Hi Gordon, While not "Web Studies" per se, the university and department where I teach, Media & Film, at The New School offers a completely online MA in Media Studies option, where you can take several theory and production courses in new media (several of which I teach). I am also the advisor to the 75 or so students in the program that are completing their MA completely online, so if you want to discuss further, feel free to email me directly at The New School at berkmanr(a)newschool.edu Best of luck Robert Berkman Associate Professor Media & Film The New School New York, NY > > Hello air-l! > > This is my first post, so please bear with me if it's not perfect. religious uses of social media
by Laura Busch 05 May '09

05 May '09

Hi Charles, I have come across a number of Buddhist uses of social media that fit within the contemplative/monastic traditions. Probably the most famous is the work at Zen Mountain Monastery, which hosts its own communications center: http://www.dharma.net/. They have an online radio station, store, and working on a "cybermonastery" where, last I heard, they would put up teachings and have a question and answer service. There is a Buddhist monk on Twitter who sends out daily messages: http://twitter.com/buddhistmonk You can also find a list of other Buddhist twitter users here: http://lodenjinpa.com/buddhists-on-twitter/ I have also observed monastics on Web forums discussing guided meditation practices with other forum members via chat using texts and images from the Web (there are a great deal of Buddhist texts online in multiple languages) to guide the practice. Hope that helps! -Laura Busch ************************** Laura Busch PhD Candidate Department of Communication University of Washington lbusch(a)u.washington.edu http://staff.washington.edu/lbusch -------------------------------- Date: Sun, 26 Apr 2009 06:22:16 -0500 From: Charles Ess <charles.ess(a)gmail.com> Reply-To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org To: "air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org" <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> Subject: [Air-L] religious uses of social media? Dear AoIR-ists, On behalf of a colleague who is seeking to help a monastic community - I'm trying to develop an inventory of (possible/actual) uses of social media such as SNS's, Twitter, etc. that either (a) fit within - rather than disrupt or distort - the disciplines and practices defining / constituting monastic life and contemplation, and/or (b) might foster one or more of those practices, e.g. _lectio divina_ and other forms of guided/disciplined contemplation of sacred texts, community prayer, etc. I have some interesting examples from my previous (very modest) work in these domains - but all of which emerged prior to the explosion of social media such as SNS's, Twitter, etc. So ... any suggestions for more contemporary examples, resources, contacts, etc. would be greatly appreciated. >>June 1<<CFP: Technical Communication Special Issue on “Legal Issues in Global Contexts”
by martine courant rife 05 May '09

