3Cmedia: Journal of Community, Citizen’s and Third Sector Media Making Links through Digital Storytelling Issue 5 (October) 2009 ONLINE NOW! http://www.cbonline.org.au/3cmedia/ This issue of the Journal of Community, Citizen’s and Third Sector Media and Communication (3CMedia) provides important insights into how a particular form of community-based digital media practice is being used in a variety of contexts to facilitate social participation through storytelling and creative expression. Papers are based on selected presentations given at the 5th annual Making Links conference, held at The University of Melbourne from 11th to 13th November, 2008. Aneta Podkalicka and Jonathan Staley report on the development, operation and management of a youth media program, YouthWorx Media and how digital storytelling is being used in conjunction with community radio to engage disadvantaged young people. Peta-Marie Standley and her colleagues introduce The Traditional Knowledge Revival Pathways (TKRP), an Indigenous-owned community, training and environmental consultancy, that uses new media tools including digital storytelling techniques to reconnect people to place and to demonstrate the value of the ancient Indigenous knowledge system in providing solutions to issues of contemporary concern. Natalie Davey and Samia Goudie report on the Hope Vale – Pelican project. This partnership between the Elders of Hope Vale, and Pelican Expeditions, a marine research and education service provider aims to promote social and emotional wellbeing and caring for country. In 2007 and 2008 a digital storytelling media camp was embedded into the project and extraordinary stories were produced. Throughout 2009 the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) collaborated with individuals and Indigenous communities across Queensland in an initiative that used digital storytelling to capture responses to the Apology made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Jean Burgess and Helen Klaebe report on the collaborative process used to capture responses from Brisbane-based individuals. The Australian Centre for the Moving Image is one of the few cultural institutions of its kind worldwide. Helen Simondson charts the development of the Digital Storytelling program at ACMI. About 3CMedia and the Making Links issue 3CMedia is a scholarly e-journal which aims to provide a forum for promoting, reporting and debating research in community-based, citizen's and 'third sector' media and culture. 3CMedia is published by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia and access to the journal is free of charge. Contributions covering a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, research methods and topics are welcome. All papers published in 3CMedia are subject to a process of blind peer review and many are based upon papers presented in the academic stream of the Community Broadcasting Association's Annual Conference or the annual Making Links conference. Making Links (see also www.makinglinks.org.au) is a conference that seeks to engage interested people, organisations and groups working at the intersection of social action and information technology, including community workers, educators, trainers, non-profit organisations, people who work with marginalised groups, activists and researchers. Position Announcement Department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media Temple University Non Tenure Track position in Media Studies & Production The department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media (BTMM) at Temple University invites applications for a 1 year non-tenure track position to begin in fall 2010. The ideal candidate for this position will be able teach one or more of the department´s large skill related lecture courses (Introduction to Media Technology, The Future of Your TV, or Principles of Writing for the Media), and will be experienced in media writing, and media platforms such as broadcast, online, or corporate media. In addition, depending on their qualifications, the NTT would be able to teach courses in the department´s production curriculum including television production, editing, and/or web design. The person hired will also work with other faculty on curriculum and technology planning. The department has approximately 700 majors who study audio, video and electronic media production; management of media institutions; and social and psychological functions, processes and effects of media. It offers a master's degree and contributes to an inter-departmental doctoral program in Mass Media and Communication. BTMM is one of six departments in a large, diverse and dynamic School of Communications and Theater. Cultural diversity is addressed in terms of dialogue, dynamics, and the new specific challenges it may pose for languages, educational systems, news and entertainment media and the business world. Based on the analysis of recent initiatives, concrete examples, case studies and successful practices, this report advances a number of pathways worth exploring for renewing development strategies in favour of poverty eradication, environmental action and sustainable, human-centred governance. The World Report aims to address the manifold aspects of cultural diversity, critically review common notions and assumptions, and propose policy-oriented recommendations on topics as diverse as identities and dialogue, the future of languages and intercultural education, media pluralism and cultural industries, the business world, local knowledge, biodiversity, sustainable development, governance and human rights. A renewed discussion of cultural diversity – the promotion and protection of which are supported by an array of normative instruments – is timely in these times of crisis. The impacts of globalization (and increasing urbanization and migration) are challenging our very understanding of cultures and identities. In this sense, cultural diversity is a much more complex phenomenon than it initially appears, as are the relationships between globalization and cultural diversity. As these are facts with which we must contend, it is of utmost importance today to create the conditions upon which cultural diversity can become the means for ensuring dialogue and peaceful co-existence, and sustainable and fruitful development. While the promotion of cultural diversity has taken on increasing visibility on the international scene, it often continues to be perceived as a threat to the cohesion of increasingly diversified societies. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN SCHOOL OF SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION The new School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University Tempe Campus invites applications for a full time, tenure track assistant or associate professor to begin August 2010. The successful candidate will join the faculty of the School of Social Transformation and will have a joint appointment in two of the school’s faculties: African and African American Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, Justice and Social Inquiry, and Women and Gender Studies. The school seeks a candidate whose research focuses primarily on processes of social change or social transformation, engages intersectional, transdisciplinary research, and explores global and local interconnections. The candidate will contribute to the development of diverse new degrees and certificates. Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. by August 2010 in a relevant field such as: African and African American studies, Asian American/Pacific Islander studies, cultural anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, geography, history, justice studies, literature, political science, sociology, women’s studies; ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and collaborative setting; and a demonstrated record of scholarly achievement, including research and teaching, in the study of social change and transformation.
