====== CALL FOR PAPERS ====== W I K I S Y M 2 0 1 0 The International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration http://wikisym.org/ws2010/Call+for+Papers July 7-8-9 in Gdańsk, Poland. Co-located with Wikimania 2010 (Intl. Conference on Wikimedia Foundation projects, http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org) Peer-reviewed and archived in the ACM Digital Library. SUMMARY WikiSym, the International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration, will be held this summer in Gdansk, Poland. Starting this year, WikiSym aims to explicitly broaden its scope, exploring not only the thriving wiki community, but also other open movements and open collaboration initiatives. This includes related areas such as open online communities, collaborative creation of multimedia content (with or without wikis), and open journalism and publishing, just to list a few examples. Furthermore, our goal is to establish WikiSym as a venue for the exchange of information, experiences and practices among an interdisciplinary audience, including researchers, practitioners, industry representatives and experts with a wide variety of different backgrounds. As a result, WikiSym has established 3 complementary tracks to merge the contributions from such a diverse community: * Wiki track: Focused on research in wiki technology, wiki websites, wiki communities, and in general any kind of initiative pivoting around wiki software. * Industry track: This new track will focus on the specific needs of enterprises and private companies interested in sharing and promoting their experiences around wikis and open collaboration projects/products/initiatives. * Open collaboration track: This track is a dedicated venue for sharing research results and experiences in initiatives that may not be built specifically on wiki software, but share the "wiki way" of organization. These may include open collaborations, open communities, and open movements that allow the interchange of ideas and contributions from participants with a range of interests and motivations. Research manuscripts may be sent to any of these tracks. However, submitting the same manuscript to more than one track at the same time is not allowed. Therefore, please select the most appropriate track for the topic covered in your manuscript before submitting. IMPORTANT DATES * March 7th: Submission deadline for research papers. * March 21st: Submission deadline for Doctoral Symposium proposals, posters, demonstrations, workshops, panels, tutorials. * May 4th: Notification of acceptance for research papers. * May 11th: Notification of acceptance for Doctoral Symposium proposals, posters, workshops, tutorials, panels. * July 7-9: WikiSym 2010! Given the interdisciplinary nature of wikis and open collaboration initiatives, WikiSym invites contributions in a wide range of fields. TOPICS OF INTEREST: WIKI TRACK * Wiki user experiences, usability, and discourse analysis * Reputation systems and quality assurance processes * Scalability -- social and technical * Wiki technologies and implementations * Translation and multilingual wiki content * Educational applications * Wikis for non-textual media (images, video, audio) * Content dynamics and wiki evolution * Wiki archiving and versioning * Wiki administration: dealing with abuse and resolving conflict * Wikis and the semantic web, knowledge management and tacit knowledge * Wikis for small audiences (departmental and family wikis) * Legal issues (copyright, licensing) * Visualization of wiki structure TOPICS OF INTEREST: INDUSTRY TRACK * Business opportunities around wikis and open collaboration * Best practices to adopt wikis and open collaboration in industry * Information disclosure: practices and experiences * Community building and support * Open publishing and open licensing in the industry * Wikis and open collaboration entrepreneurship * Coopetition: best practices * Interaction and synergies between industries and open communities * Open innovation: strategies and experiences for leaders/followers * Promotion, support and funding of open collaboration initiatives * Knowledge management TOPICS OF INTEREST OPEN COLLABORATION TRACK * Social software for collaboration and work group processes * Open online communities * Technologies for networked collaboration * Social interactions on the web * Open and citizen journalism * Social networks * Collaborative content creation * Distributed development of software * Cooperation for problem resolution * Information disclosure strategies * Open call working environments * Crowdsourcing and information synthesis * Collaborative multimedia collections * Distributed content categorization/tagging * Open publishing * Commons projects and repositories * Distributed selection of content RESEARCH PAPERS Research papers present integrative reviews or original reports of substantive new work: theoretical, empirical, or in the development or deployment of novel systems. We encourage emphasizing lessons learned and providing a clear concise message to the audience about the relevance of the work. The paper must place your work in context within the field, citing related work and indicating clearly what aspects of the work are new. Research papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee to meet rigorous academic standards of publication. They should be written in English and must not exceed 10 pages (for full papers) or 4 pages (for short papers). Papers will be reviewed both with respect to conceptual quality and clarity of presentation. