Dear all! Currently I'm working on my PhD thesis and would be really grateful if you could advise me some studies of Web 2.0 which use social systems theory. Most of what I found is in German and the sources in English are extremely limited. Thanks, Evgeniya Boklage

CfP (deadline extended): From Face to Facebook: performing (im)politeness in social media environments (SymPol 2010, Basel)
by Cornelius Puschmann 04 Dec '09

04 Dec '09

Dear colleagues, apologies for cross-posting. Please allow me to inform you that the deadline for the session outlined below has been extended to *December 15th*. * ### *From Face to Facebook: performing (im)politeness in social media environments Panel session at the 5th International Symposium on Politeness, 30 June - 2 July 2010, Basel, Switzerland (http://www.sympol.unibas.ch/) Theresa Heyd (University of Pennsylvania, USA), Cornelius Puschmann (Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany) In its earliest days, politeness theory set out to identify “universals in language use” (Brown and Levinson 1978). Such claims to universality were later contested, in particular with regard to cultural variation (e.g. Wierzbicka 1991): norms of appropriateness, concepts of face and other sociopragmatic aspects are nowadays accepted to be (somewhat) culture-specific. In the light of such 'variationist' tendencies, it may be asked whether politeness and self-presentation are also medium- and technology-specific. Are there new politeness paradigms in online communication, especially in its most recent forms? Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr are “technologies of the self” (Foucault) where people do things with words in a very literal sense. Constructing a digital self via video, images and still most prominently language ("meforming"; Naaman et al. 2009) and negotiating it in exchanges with other users are central activities in social media formats. While facework could previously be classified unambiguously in terms of linguistic and non-linguistic actions, the digitally constructed self also "acts" via language when symbolically engaging in interpersonal activities such as liking, poking, friending, following, banning and muting. These linguistic quasi-actions replace the means which are available offline to indicate stance and manage impressions and therefore fulfill an important function. In a larger sense, it appears that the concept of “face” itself has taken on a new meaning in digital social media that is simultaneously more encompassing and more important: establishing and negotiating an online identity has become one of the central activities of Internet users. We particularly invite contributions on the following issues: * Constructing and maintaining face in social media * Performative and metacommunicative acts in social media * Consequences and implications of online self exposure: identity management, identity safety, privacy vs. exposure * Performing face in social media vs. Web 1.0 and pre-digital settings * The mitigation of face in online/offline interactions. This panel focuses on the related aspects of self-presentation and symbolic actions as components of digital face management. We welcome contributions addressing all forms of online communication; studies regarding more recent social media are especially welcome. Both theory-building and data-driven contributions are of interest. Abstracts (500 words max.) should be submitted by *December 15, 2009*. Environmental Twitter
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 03 Dec '09

