Hello Sahat, >> I did a similar study with virtual worlds using a faceted classification approach. What are the facets that you are using? Are you using them to compare to other social platforms? Indeed, what I am trying to understand the diversity of these platforms (so as to understand why some of them work in some contexts and others in other contexts). Seeking conference panel participants
by Jessica L. Beyer 24 Nov '09

24 Nov '09

Hello AoIR! I am looking for one or two law and society scholars to participate in a panel about religion, law, and technology for the 2010 Law and Society Association Annual Conference (Chicago, 27-30 May). The panel is being organized by myself and Iza Hussin (UMass-Amherst). We are hoping to bring together people interested in beginning a generative conversation about law, religion, society, and technology. The impetus is an ongoing research project to understand the effect of ICTs on the balance between state authority and religious authority as well as the scope of religious authority over local communities. We are hoping there are other people out there interested in the same intersection of topics-—but welcome more broadly related work as well. The (rough!) panel proposal is: Law and technology studies have traditionally concerned dispute resolution, the interaction between the idiosyncrasies of online world and offline legal institutions, the regulation of the internet, and e-governance. Our panel attempts to expand the field of law and technology to include questions of the ways in which online communities are changing the state-society relationship and challenging legal institutions across geographical contexts. With a particular focus on the Muslim world, we examine disruptions in carefully crafted balances between state authorities and other societal actors, such as religious legal authorities. Also, we focus on the ways in which the online social world is shaping power negotiations between different societal actors. We additionally interrogate the often used dichotomy off the “online” and “offline”— instead focusing how the online world weakens, reinforces, and expands community boundaries and challenges state authority. The ! panel is an attempt to carve out a new direction of research that is theoretically engaged with the law and society paradigm but builds bridges between traditional disciplines. Please email me with any questions. If you are interested in participating, please send me a brief outline of your project. Or, if you aren’t interested in participating, but have any references or people you think we should know about, send an email! All and any help is very welcome. Thank you in advance, Jessica --------------------------------------- Jessica L. Categorisation/taxonomy of online social systems?
by NABETH Thierry 24 Nov '09

24 Nov '09

Dear all, I have been searching without success a categorisation / toxonomy of online social systems. I have of course been searching the web but also Science Direct. For instance blogs, wikis, microbloging, OSN, etc. function differently, and have a different role in the web 2.0. Actually, you can even consider that a web 2.0 solution would be able to combine different mechanisms. Are you aware of any paper / theory proposing such as categorisation? Note: Several papers (including one which I am the coauthor) provide an inventory and a short description of the different types of systems (for instance in education science Procedia in 2009 has a couple of them, and there is a recent report from IPTS Sevilla about usage of Learning 2.0), but they do not really try to make a categorisation in order to compare their characteristics. Thanks in advance for references you may be aware of something. Any research on ICT and child trafficking and exploitation?
by Stefano Kluzer 24 Nov '09

24 Nov '09

Save the Children and other partners are developing a research and awareness project funded by the European Commission on the use of ICT (social networking services, mobile phones and others) in child trafficking and exploitation: to recruit children and teenagers, often transfer them from their home country to somewhere else, and exploit them in sexual, work and illegal activities. Is anyone aware of research done in this field? Especially (but not necessarily) in Europe? Thanks a lot Stefano Kluzer

Course on digital media literacy or intro to digital media
by Tery G 23 Nov '09

23 Nov '09

Hi all, We're looking at reworking our introductory course in digital media. The course is designed for freshmen who will major in Media Arts or minor in Digital Media Arts. I've never found a good text for this class, so we work from articles, and sometimes readings from blogs. Does your school offer a course like this? If so, would you be willing to share ideas about what you cover? If people prefer to contact me off-list, I'll summarize and post back to the list. Thanks, Tery Griffin
