Initial Internet experiences/helping first time users.
by Peter Timusk 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

I often find myself helping neighbours, family, and consumer/survivors of psychiatry to connect to the Internet for the first time. A peer to peer support group for consumers/survivor of psychiatry I am involved with as a director offers our members lessons in email and surfing/cerfing. I am curious to hear of any research in this area or some suggested terms to use to search journals and my university library. Should I be looking for the terms "novice computer users" or "novice Internet users"? I am sure this is a valuable area of research as this is part of connecting people to the net that so much public money is supporting. One would not think there would need to lessons in using a telephone ( may be there were in the past) and the telephone is also affected by public money. I know from my own reading internet studies and data that training is an important predictor. Not the most important but it has an affect. My biases are that I would like new users to get a good view of the diversity rather than all being funneled into Google, MSN, Facebook, etc. For instance in helping my Scottish mother-in-law I suggested she would be able to read Scottish new papers everyday on her computer.

Colleagues/ Earlier today OCLC hosted a Webinar on its WorldCat Mobile Pilot Project titled _Mobile Applications For Libraries And The WorldCat Mobile Pilot_ Alice Sneary, OCLC, Creative Services Analyst (Moderator) Mark Allcock, OCLC, Senior Global Manager, Market Solutions (Presenter) A Link To The Archival Recording Is Available At [ http://tinyurl.com/deuncp ] It Is A Most Excellent Presentation !!! / Thanks To Alice Sneary, OCLC For The HeadsUp !!! /Gerry ************************************************************************ ********** Colleagues/ As You May / May Not Know, OCLC in January 2009 announced its WorldCat Mobile Project "to make collections from libraries visible through mobile devices. The WorldCat Mobile pilot allows users to search for and find books and other materials available in libraries near them through a Web application they can access from a PDA or smartphone." " Advanced global positioning capabilities found in many smartphones and PDAs make it possible for users to find local library materials no matter where they happen to be. Users can even get a Google Maps view of the library location along with detailed driving instructions if the mobile device supports the application." The pilot will gather data to inform and help shape future mobile access to WorldCat.org. The pilot is now available in the United States and Canada and is expected to last six months." Yesterday I profiled The WorldCat Mobile Project in the _Mobile Libraries_ blog at [ http://tinyurl.com/deuncp ] In addition to a brief overview of the project, the profile includes appropriate links, including one to an impressive A/V demo ... _Leonardo_: New [P&T] Criteria for New Media
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

_Leonardo_: New Criteria for New Media Colleagues/ The Paradigm Are A'Changin ... . /Gerry University of Maine's criteria for New Media achievement serve as a model for faculty at other institutions. Academia's goal may be the free exchange of ideas, but up to now many universities have been wary--if not downright dismissive--of their professors using the Internet and other digital media to supercharge that exchange, especially in the arts and humanities. Peer review committees are supposed to assess a researcher's standing in the field, but to date most have ignored reputations established by blogging, publishing DVDs, or contributing to email lists. In a signal that some universities are warming to digital scholarship, however, the winter 2009 issue of MIT's Leonardo magazine--itself a traditional peer review journal, though known for experimenting with networked media--has published a feature on the changing criteria for excellence in the Internet age. To make its point as concretely as possible, the feature includes the recently approved promotion and tenure guidelines of the University of Maine's New Media Department, together with an argument for expanding recognition entitled "New Criteria for New Media." Rather than throw time-honored benchmarks for excellence out the window, "New Criteria for New Media" tries to extend them into the 21st century. To supplement the "closed" peer review process familiar from traditional journals, .... [University Of Maine's ] criteria recognize the value of the "open peer review" employed in recognition metrics such as ThoughtMesh and The Pool. As the name suggests, open peer review allows contributions from any community member rather than a group of experts, and all reviews are public; when combined with an appropriate recognition metric, the result is much faster evaluations than possible via the customary approach. "New Criteria for New Media" also urges academic reviews to reward collaboration in new media research; valuable roles include conceptual architect, designer, engineer, or even matchmaker (e.g., introducing two other researchers whose collaboration results in a publication). Because the University of Maine hopes other institutions will adopt these criteria and adapt them to their own needs, it is releasing them under a Creative Commons (CC-by) license. [snip] The new criteria have already been sought after by individual tenure candidates and cited in the Chronicle of Higher Education. You can find them in Leonardo's winter 2009 issue (vol. 42 no. 1) / Leonardo: New Criteria for New Media Abstract / This paper argues for redefining evaluation criteria for faculty working in new media research and makes specific recommendations for promotion and tenure committees in U.S. universities. Colleagues/ Yet Another May Day Event ! /Gerry Mobile Learning: A Symposium / May 1, 2009 / St. Paul's College, University of Manitoba Globally, mobile phones now outnumber computers by a ratio of 3:1. Recent innovations with smart phones - the Blackberry and iPhone - suggest the revolution has only just begun. Mobile devices now marry the power of the personal computer with the convenience and mobility of the cellphone. Emailing, web browsing, multimedia data gathering, social networking, location awareness, text messaging, and gaming are all possible on a mobile device. Other devices, such as netbooks, ipods and Amazon's Kindle, provide new opportunities for mobile computing. How do mobile technologies impact education? What can educators do to take advantage of the powerful computing devices most students carry in their pockets? BTW: NFAIS = National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services_ /Gerry _Social Media and the Future of Scholarly Communication Lyrasis Office / May 1 2009 / Philadelphia, PA BTW-2: Lyrasis = PALINET + SOLINET [snip] Not so today! Information technology, the Web, and the introduction of social media have not only broadened the geographic scope of scholarly communication beyond that of the print environment, but have re-introduced social dialog and immediate feedback into the scholarly communication process on a global scale. Scholars worldwide are embracing this change. But the organizations that have been primarily responsible for managing the flow of scholarly communication for the past three hundred plus years publishers, abstracting and indexing services, and librarians have not, for the most part, discovered how to interject their function and adapt their processes to the newly-emerging conversational communication process. This meeting will provide a glimpse at how social media are beginning to transform the scholarly communication process and how content providers and librarians are using social media to meet the needs and expectations of 21st century scholars. Partial Program >Overview: Acceptance and Use of Social Media in Scholarly Communication Steve Paxhia, Lead Analyst, Publishing Strategy & Technology Practice,The Gilbane Group >Content-Rich Scholarly Social Networks Jeff Boily, CEO, BioWizard / Lettie Conrad, Online Publishing/Product Manager, Sage Publications, Inc. >The Use of Social Media by Publishers and Scholarly Societies John Sullivan, Chief Information Officer, the American Chemical Society / Jason Wilde, Publisher, Physical Sciences, Nature Publishing Group >Technology Resources for Building Social Networks and Incorporating Social Media Dr. Bay Arinze, Professor of Management Information Systems, Drexel University and Founder and Senior Editor of MyNetResearch / Reynolds Guida, Director, Product Development, Thomson Reuters, Scientific and Healthcare Unit >Social Media in the Library Environment Jill Hurst-Wahl, Instructor, School of Information Studies, Syracuse University / Wayne Hay, IT Manager, Westchester Library System, New York Challenges to Adopting Social Media Jay Datema, Founder, Bookism.org Closing Keynote: Social Media and the Future of Scholarly Communication Darin McBeath, Director of Disruptive Technologies, Elsevier Registration [After April 10, 2009] NFAIS Members / $345 ; PALINET Members / $365 ; Non-members / $395 Thanks To Marydee Ojala / Editor, ONLINE: Exploring Technology & Resources For Information Professionals / For The Reminder !!!