03 Dec '09

Colleagues/ !!! A Most Excellent Article / A Model For Other Subject Twitter Articles !!! /Gerry Bytes of Note - Environmental Twitter / George E. Clark / Environment / September-October / 2009 Twitter, the microblogging Web site that enables users to post unlimited messages of 140 characters or less, became the fastest-growing Internet communication tool earlier this year, according to Nielsen Online. [snip] As with any general broadcast communication tool, Twitter can provide a helpful service to those with an interest in environmental and sustainability issues. [snip] Any individual or organization representative can sign up for a free account. However, no account is needed to search all public Twitter streams ... A search can provide realtime insight into a mixture of both public opinion and public relations spin on environmental issues. The advanced search features of these sites can be used to search specific Twitter fields, such as location, bio, and names mentioned. The usefulness of analyzing real-time data of this kind may be hard to imagine for those new to Twitter and may not yet be realized for environment-specific uses. [snip] [snip] While few Twitter searchers may be interested in conducting sophisticated analyses of tweets, many will want to see what specific individuals or organizations are saying. [snip] When starting out as an active Twitter user, or when beginning to decipher tweets as a passive Twitter searcher or follower, it helps to develop a basic Twitter vocabulary. Writer and social media consultant Greg Pincus presents a simple and useful list ... . [snip] Besides the EPA, environment- and sustainability-related U.S. agencies on Twitter include the National Park Service (@NatlParkService), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (@CDCemergency), and FEMA (@femainfocus). The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration uses Twitter for a number of applications, including educating students about oceans (@oceanexplorer). Govtwit.com is a directory of government and related Twitter users. Internationally, the United Nations Environmental Programme has begun an active Twitter program, @UNEPandYou, as has the World Health Organization, @whonews. Environmental nongovernmental organizations using Twitter include the International Union for Conservation of Nature (@IUCN), Earthwatch (@tweettheheat), Greenpeace (@greenpeaceusa), The Nature Conservancy (@nature_org), the World Resources Institute (@worldresources), and the World Wildlife Fund (@WWFUS). Twitter also provides a forum for practitioners in particular academic and policy fields and news organizations covering specialized topics. In climate, for example, Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist and lead author of the U.S. Global Change Research Program report, Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States, tweets as @KatharineHayhoe. Richard Klein, a climate policy analyst for the Stockholm Environment Institute and a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has begun tweeting as @rjtklein. Earth Negotiations Bulletin, a news service on multilateral environmental negotiations, used Twitter to post news from the recent United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change talks in Bonn, Germany, as @enbclimate. [snip] Twitter is but one of a number of emerging social media, many of which already affect environmental work. Terri Willard (@taikod) of the International Institute for Sustainable Development has written a briefing paper, "Social Networking and Governance for Sustainable Development" that places Twitter inside a much larger context. Willard posits three key technologies that enable the "social web" and make it a potential force for sustainability: the prevalence of handheld computing and communication devices; the ease with which individuals can post, find, and comment on each other's videos, images, words, and other content; and the potential of social networking sites, including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. Environmental subject librarians are a good starting point for new resources to explore on the Web, in Twitter, and in the evolving social information setting more broadly. Some use Twitter to connect with a broad constituency. Anne Less, a librarian with the U.S. Green Building Council, tweets using the handle @alessismore. Lenora A. Oftedahl, a librarian with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, tweets as @StreamNetLib. Anne Moser is head librarian and head Tweeter at Wisconsin's Water Library (@WiscWaterLib). Internet research ethics controlled vocabulary: CIPR-UWM
by hviz0002＠umn.edu 03 Dec '09

Dearest esteemed colleagues, Hello from Milwaukee! Do you all miss us already? Hopefully you all recovered nicely... Thanks again for an awesome conference, and were looking forward to seeing all of you next year! And now, the real purpose of this message. Here at the Center for Information Policy Research (CIPR) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), we are constructing an Internet research ethics digital library that will include, amongst other things, several (hundred?) articles related to the topic of you guessed it Internet research ethics. We would like to create a controlled vocabulary for use in our metadata, and as I began this project, that little critical mindset crept in and I started to wonder what exactly gave me the authority to decide how all of you would be searching for information. Therefore: Im putting the call out to you. Im not looking for specific terms or words (that will be the next phase!), but Id like to get an idea of how people search for information regarding Internet research and more specifically Internet research ethics. What are some issues/concerns you have had when searching for this type of literature? What approaches might you suggest in a controlled vocabulary of this subject? And so on and so on If you could email me at ehvizdak(a)uwm.edu sometime in the next two weeks, I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much for your contribution to this project! Erin Hvizdak -- Erin Hvizdak, MLIS Candidate School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Research Assistant, Center for Information Policy Research (CIPR) Project Assistant, UWM Graduate School

NEW PAPER FROM THE CENTRE FOR INTERNET RESEARCH
by Brügger Niels 03 Dec '09

Website Analysis. Elements of a conceptual architecture by Niels Brügger, 56 pages, The Centre for Internet Research, Aarhus Abstract "On the basis of an introductory discussion of interactivity, hypertextuality and multimediality, this text sets out, on the one hand, to ask what a website is as an object of study, and, on the other, to propose some elements of a conceptual architecture which may enable us to approach this question and to grasp the website analytically. It is argued that website analysis may address the following three analytical objects: the media environment (Internet and web), the textual environment (desktop, windows, web browser, and ancillary software), and finally, the textuality, which is to say, the textual elements which in a strict sense constitute the website as a textual phenomenon. The main focus is on the textual elements, their characteristics and their interrelations, and special attention is drawn to the forms and the functions of the website’s paratexts, i.e. the small texts located at the boundaries of the main text (e.g. headings, lists, breadcrumb paths, drop-down menus, and search terms entered into a search field)."
