A guide on setting up a mailing list that I wrote for staff a decade or two ago says: If your mailing list is primarily for one or two way communication such as course announcements, then set the default 'reply to' to the individual poster. If your mailing list is for class discussion, then set the default 'reply to' to the mailing list. Use the list 'signature' to advise your students that replies go to the list and give your own email for private replies. There were/are good reasons for this advice. Change of default reply setting on air-l
by Holly Kruse 11 May '09

Up until now on air-l, replies to messages posted to the list went, by default, to air-l. The default reply setting for air-l has been changed. As of now, replies to list posts will go privately to the message poster and not to air-l. If you would like people on the list to see your reply, you will need to manually insert the air-l address into the To: field of your reply. A factual question would seem to be relevant: Will "reply-all" on most email clients go to the whole list? And to follow on others' questions as to the motivation, if it is about email volume, (1) there's still the digest option, (2) anybody done a study on what volumes of email or number of members prompt changes like this or proposals to split a list? I'm also going to argue in favour of leaving the setting as it was. I don't want my inbox cluttered with too many mails so this is why I digest and/or filter the various lists I'm on. I'd rather filter my own information and have access to the whole community's thoughts. Regards, Paula

Hello, all, I think the execs will want to reconsider their decision after seeking and reading the input from those here. I think it is the responsibility of the individual to go to email. The relatively few errors over the years don't justify taking away the social nature of the list, the default option to send to all. thanks, a

"Reply all" will send two copies of the response to the sender, which could also be annoying. Ditto. Very bad idea: please pass these emails to the Executive Committee and ask them to reconsider. Robert Berkman Associate Professor Media & Film The New School I'm totally agree with Jeremy. This desicion may kill the whole idea. It's strange to see that people, studying Computer Mediated Communications don't understand how crucial such changes in settings may be to the communication and community in general. Please, change your mind and revert this setting back. Best wishes, Alexander. ************** The Average US Credit Score is 692. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! Can I link YouTube clips on my course's Blackboard site?
by reuven shlozberg 11 May '09

Delurking for a couple of quick questions that 'the authoroties' can't seem to to give me an authoritative answer to ... I am starting to teach my first course at the University of Toronto, where Blackboard is used. I would like to link YouTube clips relevant to my lectures (the course is on US Politics) on my Blackboard course site. Would I be in contravention of copyright laws if I did that? Does it make a difference whether the clips are news items, political speeches/news conferences, or music/movie clips? Thanks for any help, Reuven Shlozberg PhD Candidate Political Science University of Toronto -- http://www.fastmail.fm - A fast, anti-spam email service.

Engaging Data First International Forum on the Application and Management of Personal Electronic Information October 12-13, 2009 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA http://senseable.mit.edu/engagingdata/ The Engaging Data: First International Forum on the Application and Management of Personal Electronic Information is the launching event of the Engaging Data Initiative, which will include a series of discussion panels and conferences at MIT. This initiative seeks to address the issues surrounding the application and management of personal electronic information by bringing together the main stakeholders from multiple disciplines, including social scientists, engineers, manufacturers, telecommunications service providers, Internet companies, credit companies and banks, privacy officers, lawyers, and watchdogs, and government officials. The goal of this forum is to explore the novel applications for electronic data and address the risks, concerns, and consumer opinions associated with the use of this data. In addition, it will include discussions on techniques and standards for both protecting and extracting value from this information from several points of view: what techniques and standards currently exist, and what are their strengths and limitations? What holistic approaches to protecting and extracting value from data would we take if we were given a blank slate? These issues and questions will be addressed through invited talks, paper presentations, and panel discussions. The forum will serve as a platform to exchange ideas, discuss the latest developments in this field, address significant issues, and create visions for the future. The forum is seeking original contributions in the form of both position papers and technical papers. Of particular interest are papers that open new paths for research, express a creative vision for the future, and contribute to a lively debate. For questions regarding paper submissions, please contact Caitlin Zacharias: czachar(a)mit.edu Important Dates Deadline for submission of full papers: July 13, 2009 Notification of acceptance: August 10, 2009 Camera-ready papers due: August 31, 2009 Early registration: August 31, 2009 Conference dates: October 12-13, 2009 Full call for papers: http://senseable.mit.edu/engagingdata/call_for_papers.html -- Dr Marcus Foth Senior Research Fellow Institute for Creative Industries and Innovation Queensland University of Technology (CRICOS No. 00213J) Victoria Park Rd, Brisbane QLD 4059, Australia Phone +61 7 313 x88772 - Fax x88238 - Office K506, KG m.foth(a)qut.edu.au - http://www.urbaninformatics.net/

DMSC Governor's Challenge Call for Judges
by Bradley, Robert 09 May '09

09 May '09

Hello Potential Digital Media Judges! The DMSC's Governor's Challenge Digital Media Tournament is upon us and it's time to recruit this year's crop of judges. We'd love to have you join us as well as help spread the word to your friends and colleagues that the fun is about to start! Last year, we had a record 111 judges from six countries participating in the peer-review model judging process. We want to break that record! go to www.tnsandbox.com and follow link to register. Our sponsors include Tennessee State University, FedEx Institute at University of Memphis, Apple Inc., Zune and Microsoft, among others. The Digital Media Sandbox Consortium (DMSC) is a regional association of academic and business partnerships engaged in creating intellectual and media assets. Much in the way that a football team brings value to a college in economic terms, we believe that media and intellectual creators and their assets have value too. The tournament mentioned above is a competition where faculty- and student-created media assets are peer reviewed by the academic, business, and design community. The winning assets then become part of the growing DMSC asset database and can be featured in the winner's portfolios. Please follow the link, www.tnsandbox.com , to learn more about what we are doing and how you can become a judge. There is ample opportunity to get involved and network. If you think you've got an eye for what professional quality work looks like, and are interested in providing feedback for students and faculty so they can become better designers, we would love for you to become one of our judges. You do not have to be a designer to be a judge. Please follow the link above to learn more and forward this email to individuals and mailing lists or discussion boards where like-spirited folk may frequent. Timeline... Register judges: May 1-31, 2009 Judging period: June 1--30, 2009 It has been a good year for the Digital Media Sandbox Consortium and we are forming roots across the Southeastern, Southcentral and now Northwestern United States. Please help us foster the integration of digital media in higher education as well as celebrate its pioneers! Look forward to announcements regarding the final deadline for submissions (still welcome at ETSU's I-tunes U site!) as the deadline is being extended slightly to allow greater participation. Register as a judge early so that we can keep in touch! Also: If you are affiliated with a higher education institution, we are still accepting media for the tournament. Please e-mail rbradley(a)tnstate.edu for further information on how to join in. Best wishes and many thanks for your participation! Digital Media Sandbox Consortium Robert R.