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference in order to present the paper. Accepted submissions will be published in the WikiSym proceedings and archived in the ACM Digital Library. Submitted papers should use the ACM SIG Proceedings Format, see: http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM The Doctoral Symposium is an interactive forum for doctoral students to receive present and discuss their doctoral work. Students who are at least one year away from dissertation completion are invited to submit to the Doctoral Symposium. Students beginning their research are especially invited to attend. To submit a proposal send a 2-3 page description of your dissertation research, including: * A description of your work * The goals---what contributions will your research generate? * The approach---what is being performed to achieve the goals? How will results be validated? Additionally, your adviser must send a brief statement of your dissertation progress to date and a statement of recommendation to the Doctoral Symposium chair. WORKSHOPS Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to discuss and learn about topics that require extended engagement such as new systems, research methods, standards and formats. A workshop should require participants to engage with each other for at least half a day. For shorter sessions, please consider WikiSym's open space format. A workshop proposal should consist of approximately two pages describing what you intend to do and how your session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a concise abstract, proposed time frame (half-day, full-day) and one-paragraph biographies of all people relevant to the submission. Workshop proposals will be reviewed and selected for their interest to the community. Each workshop will be allocated a half-day or a full-day and a room. PANELS Panels provide an interactive forum for bringing together people with interesting points of view to discuss compelling wiki issues. Panels involve participation from both the panelists and audience members in a lively discussion. Proposals for panels should consist of approximately two pages describing what you intend to do and how your session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a concise abstract and one-paragraph biographies of all panelists. A panel submission will be reviewed and selected for their interest to the community. Each panel will be given a 90-minute time slot. POSTERS Poster presentations enable researchers to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or work that is best communicated in conversation. WikiSym's lively poster sessions let conference attendees exchange ideas one-on-one with authors, and let authors discuss their work in detail with those attendees most deeply interested in the topic. Poster proposals may describe original research, engineering, or experience reports. Submissions should consist of a two-page extended abstract outlining the content of the poster. Successful applicants will be invited to display a poster, 1x2m in size, at a special plenary session of the Symposium. DEMONSTRATIONS Wikis are intended to be used, and no format is better suited for demonstrating the utility of new wiki research and technology than showing and using it. If you would like to demonstrate new features or products, this is the place! Demonstrations give presenters an opportunity to show running systems and gather feedback. Demo submissions will be reviewed based on their relevance to the community. A submission should be one page in length, with a title and a short description of the demo. The description should include what you plan to demonstrate, what you hope to get out of demoing, and how the audience will benefit. A short note of any special technical requirements may be included. HOW TO SUBMIT Please submit your research papers in PDF format through our research paper submission system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wikisym2010) For all other papers and proposals, please email the respective chair (see below). All accepted submissions will be published in the proceedings and archived in the ACM Digital Library. (Call for papers) Avatars and Humans conference in Hamburg, Germany
by Jeffrey Wimmer 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

