Emerging Mobile Technologies for K-12 Classrooms Chat | September 3 2009 | 11 AM Eastern |
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 26 Aug '09

26 Aug '09

Colleagues/ A Free Chat On A Major Initiative ! /Gerry Because of their low cost and ubiquity, an increasing number of educators are considering the use of mobile devices, such as cellphones, netbooks, GPS systems, digital recorders, and MP3 players, in the classroom. When harnessed properly, supporters say, these devices can open up new educational opportunities for students. But some critics feel such devices are more of a distraction or annoyance than a learning tool. Our guests will discuss which mobile technologies are best for the classroom, when they should or should not be used, and which emerging mobile technologies will have a significant impact on K-12 education. Guests > Shawn Gross, the project director for Project K-Nect, an initiative that aims to help at-risk students increase their math skills through smartphones Judy Brown, a mobile learning analyst and the curator of mLearnopedia.com, a Web site of resources for educational mobile technologies Katie Ash, staff writer, Education Week and Digital Directions, will moderate this chat. 26 Aug '09

Hi all, I'm conducting a short survey for users of Twitter as part of my PhD research into privacy and social interaction. Currently, I aim to determine linguistic differences between those that have open vs. closed Twitter accounts. So... If anybody uses Twitter and has, literally, a spare 4-5 mins, please go to [1]https://www.survey.bath.ac.uk/closedtweets Kind Regards Dave -- David Houghton PhD Candidate, Information, Decisions & Operations, School of Management, University of Bath. Final reminder CFP
by Mark D. Johns 25 Aug '09

25 Aug '09

Call For Submissions Symbolic Interaction, a peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and the University of California Press, invites submissions for a special issue dedicated to the application of symbolic interactionism to internet research. Erving Goffman's concept of "the presentation of self" has become foundational to much scholarly understanding of online identity in chat, email, game environments, blogs, and social networks. Yet other aspects of the rich tradition of symbolic interaction -- including other concepts developed by Goffman -- have been largely ignored by internet researchers. For this special issue, we welcome a broad range of approaches to studying computer-mediated interactions between individuals and within communities online, that utilize other lines of thought by Goffman, or the works of George H. Mead, Charles Cooley, Herbert Blumer, James Carey, Carl Couch, Norman Denzin or other theorists in the interactionist tradition. Definitions of the social situation, negotiation of meanings, social processes, framing, and other interactionist principles are possible theoretical foundations. Qualitative studies will be privileged in the evaluation of submissions, as well as those reflecting recent theoretical developments in symbolic interaction theory. Topics may include online communities, virtual environments, games, social networking sites and any other forms of computer-mediated communication. Papers that are supplemented by online materials are encouraged, and space will be made available on the journal's website (http://is.gd/gQ4Z) for authors to place links, examples, illustrations, or further discussion of the published texts. Please send submissions electronically to mjohns(a)luther.edu Deadline for submissions has been extended to September 1, 2009.
