Job opportunity: Senior Researcher - eDemocracy Programme, Hansard Society
by Andy Williamson 20 Aug '09

20 Aug '09

Are you passionate about the potential for digital media to transform politics and democracy and can you underpin that passion with a proven track record in digital democracy and high-quality research? The eDemocracy Programme is looking to appoint a Senior Researcher. The successful candidate will have a relevant research-based qualification and an established track-record of work in one or more of the programme's key discipline areas, most notably digital engagement and/or online political communication. You will have developed an intuitive grasp of emerging digital technologies and trends and be able to demonstrate experience in developing research proposals, research design, data collection methods (including interviews, focus groups and surveys) and data analysis (qualitative and quantitative). Alongside your ability to convey complex ideas and information succinctly to a range of audiences, in writing and in person, you will have developed relevant networks including senior people in the political, governmental, academic and non-governmental spheres. Based in London, the Hansard Society's eDemocracy Programme has led the way in understanding how digital media affect and transform the way democracy works. From the internet's impact on parliament, to better government engagement with citizens and the potential for civil society to harness digital media, our thought-leading research has been a formative part of an emergent digital Britain. Today, we undertake research and produce publications and commentaries that deliver value and push the boundaries of digital democracy. Our work is about democratic innovation. Focusing on online political communication and citizen engagement, our work explores the many faces of digital inclusion, citizen engagement, political campaigning and parliamentary process. for credentials, in part
by Barry Wellman 19 Aug '09

I will (yet again) go against the Expressed opinion of most (altho like Spiro Agnew, I wonder about the Silent Majority)* [*This is the first time I have ever quoted Spiro approvingly and I doubt I will ever do it again.] I take credentials seriously. They give somewhat of an indication that the person has earned the right to give an opinion on an area of her/his expertise. In my own case, my .sig is automatically added, altho I can always delete, but I rarely do because I have earned every inch of it (in blood and sleepless nights) and it gives some indication of what I do -- and don't know -- with a link to my websites for those who want to know more. Of course, credentials aren't everything. I've taken Jeremy Hunsinger Very Seriously since the first time we e-met, because of the cogency and brilliance of his comments. And I've met a number of people interpersonally and through their papers whose comments I always take seriously. And of course, having a PhD, tenure, etc. doesn't mean you ain't a jerk. We all have had some experience of that. Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. Funnily enough, I too was about to stress *relevance* before reading Rasha's latest posting below. As a subscriber to the Association of Internet Researchers list I am interested in keeping up with what other Internet researchers are doing, and this includes being able to place them and their Internet research geographically, professionally, etc. So I look at signatures pragmatically: it makes life easier when people remind others of their geographical location and academic (or non-academic, as the case may be) background. A signature often helps to jog the memory as well (e.g. oh yes, that phd student at Bristol university working on Twitter). Whether a list contributor practices snowboarding or is a fan of Ricky Gervais is not relevant to this Internet research list. So I would encourage posters to include a relevant signature, preferably with a link to a homepage or blog where we can learn more about their Internet research, but I wouldn't make this mandatory. And I thought that the debate between what is private and what is public on the internet has been settled now! I was wondering if someone wanted to use data from this list for their research (no I am not planning to do it and if I were, I would bend over backwards to get permission). That said, I have used data from tourism message boards for a few papers. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread, and I am one of the lurkers here. important!
by Charles Ess 19 Aug '09

Dear AoIR-ists, In my note earlier today on the upcoming elections, etc., I neglected to make one very important point: our bylaws restrict voting in the elections to members of AoIR in good standing - namely, those who have paid their membership fee in the past year (this would automatically include anyone who registered for IR 9.0 in Copenhagen last October). So, if you're not a current member of AoIR, you are relieved of the responsibility and joy of voting ... if you are a member, I hope you're starting to study those candidate statements carefully, and perhaps are well on the way to crafting a sharp and insightful question to ask! many thanks, and cheers, - charles ess Institut for Informations- og Medievidenskab Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N. Accessibility, inclusivity and dissolving boundaries are core to the Open 24/7 theme for the design of human interaction with and through digital technologies. The integration of digital technologies into our everyday life allows for a seamless transitioning between open and closed, work and leisure, public and private. Open implies participation and collaboration across traditional borders between individuals, organisations and disciplines. OZCHI 2009 provides a forum to discuss all aspects of openness, open borders, open participation, open source and open architecture. Theme-related submissions may address these topics: .. Open always-on real-time ubiquitous and pervasive designs .. Open design and universality versus situatedness, contextualisation and personalisation .. Open source for design – design for open source .. Open mind – new ideas, concepts and approaches from outside HCI .. Beyond open – never closed: design for escapism CONFERENCE TOPICS Submissions in all areas of HCI are encouraged. In addition, we particularly invite authors to address any of the following topics: Augmented Reality | Context and Location Awareness | Education and HCI | Health Care and HCI | Innovative Design Methodologies | Smart Service Delivery | Sustainability | Universal Usability and Accessibility | Urban Informatics | Tangible User Interfaces | Visualisation Techniques | Working across Cultures SUBMISSIONS All submissions must be written in English. Both long and short papers will undergo a double blind review process by an international panel and evaluated on the basis of their significance, originality, and clarity of writing. Accepted long papers and short papers will be available in the published proceedings. Presentations may include areas such as: challenges faced in implementing methods and techniques; development of new or improved techniques; or incorporating usability into an organisation. Submissions should contain: 1. A 250 word summary for the conference program including: the issue addressed; what will be presented; and relevance to the HCI community. 2. A proposal outlining the presentation and the rationale behind it, including: ◦ Session title ◦ Presenter(s) name and organisation ◦ A brief background of the presenter(s) and organisation ◦ The business problem addressed ◦ The approach and/or solution ◦ Challenges and issues that emerged throughout the project ◦ Benefits and limitations ◦ If applicable, how a similar approach or solution could be used in other contexts ◦ Relevance of the case study to other HCI professionals ◦ Technical requirements for delivering the presentation Submit Industry Case Studies by email to: industry(a)ozchi.org Ash Donaldson, Produxi Consulting & Shane Morris, Microsoft Industry Chairs industry(a)ozchi.org DEMOS & POSTERS Demonstrations and posters provide an attractive way to showcase real outcomes of human-computer interaction research and development.
