As digital connectivity increases globally, so do the risks associated with online safety, making it essential to have standardized benchmarks to guide and improve the practices of entities responsible for internet safety. The proposed benchmark will be built around a series of key performance indicators (KPIs) and best practices, offering a comprehensive framework for assessing online safety measures across different sectors and regions. By examining current policies, identifying gaps, and proposing actionable solutions, the project will contribute to the creation of safer online environments worldwide. We are specifically interested in *how instructors think AI has or will change the use of online discussions* and any changes made due to the increased use of AI. This thematic issue aims to contribute to these efforts by providing a forum for debate and exchange on open research infrastructures for communication and media research, with a focus on non-commercial resources following open science principles. In addition to completing courses in media theory and other fields of interest, students learn how to create thoughtful and engaging projects using a variety of media practices including documentary film, multimedia websites, interactive video installations and other online tools. In their two years in the program, MAPE students will collaborate with faculty, community leaders, nonprofit organizations and socially engaged corporations to devise innovative pathways to the study, commentary and presentation of social issues. The MAPE prepares students for a variety of professions, both at the national and international level, in government, media, cultural organizations and the nonprofit sector, as well as for pursuing further study in a PhD. Students are also encouraged to participate in the labs and centers listed below. The MDST PhD is unique in how it excels at delivering specialized research and curriculum while also collaborating with other units on campus to help doctoral students customize their program of study to their specific interests. Students and faculty involved in the program may draw heavily on cultural theory and critical theory to better understand interactions among the major components of the past and present of media. Our work is also often interdisciplinary (as we draw on social, economic, political, historical, legal/policy/regulatory and international perspectives). Call For Papers The Game Studies area of the National Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association Conference invites proposals for papers and panels on games and game studies for the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association National Conference to be held on April 16-19, 2025, in New Orleans. The deadline for proposals is November 30th. I. Topics of Interest The organizers seek proposals and papers covering all aspects of gaming, gaming culture and game studies. Proposals can address any game medium (computer, social, console, tabletop, etc.) and all theoretical and methodological approaches are welcome. Submission Process The Game Studies area of the National Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association Conference, which began as the Video Games Studies area in 2003, has the most enduring footprint of any North American academic organization that gives serious attention to the social and cultural impact of games and gaming. The area continues to grow and offers two avenues for scholars to participate and present their work. A. Paper Proposals For individual paper proposal submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) abstract. B. Panel Proposals For panel submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) panel abstract, as well as 100-word abstracts for each individual presentation. Panel proposals must be emailed to the area chairs. Be sure to include the proposed title of the panel, the organizer’s name, affiliation, mailing address, and email, as well as this information for all panelists. III. Information about the Conference A. So that there will be ample time for discussion, each individual paper presentation should be designed to last approximately twelve to fifteen minutes (there will typically be four presentations per session with time for Q&A). B. Technology for use during presentations may be limited. More information about the conference can be found at http://www.pcaaca.org/ C. Presenters will be required to join either the Popular Culture Association or the American Culture Association prior to attending the conference, as well as pay a registration fee for the conference. D. Awards and Travel Grants are offered, on a competitive basis, by the National Popular Culture Association / American Culture Association IV. New policy regarding Undergraduate Presenters An undergraduate presenter must have a faculty member as a sponsor. This faculty member must also attend the conference, as well as the session in which the student presents. It’s the responsibility of the sponsor to help the student prepare by explaining conference etiquette (both for presenters and for attendees) and working with the student on the presentation. We encourage students to discuss their ideas with their sponsor before submitting a proposal, seek feedback on the draft, and, if possible, to rehearse the presentation together. Our area has a number of members who would be happy to serve as sponsors. An undergraduate who wishes to apply but lacks a sponsor may reach out to the Area Chairs, and we will attempt to pair the student with an appropriate sponsor. Read the PCA Code of Conduct. New CDT research report - Moderating Maghrebi Arabic Content on Social Media

Hi everyone, We are delighted to announce the publication of our latest CDT research report, "Moderating Maghrebi Arabic Content on Social Media: Challenges and Implications <https://cdt.org/insights/moderating-maghrebi-arabic-content-on-social-media/>". This report investigates the significant challenges for moderating Magrabi Arabic content on social media platforms, a topic critically under-examined in current literature. This report is part of a research series by CDT on the challenges of moderating low-resource languages in the Global South. Using a mixed-method approach involving interviews, focus groups, and online surveys, our study found that many social media companies employ a global content moderation strategy, whereas others adopt a localized approach tailored to regional cultural contexts. Additionally, Maghrebi Arabic users often resort to tactics like "algospeak" to evade moderation algorithms, driven by concerns over perceived political censorship. They also rely on mass reporting due to ineffective reporting mechanisms. Also, we found that the lack of diversity in natural language processing teams and inadequate training datasets for Maghrebi Arabic dialects significantly impact the accuracy of automated content moderation systems. The book, published in the Oxford Studies in Digital Politics series, is based on five years of mixed method research examining manipulative media practices by right-wing media outlets and activists. Theoretically oriented yet empirically grounded, Hacking Hybrid Media shows how the hybrid media system enables enterprising approaches to political communication and develops a theory of "networked media capital" to explain how such power works in an era of mediatization.