Dear all Apologies for cross-postings. Please send to interested colleagues and students. For more information just contact me Thanks! Jeffrey CALL FOR PAPERS AVATARS AND HUMANS. REPRESENTING USERS IN DIGITAL GAMES Preconference to the ECREA 2010 – 3rd European Communication Conference 12 October 2010, Hamburg, Germany http://www.ecrea2010hamburg.eu ==Topic & Questions== With the rise of digital interactive media, “avatars” – computer generated visual representations of users – have become a crucial link between users and the digital spaces they navigate. While the term “avatar” reaches back to Hinduist scriptures ca. 200 BC, and the use of player representations in games can be traced to the earliest known games played more than 4.000 years ago, it was only in 1985 that the multi-user domain Habitat introduced the term for user representations in virtual worlds. Today, avatars are used in digital games as well as e-commerce applications, social virtual environments, virtual meetings and conferences, and many more digital spaces and applications. However, avatars are not just an interface users manipulate to access and act in digital spaces – avatars and their human users form complex relationships. For instance, avatars may represent the users’ own or created identity, users may develop an emotional attachment or parasocial relation to their avatars, or the design or activities of an avatar may infringe rights or develop an economic value. For the pre-conference “Avatars and Humans”, we encourage submissions from all disciplinary and methodological backgrounds on the complex relations between avatars and their users. Submissions might address, but are not limited to the following topics and questions: * Creating and Using Avatars: How and why do we create avatars, what are the motives and effects of specific kinds of avatars and avatar usage? Do we create avatars similar or dissimilar to us? What kinds of in-game avatars and avatar features enhance or delimit qualities of user experience, such as presence, immersion or enjoyment? * My Avatar and Me: How might we describe the (long-term) relationship between users and their avatars? Which factors influence the users’ identification with and emotional attachment to their avatars? * The (Para-)Sociality of Avatars: Which social psychological factors affect our (avatar’s) interaction with other avatars, either controlled by users or an algorithm? * Avatars and Profiles: How do avatar-based interactive spaces and the (mostly) „profile-based” spaces of social network sites and social media relate, especially in regard to matters of identity and relationship management? Can we observe a growing convergence or interdependence of the two? * Analyzing Avatars: Exploring the user-avatar relationship also requires the description of the avatar itself. What are the relevant properties of avatars? Which analytical instruments can and should be employed for systematic descriptions, codings, analyses of avatars? * Coding Avatars: As computer-generated representations of users, avatars have to be designed and coded, which puts important material constraints and preconditions on potential user-avatar relations. Which factors afford or constraint the customizability and variability of avatars? Which models of artifical intelligence guide the simulated behaviour of computer-controlled avatars? * Avatar Rights and Regulations: People invest time and sometimes sizeable amounts of money in their avatars, and avatars develop reputations that might radiate on their users (or vice versa). Put differently, users develop vested interests in their avatars, and avatars develop an „avatar biography”: Do we need specific “avatar rights” to protect the histories, experiences and reputation of avatars? Which virtual as well as real-life circumstances are neccessary to govern avatars effectively? * Behind and Beyond the Avatar: Which social and cultural processes take place between individuals, avatars and the communities they play in? How do the performances, gestures and emotions of avatars affect community building or the emergence of public communication in game worlds as well as everyday social behavior and society and vice versa? Does avatar-based interaction show the same social dynamics like face-to-face interaction (social control, negotiation, face work etc.), or does it differ – and how? * Methodology of Avatar Research: Which paradigms and instruments might be applied to research concerning the above questions? What is the specific potential, what are possible obstacles of methodological and/or ethical nature when researching avatars? ==Link== For further details, see the website and download the Call for Papers at: http://bit.ly/ECREAgames ==Sumbission== All abstracts should be submitted through the ECREA 2010 website no later than: 30 April 2010. dissertation announcement
by Meryl Krieger 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

