facebook and ethnicity

hello again, thank you for all the comments. i was very curious about the facebook study, also because of the names of the researchers who executed the story. lars backstorm has been one of the first authors to tackle the problem of impoosibility of "anonymity" in social network like data structures ***. his paper together with cynthia dwork (the person who developed differential privacy) and jon kleinberg (a prominent social network/graph analyst) was one of the first to show that simple anonymization of a social network by simple de-identification of nodes in the network does not work. i am just wondering why and to which objective there now is this collaboration between social network service providers and researchers that are keen social network analysts? i am curious as to if this is about providing tools that make the information on social networks transparent, and if so, for whom? for marketers, scientists, politicians etc. more interestingly, who decides what transparency is, and how the results are constructed, validated, and made open to questioning and contestation. this is obviously not talked about at all, there is only a pointer that these researchers are now working together with facebook. on a related note, i am concerned with such studies and their construction of statistical identity or truth. first of all, what counts as race in itself can be very controversial, as was evident from the many points raised in the different emails. quantification of race, as necessary as sometimes that may be for equal opportunity actions or political projects, also re-produces what race is. so, it seems what we have a mix of three things: (1) a construction of race (2) a construction of names and racial order, and (3) social networks and its user "diversity". the result is a study that melts these three elements together. i am just wondering, how such a complex statistical and social matter becomes so smooth that it can be fit onto one page with no open questions and what are ways of questioning the study. i would appreciate any further comments you may have in the direction. and, once again, thank you for all the others, especially with respect to references on race and class on social networks, the topic, regardless of facebooks ability to water it down to some mind turning statistics, remains complex and interesting. s. ***Wherefore art thou r3579x?: anonymized social networks, hidden patterns, and structural steganography. G'day ! The compulsion to 'open up' or > 'share' of oneself is an integral part of interpersonal relationships. EUI Workshop on Online Research Methods
by Jeroen Moes 21 Dec '09

21 Dec '09

Dear all, A while ago, some of us discussed the possibility of organising a workshop on online research methods at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. It now seems likely that such a workshop will indeed be organised in Spring 2010 (exact dates t.b.a.). Since there may be a wider interest among members of this list, I've pasted a small excerpt of the 'notice' that I sent around here at the institute to see whether there is enough 'in-house' interest: ------- The current proposal consists broadly of three different elements: 1. The *implications of the internet and mobile technologies for social scientific research* (i.e. how does this ‘connectedness’ affect social organisation more generally) 2. *Research explicitly on online groups, communities and phenomena* more broadly (either as a standalone project or as an element of a wider study) 3. *Specific methodologies* that aim to *deal with* the ‘online world’ or *take advantage of* the possibilities that these ‘new’ technologies offer for social science research In discussing these different aspects, we are currently considering a number of topics for inclusion into the programme. With regard to *methodological tools*: online survey design (possibilities, advantages, limitations), ‘digital (/virtual) ethnography’, online focus groups and interviews, online social network analysis, using social media for participant/respondent sampling, and applying quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research designs. With regard to the range of *specific topic*s, we are currently considering (among other things): online communities (e.g. diaspora communities and/or 'virtual' communities), ‘weak tie’ social networks, blog(osphere) research, the relationship between 'online/virtual' and 'offline' relations, online governance, and technology and society approaches. ------- If you're interested in participating, or if you have suggestions for the workshop (topics, methods, people, etc.), please just drop me a line at this address or at jeroen.moes(a)eui.eu. Have a good christmas/newyear, Jeroen __________________________________________________________ Jeroen Moes PhD Researcher, Department of Political and Social Sciences European University Institute <http://www.eui.eu/> Via dei Roccettini 9, 50014, San Domenico di Fiesole, Florence, Italy Jeroen.Moes(a)eui.eu | www.jeroenmoes.eu

FW: [ciresearchers] CfP -- Linking the Local with the Global within Community informatics -- Journal of Community Informatics
by Michael Gurstein 21 Dec '09

21 Dec '09

