Dear all, we are starting to hire! We are currently seeking to fill 18 PhD-position in the field of Communicative AI / Generative AI and society. The positions are announced as part of a major research cluster on Communicative AI funded by the German and the Austrian Research Foundations, led by Andreas Hepp and Wiebke Loosen, with PIs from multiple disciplines and research institutions, including me. The PhD positions are fully funded for 4 years, located mostly at ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research, University of Bremen, others are located in Hamburg, Vienna, and Graz. Work will be interdisciplinary but our perspective is informed by media and communications, sociology / STS, law, and computer science / HCI. Deadline is September 27, 2024. We invite all researchers interested in search engine data analysis to the next RAT Community Meeting! The RAT Community Meeting series brings together researchers interested in collecting and analyzing search engine data. The interactive meeting provides information on new features of the RAT software, hands-on tutorials explaining how to use RAT for your research projects, showcase presentations covering search engine studies from areas such as health and politics, an interactive poster session, and lots of room for discussion and networking during breaks and at the conference dinner. When? Friday, 27th September 2024, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. (+ conference dinner) Where? Hamburg, Germany Please note that this is an in-person event which will not be streamed. With RAT, researchers can easily define a list of queries. The tool then automatically queries selected search engines, collects the results, and presents them in a structured format for further processing. RAT efficiently collects result URLs, full text, and screenshots. In research studies, researchers run automatic analysis and classification or let jurors evaluate results on whatever criteria they are interested in. RAT is free to use through a web interface. It is fully open source, so researchers can run their installations or modify the software to fit their needs. Dear list, I would like to share with you the open access book Radio Explorations https://www.transcript-publishing.com/978-3-8376-7337-1/radio-explorations/ which presents an encounter between radio signal recordings, data feminism, and experimental design, offering innovative tools and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. I argue that an intersectional perspective on information technology is needed, to articulate relevant points of observing, experiencing and being attentive to forms of social and environmental in/justice it may perpetuate. Radio signals incorporate nature and technology in a fascinating mixture of engineering, environment and chance: poems, sounds, and all sorts of messages are encoded and transmitted at large distances as electromagnetic waves. With this book, I explore the cultural practices related to radio communication and information technologies as technical and societal domains. Contributors present post-disciplinary research into the material, logical and onto-epistemological properties of radio signals. These approaches to radio signals specificity and situatedness expand the feminist materialist resistance to dualistic and universal readings of the world. Researcher in the Field of Critical Digital Studies with a Focus on Digital Democracy Paderborn University’s Media Systems and Media Organisation Research Group seeks to fill the following position: Researcher in the Field of Critical Digital Studies with a Focus on Digital Democracy (salary level according to 13 TV-L). with 100% of the regular working hours. This is a fixed-term position from 1.1.2025 until 31.12.2026 that is part of an EU research project. The appointed early career researcher will work at Paderborn University in the Horizon Europe research project INNOVADE: INNOVAtive DEmocracy through Digitalisation (funded by the Call HORIZON-CL2-2024-DEMOCRACY-01-07: Past, Present and Future of Democracies). Purpose of the workshop The purpose of the workshop is to provide an international platform for researchers from different disciplinary areas and academic levels to meet to critically discuss and reflect on different use cases illustrating AI-enabled surveillance in policing contexts. Our aspiration is to generate and share new contributions to knowledge around the existing, future and potential uses of AI, and their implications and consequences, in policing and law and order. In this respect, we aim to reflect on contemporary technological development as well as, and alongside, significant legal, organisational and political contexts. The European AI Act, for example, will play a role in shaping the regulatory environment. Issues relating to how law enforcement authorities navigate and balance the borderland between, on the one hand, the rapid technological development and recently extended mandate to use new technology as part of the authority's work practice, and the emerging comprehensive policy and regulatory framework in which the AI Act has a significant role. Balancing the possibilities with AI for law enforcement while adjusting and balancing the work practices to new regulation will likely create a set of tensions and dilemmas, and may possibly also lead to institutional conflicts. Publication Following on from the workshop the organisers will facilitate the publication of an edited collection on the topic of the workshop to the Routledge Studies in Surveillance book series [https://www.routledge.com/Routledge-Studies-in-Surveillance/book-series/RSS…] We aim to include all workshop contributions in this edited collection. Chapter contributions are expected to be in the range of 5-6,000 words. Algorithms, autonomy and news choice overload

Dear AoIR colleagues, With a shameless lack of humility, I draw your attention to a new open access article published this week in Policy and Internet: 'A legal cure for news choice overload: Regulating algorithms and AI with ‘light patterns’ to foster autonomy and democracy'. The link is here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/poi3.412 And the abstract goes a little something like this: Despite an unprecedented abundance of news content, both news avoidance and dissatisfaction are rising. Blending journalism, philosophy and law scholarship, this paper argues that ‘news choice overload’ causes paralysis and poor outcomes as it transfers power to algorithms, thereby harming autonomy and, in turn, democracy. An analysis of Australian and European regulatory responses shows the need for an algorithmic regulator and a transparency requirement for digital platforms. Further, people's ability to choose autonomously can be fostered by positive interventions, or ‘light patterns’, including ‘diversity nudges’ and a shift from caveat emptor to a caveat venditor approach, in which digital platforms are assigned legal responsibility. Recognising that it is autonomy and democracy—not choice per se—that are valuable, such interventions can shift meaningful decision-making back to citizens at a moment when the rise of generative artificial intelligence is giving algorithms yet more power.
