Book Notice: Cyber Racism
by Jessie Daniels 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

Greetings Air-L folks (& apologies for cross-posting): I'd like to make you aware of my new book: *Cyber Racism* (Rowman & Littlefield, 2009) about the way racism is moving into the digital era. As an introduction to what the book covers, some friends generously put together a trailer (video) and you can see that video (about 4 minutes) and find other supplemental material (including study guide) here: http://www.cyberracism.com/mediakit.html I'd be happy to visit your campus - either in person or via Skype - to discuss with your class if you decide to adopt the book. Thanks in advance, ~ Jessie Jessie Daniels, PhD Associate Professor Hunter College New York, NY * * * website: http://www.jessiedanielsphd.com * * * blog: http://www.racismreview.com * * *

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION BY DC-AREA FEDERAL AGENCY PERSONNEL, ACADEMICS AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION STAFF - The Bureau of Labor Statistics - Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory - Washington, DC
by Stuart Shulman 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION BY DC-AREA FEDERAL AGENCY PERSONNEL, ACADEMICS AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION STAFF TEST NEW TOOLS FOR SORTING FEDERAL DOCKET MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (FDMS) PUBLIC COMMENTS, BLOG COMMENTS AND OTHER FORMS OF ELECTRONIC PUBLIC DIALOG http://www.umass.edu/qdap/cfp-bls.pdf What: Public Comment Analysis Toolkit Training & Usability Workshops When: Friday January 22, 2010 - Please pick one of two sessions: a) 9:00 am or b) 11:00 am Where: The Bureau of Labor Statistics - Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory - Washington, DC (Next to Union Station) Sponsors: The National Science Foundation and the University of Massachusetts Amherst Host: Dr. Stuart Shulman, Director of the Qualitative Data Analysis Program at UMass Amherst Program: Each 105 minute computer lab-based session will consist of three parts. During the first part, Dr. Shulman will introduce the Public Comment Analysis Toolkit and lead the group through a series of steps to establish accounts on the Web-based Public Comment Analysis Toolkit (PCAT). After a brief orientation to the features in the system, all participants will be asked to perform a series of tasks to familiarize themselves with the scope and nature of the PCAT software. Once the testing is complete, a brief, anonymous and confidential usability survey will be available online. Why: Proliferating digitized text collections present multifaceted problems for individuals, groups, corporations, universities, and governments at every level. As the volume of intermixed germane and non-germane information grows (with the latter often growing much more rapidly), the need for more streamlined work flows and assistance from automated tools also grows. On the individual level, the pain is concrete in the form of repetitive mouse click-induced cases of the computer-related carpel tunnel injury. Existing document management platforms compel users to work through lengthy lists, sub-parts or pages of lists, and finally the individual items within those lists with a click-by-click set of repetitive motions on the computer mouse. Getting manually to the next document or document sub-part, isolating the relevant text, and recording the correct classification and associated annotations currently requires too many painful clicks and drags on the mouse even when the number of documents is relatively small. These new tools and technologies are based upon well-researched principles of automated text clustering, work flow efficiency design, analytic efficacy, internal and external validity checks, inter-coder reliability tools, and human-computer interface usability. User feedback at these sessions will shape the future direction of these tools as well as their overall usability. Who Currently Uses PCAT? Among the first 250 PCAT BETA TESTERS are a wide variety of academics as well as personnel from the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US General Services Administration, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Department of Transportation, the US Forest Service, the US Secret Service, the US Department of Agriculture, the Federal Communication Commission, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. For More Information: Please visit http://pcat.qdap.net or write to Dr. Shulman for more information (stu(a)polsci.umass.edu) or call him at 413-545-5375. Directions to the lab are online at: http://www.umass.edu/qdap/BLS-lab-directions.pdf. follow up on the suicide machine /letter to worm, the rotterdam based experimental artscenter
by Seda Guerses 11 Jan '10

11 Jan '10

On behalf of Facebook, the law firm Perkins Coie has sent a Cease and Desist letter to Mike van Gaasbeekfrom WORM, the Rotterdam-based experimental artscenter of which MODDR_labs, creators of the Web2.0 Suicide Machine <http://www.suicidemachine.org>, are a part of.. the letter is also made available here: http://suicidemachine.org/download/Web_2.0_Suicide_Machine.pdf more informaiton on what is happening can be found here: http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/49470 more information on the worm lab can be found here: http://agenda.wormweb.nl/home.php?taal=eng this somehow reminds me of the many over-exaggerated reactions that the uebermorgen project usually gets for their interventions (http://www.ubermorgen.com ). over the years uebermorgen has launched arts projects that point to and make public the contradictions that a lot of bigger companies painstakingly hide through their marketing, advertisement and legal departments in order to save themselves from bad reputation due to their aggressive "survival" tactics. this little spectacle with suicidemachine also coincides with zuckerberg's statement that privacy is dead and facebook wants to be more public: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebooks_zuckerberg_says_the_age_of_p… but obviously, facebook does not really want "You [to]... have control over what you share" (facebook privacy policy) they want you to share and from there have facebook stipulate what happens with your sharing. they want facebook to be the ultimate vitrine of profiles. a fan of and researcher working on facebook myself, i really hope that they make some changes with respect to letting their users download their own information (at this point, i cannot even make a back up of my friend's email addresses on my own computer), let people delete their information, if necessary in an automated manner), and allow people to share their information outside of facebook, just like facebook integrates a lot of their services on its platform. if they want to be more public, then maybe this should not only mean more control for facebook itself, but also some control rights to its users beyond the "privacy settings". anyways, may the unrest continue and hoping that the arts initiative does not have too much trouble with the corporate lawyers. s. Digitally Signed Email
by Tim Jordan 11 Jan '10

11 Jan '10

Dear all, I've been searching for statistics on email traffic of digitally signed email versus non-digitally signed. My understanding of net traffic isn't that extensive but I think these kinds of stats should be able to be generated. It's probably staring me in the face but I can't find anything that either summarises or gives me some raw data to work with. Anyone got a clue? Thanks Tim -- The Open University is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England & Wales, and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302).

Colleagues/ Feeling Far From Blue With This Review >>> [:-) /Gerry "It's Our Turn to Go Mobile in Our Information Centers" Reading _Mobile Libraries_ can help information professionals get up to speed on using mobile devices for more than e-mail. BY CAROLYN J. SOSNOWSKI, MLIS Mobile Libraries [ http://mobile-libraries.blogspot.com/ ] Many of our clients are using mobile devices not only to check e-mail but to accomplish real work. Now, it's our turn to do the same in our information centers. The Mobile Libraries blog provides good information to its readers about products, applications, research, news, and trends in this arena. Of course, e-books have been getting a lot of attention lately, and there's also information on reference services through text messaging Sending short messages to a smartphone, pager, PDA or other handheld device. Text messaging implies sending short messages generally no more than a couple of hundred characters in length. and the integration of mobile technologies with education (to name just a few topics the blog addresses). Is your library's Web site mobile-ready? What do you know about search tools designed for mobile devices? CAROLYN SOSNOWSKI is manager of SLA's Information Center and also the association's e-learning manager. She has more than 13 years' experience in libraries, including six-plus years at SLA.