-----Original Message----- From: ciresearchers-owner(a)vancouvercommunity.net [mailto:ciresearchers-owner@vancouvercommunity.net] On Behalf Of Douglas Schuler Sent: Sunday, December 20, 2009 4:14 PM To: communityinformatics(a)vancouvercommunity.net; Ciresearchers Subject: [ciresearchers] Call for Papers -- Linking the Local with the Global within Community informatics -- Journal of Community Informatics Please forward as appropriate. Thanks! Sorry for any duplications. Dear all, a special issue of the Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) will be devoted to ´Linking the Local with the Global within Community informatics`, guest-edited by Liisa Horelli and Doug Schuler. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Journal of Community Informatics: Call for Papers for Special issue on Linking the Local with the Global within Community Informatics Guest editors: Liisa Horelli and Douglas Schuler The Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) is a focal point for the communication of research of interest to a global network of academics, Community Informatics practitioners and national and multi-lateral policy makers. We invite submissions of original, unpublished articles for a forthcoming special edition of the Journal that will focus on Linking the Local with the Global within Community Informatics. We welcome research articles from different disciplines, case studies and notes from the field. All research articles will be double blind peer-reviewed. Insights and analytical perspectives from practitioners and policy makers in the form of notes from the field or case studies are also encouraged. These will not be peer-reviewed. What is Community Informatics? Community informatics ...links economic and social development efforts at the community level with emerging opportunities in such areas as electronic commerce, community and civic networks and telecentres, electronic democracy and online-participation, self-help and virtual health communities, advocacy, cultural enhancement, and e-planning among others. ...is concerned with carving out a sphere and developing strategies for precisely those who are being excluded from this ongoing rush, and enabling these individuals and communities to take advantage of some of the opportunities which the technology is providing. It is also concerned with enhancing civil society and strengthening local communities for self-management and for environmental and economically sustainable development, ensuring that many who might otherwise be excluded are able to take advantage of the enormous opportunities the new technologies are presenting. - Michael Gurstein in Community Informatics: Enabling Communities with Information and Communications Why a special issue on Linking Local with the Global within Community Informatics? Community informatics (CI) is the study and practice of information and communication systems (especially involving networked digital systems) in the community. Regardless of the agreement on the broad definition, there are inherent tensions within the CI community and with the CI perspective itself. The "simple" idea of community is the source of one tension since there are a multiplicity of definitions and usages of the word "community", many of which are semantically loaded or ambiguous. Is, for example, a "virtual community" a real community? Another source of tension is between the local and the global, the focus of this special issue. What's local and what's global? What is their significance in terms of our focus on "community"? How do we define the two terms so that they are meaningful and useful to our work? Perhaps these terms distract us from conceptualizing our enterprise in ways that are more useful? What characterizes phenomena or artifacts as belonging to one or the other (and how do they influence each other)? Interestingly, the community of community informatics researchers, practitioners, and activists itself is part of a new hybridity that blurs local and global. The term glocalization has been coined to focus on the intermixing of local and global influences which are present and active everywhere. Although the phenomenon is not new, it has intensified in recent years due to the Internet, mass communications, mobile telephones, air travel, war, migration, economic interdependence, environmental impacts, and other aspects of 21st century mobilities. But identifying and naming a phenomenon is only the beginning. We must not mistake our use of a new term for understanding. For example, how would glocalization help us understand a network of local communities? The availability of urban and community ICT could allow people to understand the larger impacts of their everyday decisions. It could also enable people to understand and promote not only the particularities of the local but also commonalities of the global, and to engage with the broader global sphere. Consequently, people could become actors who are engaged in the glocal networks of mobile people, goods and information. However, glocal influence or interaction could be directed from the top-down, laterally, or from the bottom-up. CI implicitly embraces the tension between the local and the global. On some level, global and local pit two types of forces against each other. How does CI consider this clash or intermingling of forces? Does it advocate larger barriers, shelters, or hiding places, from these forces or does it inspire or promote the type of collective intelligence that goes beyond "using ICT?" The recent debate on the CI-research list brought up the idea that CI could be used, in addition to the benefit of communities, to the benefit of global communities. This debate raised