05 May '09

All: 400 word proposals for this special issue due June 1, 2009, with a quick turnaround - decisions by June 15, 2009. Call for Proposals: Special Issue on “Legal Issues in Global Contexts” _Technical Communication_, the journal of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), is soliciting article proposals for an upcoming special issue that will examine how factors of law and of culture affect how technical communicators work in international and cross-cultural contexts. This special issue will be published in November 2010, and the guest editors are Kirk St.Amant of East Carolina University and Martine Courant Rife of Lansing Community College. SPECIAL ISSUE DESCRIPTION Legal issues are increasingly affecting the work we do as industry practitioners, academic researchers, university and college educators, and independent entrepreneurs in technical communication. In some cases, these legal issues involve notions of ownership, copyright, and trade secrets. In other instances, legal concerns related to privacy, disclosure, and free speech affect how technical communicators perform different activities. These legal issues are further complicated by different cultural perspectives related to working in global environments and to addressing the informational needs of different cultural groups within our own nations. Very few individuals in technical communication, however, are lawyers or have formal training in issues of law and its intersection with different cultural communication expectations and assumptions. This special issue of _Technical Communication_ will examine the legal issues affecting technical communication practices related to designing materials for or to working with individuals from other nations and cultures. POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR THIS SPECIAL ISSUE The guest editors invite proposals for papers on applied research or theory, case histories/studies, tutorials, and/or annotated bibliographies that address the following issues: • Why should technical communicators attend to global/international legal issues? Why not? • What kind of training should technical communicators have to address issues of law and culture effectively in international and domestic contexts? • How are legal issues or requirements related to language and translation affecting technical communication practices? • How should technical communicators working in international organizations approach legal issues? Should these issues be turned over to the “legal department”? Should technical communicators have input on organization policies with respect to implementing law? Should they be seen as experts in this area? Why or why not? • What developments in international law, treaties, or global-context legal conversations may impact the work of technical communicators (e.g., the EU Data Protection Directive, TRIPS [Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights], conversations on appropriation of traditional knowledge)? What recommendations might be developed to work within or challenge these new developments? • How do legal issues affect communication practices in globally distributed virtual teams? • What kinds of legal issues do international practices such as off shoring raise for technical communicators? How do these issues affect technical communication practices or provide new opportunities for technical communicators to contribute value to their organizations? • How have legal issues in global contexts become more immediate with regard to the continual growth of and use of online media in international contexts? • In what ways can our history of examining issues of intercultural communication contribute to how we approach legal issues in global contexts? • How do cultural differences related to intellectual property and copyright affect technical communication practices – particularly practices involving globally distributed teams? • How do issues of government surveillance and data mining affect the ways in which technical communicators interact in globally distributed workplaces or use online media to present information and exchange ideas across cultures? • How can aligning global legal issues and local legal issues help – or complicate how we work and conduct research as technical communicators? • What kinds of theories or research methods from the field of technical communication might inform our ability to understand legal issues in global contexts? • In what ways can/should technical communicators enter into public discussions about global-legal issues? SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Proposals should be no more than 400 words in length. All proposals should include submitter name, affiliation, and email address as well as a working title for the proposed article. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE The schedule for the special issue is as follows: 1 June 2009 -- 400-word proposals due 15 June 2009 – Guest editors return proposal decisions to submitters 1 October 2009 – Draft manuscripts of accepted proposals due 15 February 2010 -- Final manuscripts due November 2010 -- Publication date of special issue CONTACT INFORMATION Completed proposals or questions about either proposal topics or this special issue should be sent to Kirk St.Amant and Martine Courant Rife at tc.special.issue(a)gmail.com -- Martine Courant Rife, JD, PhD Professor, Writing Program Lansing Community College Communication Department Arts & Sciences Building, 211G, 517/4839906 martinerife(a)gmail.com //AIM martine785

Mobile Apps For Virtual Learning Environments
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 03 May '09

03 May '09

Colleagues/ I am greatly interested in learning of the availability of mobile apps that interface with any/all Virtual Learning Environments. As defined in Wikipedia "A virtual learning environment (VLE) is a software system designed to support teaching and learning in an educational setting, as distinct from a Managed Learning Environment (MLE) where the focus is on management. A VLE will normally work over the Internet and provide a collection of tools such as those for assessment (particularly of types that can be marked automatically, such as multiple choice), communication, uploading of content, return of students' work, peer assessment, administration of student groups, collecting and organizing student grades, questionnaires, tracking tools, etc. New features in these systems include wikis, blogs, RSS and 3D virtual learning spaces. While originally created for distance education, VLEs are now most often used to supplement traditional face to face classroom activities, commonly known as Blended Learning." The better known systems include Sakai (Open Source), Moodle Open source), Blackboard and WebCT. BTW: I've just learned that Blackboard released a free application (Blackboard Learn(tm)) for the iPhone/iTouch last month. >>Institutions<< "Blackboard Learn for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch is an application that lets users receive notifications of changes and updates to their Blackboard courses and organizations in their iPhone or iPod touch mobile device. These include updates on new Assignments, Course Content, Study Group updates, Community Discussions, even Grades. Currently this application is only available in English and is available for download through the Apple iTunes App Store ... ." If You Use Any Mobile App Or Are Aware Of Such Apps For Any Type Of Virtual Learning Environment, Please Comment On The Associated Blog Entry At [ http://tinyurl.com/cmy6ug ] Thanks! /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Associate Professor Science and Technology Librarian Iowa State University Library Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu There is Nothing More Powerful Than An Idea Whose Time Has Come / Victor Hugo [ http://www.blogger.com/profile/09093368136660604490 ] Iowa: Where the Tall Corn Flows and the (North)West Wind Blows [ http://alternativeenergyblogs.blogspot.com/ ]
