Linda--That is a very interesting question. I have taught an introduction to social media course I created for a few years now for the MA Media Studies program at The New School. I have found that combining chapters from a few of the best books together right now seems to work very well. Here is what I have used or still do: * Here Comes Everybody, Clay Shirky (key text) * The Wealth of Networks, Yochai Benkler (theory and background) * Everything is Miscellaneous, David Weinberger (tagging and knowledge) * Infotopia, Sunstein (Wisdom of Crowds) * Ambiant Findability, Peter Morville (searching and finding) * Smart Mobs, Howard Rheingold (collective behavior) * We the Media, Dan Gilmore (impact on news, journalism, info dissemination) And then of course there are about 30-50 articles, print and Web based assigned from authors like dana boyd, Jay Rosen, and many others... Apologies for cross-posting ____________________________________________ POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN SECURITY/PRIVACY STUDIES TEMPLE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND THEATER, PHILADELPHIA PA, USA. As part of an international initiative undertaken with the support of the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme, Temple University is offering a 1 year, post-doctoral position in security/privacy studies with a target start date of January 1, 2010 at the earliest; however, this is flexible dependent on the selected candidate’s availability. The selected post-doctoral fellow, along with the Project Director, will be responsible for administering a project on “Privacy Awareness through Branding of Security Organisations” (PATS) in cooperation with institutions in Germany, the UK, Finland, Israel, Poland, and the United States. Project Summary and Responsibilities: Temple University’s role in the project will be to increase the knowledge of existing symbolic representation of security agencies and security functions of private industry in the U.S and in the other partner countries. Symbolic representations are seen as one of the main sorts of communication between security organizations, industry, and citizens as members of the public. This project will research the specific significance of signs and labels in order to reconstruct security practices – and self-understanding of security agencies – through a set of cultural categories. The methodology will include content and discourse analysis, ethnographic fieldwork, and photographic techniques. The selected candidate should be skilled in qualitative and ethnographic methods and will oversee data collection (1) at select security conferences that are open to the public; (2) through systematic coding of privacy symbols and discourses on web pages, brochures, and in security trade publications; and (3) through photographic representations of security and privacy protection in public places. The post-doctoral researcher along with the director will also be responsible for 1) coordinating with partner countries other components of the research project managed by partner researcher, 2) hosting an international workshop on security and privacy in Philadelphia 3) attending project meetings hosted at partner countries 4) hosting a workshop to improve privacy awareness among security agencies. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes full fringe and health benefits. All travel related to research, workshops and project meetings is covered by the Seventh Framework Programme funding. Qualifications: Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in Communication or a field related to security/privacy studies. Candidates with pending degrees who will have successfully defended their dissertations by the position start date will also be considered. In addition, applicants must have relevant expertise in one or more of the following subjects/methodologies: security/privacy studies, visual rhetoric, rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis, narrative analysis, media analysis and qualitative methods. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The Machine Translation Marathon 2010, organised by the National Centre for Language Technology and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation at Dublin City University on behalf of the EuroMatrixPlus Consortium, is the fourth in a series of MT Marathons organised by the EU EuroMatrix and EuroMatrixPlus research projects on Machine Translation. The EuroMatrixPlus consortium invites researchers, developers, students, and users of machine translation for participation. The event will feature • Winter School classes on current methods in statistical MT with hands-on lab sessions (for novices and beginners) • Research showcase (invited talks by leading researchers) • Presentation of new open source tools for MT (separate call for papers will follow) • Work in small group on implementing new methods and features to improve open source MT tools (for more advanced researchers and developers) Where: Dublin City University, Ireland When: January 25-30, 2010 How: On-line Registration How much: Attendance is free of charge, but limited. SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS OPEN SOURCE TOOLS FOR MACHINE TRANSLATION The Fourth Machine Translation Marathon, which will take place 25–30 January 2010 in Dublin, Ireland, is hosting an Open Source Convention to advance the state of the art in machine translation. The MT Marathon is organised by the National Centre for Language Technology and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation at Dublin City University on behalf of the EuroMatrixPlus Consortium. We invite developers of open source tools to present their work and submit a paper of up to 10 pages that (a) describes the underlying methodology and (b) includes instructions how to use the tools. We are looking for stand-alone tools and extensions of existing tools, such as the Moses open source systems. Call for Papers/Presentations Digital Diasporas: Distances, Cultures, Languages a seminar to be held at ACLA 2010, April 1-4, New Orleans, La. Despite the continued existence of the book, the newspaper, and the scholarly journal, digital humanists are confronted with the sneaking suspicion that the internet is somehow different, a vast new space that mixes up our identities, our politics, and our languages. Networked texts give comparative literature the opportunity to ask: what exactly are we comparing? What kind of a diaspora is it when we can simultaneously be here, there, everywhere, and nowhere? Who is spreading out, where are they spreading to and from, and what might organize their itineraries? Finally, how do these texts, spaces, subjects, movements, and cultures coexist with and modify earlier media regimes? This seminar will address aspects of internet culture that cross, crush, redefine, and/or reinforce borders; that eradicate and/or extend notions of distance; that legitimate, destabilize, and/or invent linguistic practices. Potential topics include (but are certainly not limited to) blogs, Twitter feeds, YouTube, Facebook, SMS and mobile telephony, listservs, MMORPGs, lurkers, activists, hacking, art, affinity groups, citizenship, affect, nationality, gender, race, class, geographies, histories, literacies. Im basically interested in all forms of recent academic research on this, which actually provide some numbers, not just mentionings of ?rule of thumbs? or second-hand information. ? Particularly, I?d love to know if anyone has researched how many people? ?just? read status updates and do NOT comment, retweet, ?Like? them etc on sites like Facebook or Twitter. (I know it?s a tricky question and perhaps not very useful to make the distinction, since most are likely to have commented or ?liked? at some point, but then again I surmise some people are more likely to do it on a more regularly basis than others, and some are very rarely active??) What I have found so far: A 2008 OfCom report in their UK survey results reports that ?40% looks at other people?s sites (eg. SNS profiles) without leaving messages?, but does not deal with ?passivity? otherwise. A Sysomos survey of Twitter users claims to have found that 21% of people with Twitter-accounts have never tweeted (so they must be ?passive? readers of other people?s tweets?). I know of? Jenny Preece?s early work on lurkers, and Jose Van Dijck in her 2009 paper ?Users like you? Theorizing agency in user-generated content? mentions a Forrester report from 2007 ?Mapping Participation in Activities? (which you have to pay for), talking of 33% of users being passive spectators (of videos, blogs etc) and 52% ?inactives?. An OECD 2007 report ?Participative Web: User-Generated content? (according to Dijck) says more than 80% are passive recipients of content. All in all not much knowledge to go by, and mostly just numbers. And then there?s the 1/10/89 % meme, but how substantial is it: www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2006/jul/20/guardianweeklytechnologysection2 I've perused Danah Boyd?s extensive list on social network research, but at least judging from the titles of articles listed there & still unknown to me, ?passive?
