e-Youth Balancing between opportunities and risks? Multidisciplinary conference May 27th & 28th2010 Antwerp, Belgium UCSIA and the University of Antwerp are pleased to announce the organisation of a two-day international, multidisciplinary conference on children, adolescents & ICT. We welcome a broad audience including researchers, educators, students, policy makers, NGO and industry representatives to share research results and discuss policy and educational issues about children's and adolescents' use of information and communication technologies. The conference will focus on national and international research dealing with social, cultural, economic, legal, psychological and ethical issues regarding youngsters' uses of different internet applications and mobile telephony. Contributions on both the multiple opportunities offered by technologies and on the (new) risks youngsters are confronted with are welcomed. Research and initiatives concerning the educational and mediating role of parents and educators will be discussed too. The conference will also provide a forum for good practices of sensitizing or educational campaigns. Oral presentations, posters and demonstrations can be submitted about -but not limited to- the following issues: 1. Youngsters and ICT: a heterogeneous group (gap in access and competences, social differences and distributive (in-justice) 2. Youngsters and ICT: developmental changes and related needs (social and identity needs, entertainment and information needs) 3. Youngsters and ICT: a vulnerable (target) group? (electronic marketing, riskful contacts) 4. Youngsters and ICT: awareness, protection and empowerment 5. Youngsters and ICT: ethical and legal issues (adapting research methods, ethical issues, legislation, self- and co-regulation Guidelines for submission: The conference will be composed of two types of contributions: 1. Just a reminder that the following CfP is still open, with full papers due Feb. 2010. Please feel free to forward to anyone who may be interested e. ~ The social networking emerging online is now seen as one of the defining characteristics of Web 2.0 and beyond. From virtual worlds to microblogging, individuals and groups are forming diverse and sometimes apparently novel ways of building and maintaining social bonds. These mediated exchanges between individuals and groups who may never physically meet challenge our current understandings of friendship, communication, and belonging. For communication and public relations scholars and practitioners, such interactions pose a number of signification questions. How do researchers explore these nebulous social connections people forge in online spaces? How do we re-evaluate what it means to be an individual and part of a group in this context? Do these new channels of communication change the way we present ourselves and our ideas? This special edition seeks papers which discuss and explore ways in which to approach, study, and account for the diversity of online social experience, particularly in regard to communication practice and issues of public relations. Possible topics include: * methodological frameworks for studying online social behaviours * theory building (normative or critical) regarding the social web as part of communications or public relations practice * ways of conceptualizing the online self and society, such as; performance, identity, network theory, and their implications for organisational communication and public relations * issues and ethics in online data collection on social networking sites * case studies exploring the impact of multimodal (online/ offline) social ties in research * opinon pieces on using social networks in public relations * critically informed speculation on the future of communication practice in social media (beyond ‘Web3’) * multimedia submissions on a related topic Papers are welcome from all disciplinary areas. Full papers will be due by Friday 5th of February, 2010 and will be peer reviewed. Academic papers should be 5,000 words and practitioner papers between 2,500-3,000 words maximum. Dear colleagues, my working paper dealing with the question "Cyberscience 2.0 or 1.2? The Web 2.0 and Science" has just appeared: http://epub.oeaw.ac.at/ita/ita-manuscript/ita_09_02.pdf It is written in German though. I am working on an English version, the preliminary abstract reads: Author: Michael Nentwich Title: Cyberscience 2.0 or 1.2? Web 2.0 and Science Keywords: Cyberscience, Web 2.0, social media, Twitter, Blogs, Wikipedia, Second Life, social bookmarking, social tagging Abstract: This contribution focuses on the possible impact of Web 2.0 on science and research. In the introduction, I describe the notions "Cyberscience" and "Web 2.0" and their relation to each other. In the main part, I analyse typical Web 2.0 services from the perspective of use in academia: social network services, virtual worlds, Wikipedia, (micro-)blogging and social tagging. On this basis I ask the question how functional Web 2.0 tools would be for research praxis and which potential consequences of their hypothetical universal usage we may have to expect. I come to a cautious and reserved conclusion: Given the early stage of usage - many services only exist for less than three years and are not fully discovered by scientists - an assessment of the potentials is barely feasible. However, there are a few weighty arguments that speak against rapid diffusion (lack of time, of incentives, low benefit expectations etc.). While the first steps on the path of developing cyberscience further have been taken, the potential impact on science seem not to go beyond what has already been discussed in advance of the Web 2.0 hype. Using the software jargon, Web 2.0 lets us expect an "update to Cyberscience 1.2", rather than a "new release to Cyberscience 2.0". This increased global access, however, brings with it a variety of new conditions and concerns that could markedly affect international interactions in online environments. Differences in language, cultural communication expectations, laws, and software standards are but some of the factors individuals need to consider when using online media to interact with individuals from different countries and cultures.