arguments that both supported and questioned the claim. On the one hand, there is the risk that glocalisation can dilute (and downgrade) the "community" to some larger (and less individually significant) whole. In that case, it may be important to preserve the 'local' as it maintains the community's domains of control and power over the circumstances that impacts it. It can be reasoned that greater globality essentially removes self-control and self-governance. On the other hand, glocalisation provides new strategic options for movements who seek resources and support far beyond national boundaries, such as the Chiapas, in Mexico. The global opportunities even begin to play part in the way local activists frame the issues they raise locally. Thus, the "outside world" affects communities, but communities exert forces outwards as well. Local communities can also share experiences and strategies, thus mutually strengthening each other. We need to figure out, how we are going to make the glocal or translocal connections work most effectively. This special issue is intended to help surface the opportunities, challenges, and risks around this theme. These issues give rise to a large number of research questions. Some of these are listed below but there are many yet to be identified and researched. What processes underlie the forces of globalization? Which are forces of localization? How are people affected by each? How do these forces originate, diffuse, and make their effects felt? Do these forces affect all communities equally or are gender, ethnicity, or other features significant factors? And what should CI researchers / practitioners do in relation to those forces? Is the issue trying to help communities use ICT more effectively, or is it working in a general way to develop communication systems that will help local communities intelligently address the problems that they (and the rest of the world) face? In some situations, for example, this means helping to develop collective problem-solving tools so people can more effectively resist oppression or fight the status quo. Or should their inhabitants be full citizens of the world with the rights and responsibilities that accompany that status? How can we characterize the new diversity of global / local relationships? What patterns exist? In what ways might (hyper?) localism breed parochialism and isolationism? Can we embrace CI without unnecessarily valorizing the local community? What are the opportunities (and what should the limits be) to our research and activism on behalf of and with the local community? Because CI is a brand new field of research and practice we have the rare opportunity to define our field. Is it useful or even possible to conceptualize a social enterprise that is relevant today without explicitly acknowledging climate change, environmental degradation, oppression, poverty, human rights, war and militarism, and other "global" problems that face us all, however indirectly. How should these manifest "global" concerns be factored into our enterprise? And how does the role of information and communication, the foundations of our enterprise, change if at all the way we answer these questions? This positioning of our enquiry at such a point should enable a new set of opportunities. CI integrates research and engagement. So its view of localism and globalism needs to be informed through those perspectives. We invite authors to submit in English both full articles for peer-review, as well as short pieces on specific experiences and/or policy and regulatory issues, to be reviewed by the guest editors. I know danah, and at least my understanding of her work, particularly in talking about Facebook vs. MySpace is that she particularly looks at class differences in the two sites, although clearly race and education are clearly intertwined with class. As danah as well as Eszter Hargittai have found, there are differences between the two site in terms of race, class and education: both real differences in terms of characteristics of their users and perceived differences. For instance, Hispanics are significantly more likely to use MySpace and Asians are significantly less likely to use MySpace; African Americans and nonHispanic whites are similar in amount of Facebook and MySpace use so it is certainly not a simple black as white issue. Also, users of MySpace are more likely to come from lowerclass households. These class differences are manifested in discussion between peers (e.g. Facebook people sometimes look down on MySpace users) and certainly perceptions of the two sites by the elite. Facebook is perceived as THE social network site because its users tend to look more like elites in media, education etc. even though the audience size of the two sites is not as large as media reports would suggest. This has some real consequences. The media all but ignore MySpace, and groups that recruit through social networking (e.g. businesses and schools) concentrate on Facebook so that the lower class and Hispanics are less likely to receive these recruiting attempts from business and education . This is an oversimplification of their work, but danah and Eszter, I hope I have the gist of it. Message-ID: <111a48f00912181858q666f6c9bn4a787a9d647956d6(a)mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 I read it as a polite reply to (the hype over) danah boyd's blog post on the differences between MySpace & Facebook: boyd herself never reduced