Public Lecture exploring use of digital technology in early years childhood

Dear AoIR colleagues, The Joyce Morris Early Years Literacies Forum at University of East Anglia is delighted to announce an upcoming public lecture presented in collaboration with the British Sociological Association's Digital Sociology Group. On Wednesday 13th November, we will be welcoming Professor Sonia Livingstone to the University of East Anglia for a public lecture exploring the question: Can young children benefit from using digital technology or is it time for a ban? Professor Livingstone is a professor in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Director of Digital Futures for Children. She has published 20 books exploring the impact of media on different audiences, with a significant focus on the impact of technologies on children. She has advised the UK government, the European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, and many others, on children's internet safety and rights in the digital environment. Professor Livingstone has served as chair of the LSE's Truth, Trust and Technology Commission, Special Advisor to the House of Lords' Select Committee on Communications, Expert Advisor to the Council of Europe, President of the International Communication Association, and Executive Board member of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety. It is truly an honour to welcome Professor Livingstone to UEA to discuss her work with us, and explore the relationship between childhood and technology. Human-Machine Communication Syllabus Project

Communication and media research is expanding to include artificial intelligence and robotics, and this broadening of the study of communication also has extended to the classroom. Scholars who are integrating human-machine communication into their courses are invited to participate in the Human-Machine Communication Syllabus Project by Andrea L. Guzman, Northern Illinois University, and Jason E. Archer, Michigan Technological University. The purpose of the project is two-fold: First, we aim to study how scholars are conceptualizing human-machine communication and incorporating it as a subject of study within higher education . Second, we want to offer scholars the opportunity to voluntarily share and access HMC syllabi to support education in this emerging area. The research portion of the project focuses on how educators are integrating aspects of human-machine communication into courses at the undergraduate (associate, bachelor’s) and graduate (master’s, PhD) levels. Human-machine communication can be defined as meaning-making among humans and communicative machines (i.e. smart assistants, robots, generative AI, automated journalism) and the implications of such technologies for self, culture, and society. Its study draws from and has applications to the full realm of communication and media research and, in particular, encompasses aspects of human-computer interaction (HCI), human-robot interaction (HRI), human-agent interaction (HAI) and critical and cultural approaches regarding technologies articulated as communicators. (See below for additional HMC resources.) For the study, we are seeking syllabi for courses that focus primarily on human-machine communication and its applications as well as courses in which at least 25% of the content covered is dedicated to some aspect of human-machine communication and/or its application. To support teaching and learning, we are also creating a public repository of HMC syllabi submitted for this project. We are asking submitters whether they would like their syllabi to be included in a publicly-accessible online location to assist others in the development of HMC-related courses. Inclusion of an individual’s syllabus in the public repository is completely voluntary and does not affect their ability to participate in the research project. The researchers will destroy all syllabi not included in the repository after the completion of the research project. The repository will be made publicly available at a future date when all syllabi have been received and reviewed. The deadline to submit your syllabi to the project is September 13, 2024. Dear colleagues, We hereby invite you to submit your abstracts to our upcoming session on "AI, Gender and the Future of Work", as part of the WG10 Digital Sociology (host committee), at the 5th ISA Forum of Sociology next year (July 6th-11th, 2025) in Rabat, Morocco. Artificial intelligence has become increasingly important in the world of work in recent years. While there has been an intense public debate about the opportunities and risks for several years now, the hype surrounding ChatGPT has also led to a dynamic everyday use of AI. At the same time, hidden AI applications have been used in the world of work for some time without users being aware of it. Furthermore, first research as well as news media reports showed that AI has or could have various gender-relevant effects. In addition to the problematization of obvious discriminatory effects (e.g. bias in automated translations or recruiting applications), automation risks and the anticipated different impact on male and female professions, as well as the male-dominated work cultures, the "diversity crisis" in development teams, and sexism in the tech industry were discussed. Both work and technology are deeply shaped by historically evolved gendered inequalities. The question of what significance technological change has for the stabilization or destabilization of gender inequalities is therefore anything but new. However, new technologies always offer opportunities to renegotiate power and gender relations and to shape working conditions. The question of how gender inequality in the world of work will change with AI is still open. This session will present current research on AI, gender, intersectional aspects, and the future of work. Papers on empirical findings, theoretical and conceptual considerations as well as methodological aspects are welcome. Call for applications for 18 doctoral positions in the research unit: “Communicative AI: The automation of societal communication” (FOR 5656) How is societal communication evolving with the profound transformation of the digital media environment through communicative artificial intelligence? What consequences, risks, and opportunities arise from the widespread use of this new technology across various social domains? Within this project, the successful applicant will independently lead research activities and contribute to collaborative work focused on improving the observability of digital advertising. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated researcher excited to work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research team to develop and implement novel approaches for studying the automated advertising model of digital media platforms. The researcher will play a key role in supporting data donation research with Australian participants with the project team. Participants in the project will use novel digital tools to collect and donate the ads they see in their digital feeds to the research team. This will include working with the project team to develop data donation methods, managing the recruitment and engagement with participants, organising and analysing donated data. Platform is an open-access graduate publication Journal of Media and Communication. It is dedicated to publishing work from graduate students and early career academics. Founded and published by the Media and Communications Program, School of Culture and Communication, at the University of Melbourne, Platform was launched in November 2008—more information on the CFP is below. Best wishes, Ivan Kirschbaum *PhD student at the School of Culture and Communication,* *University of Melbourne* *Call for papers* *Digital Governance for a Human-Centred Society * The world’s increasing interdependence and reliance on digital platforms, mobile applications, data, algorithms, and automated technologies pose various issues and challenges. Fake news and misinformation, personal data privacy risks, antitrust and platform monopolies present new challenges for emergent ‘platform societ(ies)’ (van Dijck et al., 2018). This special issue of Platform Journal focuses on “Digital Governance for a Human-Centred Society.” It highlights the pressing need to re-examine the roles of citizens, civil society, private sectors, governments, and NGOs in creating more fair, open, inclusive, and human-rights-centred governance of the digital sphere. The issue emphasises ‘human-centred’ societies where technologies are expected to improve individuals’ lives with consideration of inclusive growth, equal access, and social responsibility. In this case, digital governance is also deeply embedded within offline society, as power structures of inequality, violence, discrimination and marginality get replicated and become more complex through digital technologies. We invite research that explores the challenges, particularities, and commonalities of digital governance. Submissions highlighting experiences and insights from the Global South are especially welcome. This special issue aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to present new research and developments in the digital governance area. Areas of interest for this special journal issue include, but are not limited to, the following topics: - Trust in the digital society between individuals, private and public sectors. - Data concerns within a transnational context, such as issues of data colonialism. - Global South digital transformations. - Challenges and opportunities for inclusive governance. - Privacy and ethics of new technologies. - Surveillance society. - Internet Freedom and Human Rights. - Governance of emerging technologies. - Global, regional, and local approaches to digital governance. - Emerging and future digital governance, citizenship(s), and policies. *Abstract submissions due: * 23:59 (AEST), Tuesday, 1 October 2024 *Full paper submissions due:* 23:59 (AEST), Monday, 3 February 2025 All abstracts should be submitted via email to platformjmc(a)gmail.com. Abstracts should not exceed 350 words. Abstracts are to be submitted no later than 1 October, 2024. Selected abstracts will be invited to submit a full paper, which will be due 3 February, 2025. Please be aware that acceptance of abstracts does not guarantee publication.
