiate a conversation. I once found, and not so long back, a photo of mine in an Indian national newspaper's Sunday supplement after cropping out (c) Mridula D from the image. Hence, the hesitation to use creative commons, that it would be taken as an excuse by everyone to use pictures. Regards, Mridula -- http://www.gonomad.com/traveltalesfromindia/

CFP: IJEI special issue 'Digital technologies and educational integrity'
by Chris Moore 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Call for papers: 'Digital technologies and educational integrity' A special issue of the online refereed journal IJEI Edited by Chris Moore and Ruth Walker University of Wollongong This special issue of the International Journal for Educational Integrity (IJEI) seeks articles that address the impact of digital technologies on educational integrity. Many different terms have emerged in an attempt to capture the shifting terrain of media use and users in various networked environments: 'social', 'participatory', 'user-generated' or simply 'new' media. Common to the online interactive spaces of Web2.0 is the challenge of technologies and practices that are capable of changing the way we teach, learn, and share knowledge. How can we best engage and support students and colleagues coming to terms with the dynamics of these technologies and the development of new literacies? We are particularly interested in innovative research from scholars in cultural and media studies and/or the scholarship of teaching and learning, and welcome interest from other disciplinary researchers, who might consider a broad range of questions about digital technologies that critically unpack the conversation about academic integrity and go beyond a preoccupation with plagiarism and research ethics. Critical voices of concern, examples of best practice and consideration of the perceived impact of digital technology on institutional boundaries are keenly sought as is research exploring the collaborative approaches to social and participatory media that challenge conceptions about authorial identity and scholarly writing practices. Research examining the development of new literacies that celebrate the appropriation, adaptation and transformation of source material would fit well within the scope of this special issue. We also welcome reviews of relevant books or publications. Abstracts (max 500 words) due date: 31st March 2010 Full papers (3-6000 words) due date: 1st July 2010 Book reviews (1000 words) due date: 1st September 2010 Special issue release date: December 2010 Please send all enquiries and abstracts to the editors at ruth_walker(a)uow.edu.au. International Journal for Educational Integrity: http://www.ojs.unisa.edu.au/index.php/IJEI/issue/current Submission style guide: http://www.unisa.edu.au/EducationalIntegrity/Journal_submission_guidelines.… About the editors: Chris Moore is a father, gamer and lecturer in Digital Communications, Games and Media Studies at the University of Wollongong. Currently researching Australian gamers and their cultural, economic and social contributions, this focus has emerged from analysis of the complementary and alternative regimes of intellectual property generation and management, including the Open Source movement and digital games modification sub-cultures and online learning practices. Ruth Walker teaches a range of academic writing programs in the Faculties of Creative Arts and Law at the University of Wollongong. Her research interests take a cultural and media studies approach to academic integrity, particularly regarding the impact of media technologies on critical writing practices. She is currently the deputy chair of the Asia Pacific Forum for Educational Integrity (APFEI).

Satellite-Linked PDAs Promise To Speed Haitian Relief Effort > John Dodge / SmartPlanet / January 15 2010
by gerrymck 18 Jan '10

18 Jan '10

As Haitians dig furiously through the rubble to find survivors and the dead, Global Relief Technologies (GRT) is planning to map and record the destruction on the ground to give relief workers critical realtime information as they race against the clock. The Portsmouth, N.H. company’s Rapid Data Management System will be used to collect data on the ground with PDAs. A variety of media - texts, reports, photos, video and tweets - are transmitted via satellite to an Internet-based and secure Collaboration Center custom-designed for the client and its relief workers. Satellite communications are critical because land lines and cell towers are down in the ravaged areas. With respect to Haiti, GRT is working with the Marines, National Guard, Red Cross and the USS Comfort floating hospital ship, which is heading to Haiti. Members in those units can securely access the Collaboration Center through any number of computing devices, PDAs and smartphones. [snip] Just about any rescue or reconstruction information can be handled within the RDMS to answer questions such as. is a building intact, partially damaged or destroyed? What’s it location? What does it look like before and after? Perhaps there are people still trapped inside. How many and for how long? What’s known about their injuries? What’s the local availability of resources? What are the detailed conditions of the roads, bridges and other infrastructure? And emergency alerts can be broadcast to field workers as events dictate. With the earthquake disaster and heartbreaking search for survivors dominating the news, local media outlets here in Boston with its sizable Haitian community have rushed to cover GRT. ACLU reports US Customs searches 1500+ digital devices at border in nine months]
by George Lessard 18 Jan '10

18 Jan '10

- RT @mediamentor: RT @michaelgeist: RT @eMichaelPower: ACLU reports US Customs searches 1500+ digital devices at border in nine months: http://ow.ly/XU7F [excerpt] The ACLU's analysis of the first batch of documents released by CBP reveals: In a span of just nine months, CBP officials searched over 1,500 electronic devices belonging to travelers. Under the current policy, they were not required to justify a single one of these searches. Travelers' laptops are not the only devices at risk of being examined, detained, or seized by the government. In fact, cell phones were the most commonly searched and seized devices between October 2008 and June 2009. Other types of devices that were searched and detained during this time period include digital cameras, thumb drives, hard drives, and even DVDs. Between July 2008 and June 2009, CBP transferred electronic files found on travelers' devices to third-party agencies almost 300 times. Over half the time, these unknown agencies asserted independent bases for retaining or seizing the transferred files. More than 80 percent of the transfers involved the CBP making copies of travelers' files.