the argument to black vs. whites, but that's the reading everybody had. They had to reply to it, and they wisely avoided to stirr up more flames at the time (their silence was a good pointer that the intuition was onto something, as this study indicates). Now that the result is far less ?scandal prone? they closed the question with an interesting approach. But the intended reader was the science-skiming media, hence the rather sound methodolocial base, but the not so academic presentation of the results: with some work, they could have published somethign based on that for, say, ICWSM, but they haven't (so far). Doing so, they also don't have to justify their use of too much, too personal data ? the kind no IRB would let any academic handle. By the way, I'd love to have some academic lobbying from you guys to ask Facebook for some run time on that database: they have gold in their hands to answer so many questions ? and we are all interested not in detailed data, but the statistical results. If we can negociate that they let us run some scripts, provided those can't possibly reveal any personal information, won't run against their corporate interest, and could help social science, that would be amazing. Maybe some Ivy League universities already pay for that. That offer would lead to lots of interesting discussion on what makes Facebook users different from the general Internet users, way more then what they can have internally?something valuable for the company. About doing the same study abroad: Outside of Nothern America there are no universal, easy to study, significant social class markers; where race carries a similar stigma as it does in the US, such studies are often prohibited. I have no doubt Facebook uses similar approaches for marketing purposes, but any details would be commercially invaluable, and the insights probably as ?dull? as what they are in the US after a few years of significant presence. ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 19 Dec 2009 09:19:41 +0000 From: David M. Berry <D.M.Berry(a)swansea.ac.uk> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] CFP Workshop: The Computational Turn Message-ID: <BA6DA4C5-608D-4EDF-8A2D-47B34684F0F7(a)swansea.ac.uk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed; delsp=yes The Computational Turn in Arts and Humanities ====================================== SWANSEA UNIVERSITY 9TH MARCH 2010 David Berry, Department of Political and Cultural Studies, Swansea University. d.m.berry(a)swansea.ac.uk The application of new computational techniques and visualisation technologies in the Arts & Humanities are resulting in new approaches and methodologies for the study of traditional and new corpuses of Arts and Humanities materials. This new 'computation turn' takes the methods and techniques from computer science to create new ways of distant and close readings of texts (e.g. Moretti). This one-day workshop aims to discuss the implications and applications of what Lev Manovich has called 'Cultural Analytics' and the question of finding patterns using algorthmic techniques. Some of the most startling approaches transform understandings of texts by use of network analysis (e.g. graph theory), database/XML encodings (which flatten structures), or merely provide new quantitative techniques for looking at various media forms, such as media and film, and (re)presenting them visually, aurally or haptically. Within this field there are important debates about the contrast between narrative against database techniques, pattern-matching versus hermeneutic reading, and the statistical paradigm (using a sample) versus the data mining paradigm. Additionally, new forms of collaboration within the Arts and Humanities are emerging which use team-based approaches as opposed to the traditional lone-scholar. This requires the ability to create and manage modular Arts and Humanities research teams through the organisational structures provided by technology and digital communications (e.g. Big Humanities), together with techniques for collaborating in an interdisciplinary way with other disciplines such as computer science (e.g. hard interdisciplinarity versus soft interdisciplinarity). Papers are encouraged in the following areas: - Distant versus Close Reading - Database Structure versus Argument - Data mining/Text mining/Patterns - Pattern as a new epistemological object - Hermeneutics and the Data Stream - Geospatial techniques - Big Humanities - Digital Humanities versus Traditional Humanities - Tool Building - Free Culture/Open Source Arts and Humanities - Collaboration, Assemblages and Alliances - Language and Code (software studies) - Philosophical and theoretical reflections on the computational turn Participation Requirements Workshop participants are requested to submit a position paper about the computational turn in Arts and Humanities, philosophical/ theoretical reflections on the computational turn, research focus or research questions related to computational approaches, proposals for academic practice with algorithmic/visualisation techniques, proposals for new research methods with regard to Arts and Humanities or specific case studies (if applicable) and findings to date. Position papers will be published in a workshop PDF and website for discussion and some of the participants will be invited to present their paper at the workshop. Please ensure you put 'The Computational Turn' in the subject line of the email submission.