Hi all: Just wanted to announce that my dissertation, "Rough to the Board: Creating Performance in American Recording Studios" has been filed with ProQuest. For those of you interested in the American popular music recording industry, you can download it for free from ProQuest as soon as it's available (within the next couple weeks I anticipate). In the meantime, here's the abstract. If any of you want a copy before ProQuest makes it available, please email me off-list and I'll send you a copy. This, by the way, contains my much delayed gender bibliography for those of you who asked for it! Regards, Meryl ------------------------- Janet Meryl Krieger ROUGH TO THE BOARD: CREATING PERFORMANCE IN AMERICAN RECORDING STUDIOS This dissertation examines the dynamics between performers in the process of creating popular music recordings as they emerge in recording studios, using the synergy created by the blending of two approaches: the traditional model, followed by major labels and larger independent labels, and the do-it-yourself (DIY) model, followed by individual performers and smaller independent labels. Taking a participant-observational approach in fieldwork done from 2002 to 2006, this project presents two case studies that focus on two women singer-songwriters, who differ by age, region, and ethnicity. The case studies chronicle these women’s first recorded CD projects as they composed, rehearsed, performed, and recorded in two mid-sized professional studios in Bloomington, Indiana. The two models, traditional and DIY, intersect in the recording studio, creating a synergy that allows performers to realize their artistic ideals on a recorded CD. The intersection of these two models in the recording studio has not to date ever been taken as a framework for the ethnographic study of popular music production. The dissertation roughly divides into two sections. The first lays out the theoretical and ethnographic frame, situating the data within several fields: ethnomusicology and musicology, new media research, performance studies, and gender scholarship. The second section examines specific recording sessions and interviews to highlight issues raised by the intersection of traditional and DIY modes of music production. It then examines the issues themselves, framing them within the larger concerns of gender, age and race; power dynamics, authority, and the role of expertise; technology and its mediation; and the negotiating role of humor. It then explores how the role of genre reframes during postproduction the music produced in recording sessions, particularly when performers begin touring to market their recordings. Methodology for data collection included observation of a range of recording sessions, from initial rough tracks through final mixes, and observation of performances preceding and separating recording sessions. Formal and informal interviews were conducted with the principals, their recording engineer-producers, and most of their bandmates. -- J. ICANN Fellowships Application Round Opens for Brussels Meeting June 2010
by Fouad Bajwa 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

Dear Members, You should all apply to this and join the world in the governance of the Internet! Apologies if this has already been posted! Shared for your information: ICANN Fellowship Application Round Opens for Brussels Meeting Fellowships Program ensures global representation at ICANN’s International Public Meetings 11 January 2010 MARINA DEL REY, Calif. : The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has launched the 10th round of Fellowship program applications for its 38th International Public Meeting to be held in Brussels, Belgium on 20-25 June 2010. “Just like the Internet, ICANN is global in scope in its operations,” said Theresa Swinehart, ICANN’s Vice President, Global and Strategic Partnerships. “Our Fellowship program has had a lot of success at our last 8 meetings in making sure global voices are heard in the wide variety of public forums that it holds.” For the Nairobi Meeting, there are 26 fellows from 21 countries, chosen from 119 applications received. 10 of the fellows are alumni from at least one of the past eight programmes; 14 fellows are first-time attendees to any ICANN meeting and 2 have attended past meetings, but are first time fellows. Priority is given to applicants who are current residents of developing and least developed nations and interested in participating in ICANN and its supporting organizations, such as the Governmental Advisory Committee, the Country Code Names Supporting Organization, the At-Large and the Generic Names Supporting Organization. The Fellowship program will assist in covering airfare, hotel and a stipend. Recipients will be expected to actively participate in and contribute to ICANN processes. As always, registration for ICANN’s meetings is free for anyone wanting to attend. Applications for the meeting in Brussels will be accepted from now until 1200 PDT (UTC -7) on 19 February 2010. More information, as well as a link to the application for a fellowship, is available online at: https://forms.icann.org/fellowship/applications/icann38/ or email at fellowships(a)icann.org What Is ICANN? To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN doesn’t control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet. -- Regards. -------------------------- Fouad Bajwa Advisor & Researcher ICT4D & Internet Governance Member Multistakeholder Advisory Group (IGF) Member Civil Society Internet Governance Caucus (IGC) My Blog: Internet's Governance http://internetsgovernance.blogspot.com/ Follow my Tweets: http://twitter.com/fouadbajwa MAG Interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATVDW1tDZzA
