24 Apr '09

Hello to the list! I am currently working with a brilliant undergraduate honors student here at Penn State. He is working on an honors thesis focusing on photojournalism. He is seeking assistance both in terms of building a literature review as well as perhaps interviewing some academic experts. If you can help please email him directly. Thank you. Andrea Tapia, College of Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State ***Maxwell Kruger maxwell(a)psu.edu Maxwell says, "I am working on a research study for my honors thesis which is looking at the effects of technology on the field of photojournalism. In particular, I am looking at citizen contributions and how traditional media outlets have used them in the past and how they can take better advantage reader contributions, focusing on multimedia such as photos, audio, and video. I am conducting some interviews with professionals and with user contributors to look at how we can improve user contribution. Based on this information, I will be creating a demo mobile application or prototype allowing users to contribute news and will be conducting some trial runs with users to look at how they make use of the new software and features."

Velvet Light Trap #66 CFP
by Germaine R Halegoua 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

Please distribute to anyone interested. Information about the journal can be found below as well. Thank you! VLT 66 CFP “New Media in the Majority World” New media technologies are rapidly transforming cultures and media products throughout the “majority world”. This term, advocated by Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam, describes “developing” countries in a way that underscores a central paradox; while decision-making power largely falls to “Group of Eight” countries, those outside this power structure comprise the bulk of the world’s population. Nations, regions and communities in the majority world, including India, China, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa all engage with locally-specific, yet globally-inflected forms of production, exhibition, distribution, and reception that chart new courses for new media technologies and suggest the possible rise of “majority media.” This issue of The Velvet Light Trap will examine the majority world in light of changes brought about by digital communications technologies, including digital production software, Internet media, DVD, digital video, satellite television, and mobile phones. Majority world cultures are being reshaped through new opportunities for media production, distribution and consumption. Examples include: the creation of a new Arab public sphere through web-based media, SMS-centered activism in Uganda, the use of digital video in Iranian cinema, the Nigerian trade in Bollywood videos, the global circulation of the telenovela bolstered by satellite television, and the use of cell phone footage in Middle Eastern documentary. This issue will privilege studies that investigate, through primary research and concrete analysis, how the production, content, and reception of non-Western film, television, and digital media have been affected by the rise of new media technologies. While this issue focuses on the changes brought about by global interactions and new technologies, essays that argue for continuities from older media and contexts in the face of such changes are also welcome. Ultimately, this issue will prioritize those submissions that attempt to sketch out the industrial and cultural forces behind these mediascapes despite their at times radically politicized contexts. Beyond the subjects suggested above, possible topics addressing new media in the majority world (especially in the Middle East, India, China, Africa and Latin America) include, but are not limited to: -how institutional contexts (i.e. ones influenced by particular legislation, policies, or flows of capital) have facilitated the use of new media -locally based reception studies that investigate how the majority world interacts with new media -aesthetic choices confronting majority world filmmakers using digital technology -the role of new media in shaping or re-invigorating locally specific narrative content -how new media is affecting media distribution and/or marketing in the majority world -locally based studies of the economics of new media in the majority world -locally based studies of majority world news media -how new media technologies are being integrated into established production practices and/or how they are paving the way for new ones -the role of new media practices in globalizing local media forms and production Papers should be between 6,000 and 7,500 words (approximately 20-25 pages double-spaced), in MLA style with a cover page including the writer’s name and contact information. Please send four copies of the paper (including a one-page abstract with each copy) in a format suitable to be sent to a reader anonymously. All submissions will be refereed by the journal’s Editorial Advisory Board. For more information or questions, contact John Powers (jppowers(a)wisc.edu) Nick Marx (njmarx(a)wisc.edu) Liz Ellcessor (ellcessor(a)wisc.edu ), or Colin Burnett (burnett2(a)wisc.edu) Submissions are due September 15, 2009, and should be sent to: The Velvet Light Trap University of Wisconsin, Madison Department of Communication Arts 821 University Avenue Madison, WI USA 53706-1497 The Velvet Light Trap is an academic, peer-reviewed journal of film and television studies. Issues are coordinated alternately by graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Texas-Austin. Re: [Air-L] Visualization tool for conversations?
by gus andrews 23 Apr '09

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I'll definitely look into the things mentioned. Jennifer Stromer, your tool sounds like it might be suited for my data -- Herring's work has been useful to my own -- so I will be in touch. Regarding Atlas.TI, it is also what I've been using to code my data, in part because their student price for the software is $100, which is lovely of them (and probably a good marketing strategy-- "the first one is [almost] free!"). I like Atlas ok as qualitative coding software. I couldn't figure out its autocoding feature, which would have been useful for coding blog comments as they have a standard shape. Though Atlas's boolean and grep searching techniques are counterintuitive and involve a steep learning curve, those have proved pretty useful. I am generally exporting data from Atlas.TI into ManyEyes ( http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/ ) for my visualizations at the moment. Visualization-wise, Atlas.TI promises but does not deliver. As far as I can tell, the only visualizations you can do with it at the moment are network visualizations of the categories/codes you've developed yourself! The software does not seem to provide any tools for visualizing data. It's pretty puzzling why they've made it that way. I'm hoping they'll incorporate some real data visualization tools in the future. cheers, Gus Andrews > BTW, Tracy suggested Atlas.ti. I've mucked around quite a bit with > Atlas' visualization tool. It's clunky, and in the end abandoned my > efforts to use that to track interactions. I think it's useful if you're > hoping to visualize small segments of interaction. CfP: "The Politics of Open Source" - May 6-7, 2010 - Amherst, Massachusetts
by Stuart Shulman 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

http://www.umass.edu/polsci/youtube/jitp2010.pdf JITP-2010 “The Politics of Open Source” May 6-7, 2010 - Amherst, Massachusetts Full Paper Submission Due Date: January 10, 2010 Approach Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FOSS) has made significant advances, both technically and organizationally, since its emergence in the mid-1980s. Over the last decade, it has moved from a software development approach involving mostly volunteers to a more complex ecology where firms, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and volunteers may be involved. Moreover, the production paradigm continues to expand to other areas of digital content (e.g., Creative Commons, Wikipedia, Connexions, etc.). In this conference we use the phrase “open source” to capture this broader phenomenon. The Program Committee encourages disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of open source, broadly defined. "Politics" in the conference title, can have many interpretations. Political issues closely tied to the free and open source software movement(s) include: national government policies related to the adoption of open source technologies or questions related to interoperability and open standards, software patents, vendor lock-in, and copyright. These are central themes we expect may be discussed in this forum. In this context, we welcome international submissions since differences in the political perspective appear in international contexts. However, topics related to how the concept of openness has led to various interpretations, adaptations, and applications of “open source” in other domains, and political issues that surround these broader innovations, are also welcome. Specific topics might include, but are not limited to: General topics related to the politics of open source: + How open source software or its principles are changing politics + Emerging transparencies in software, systems and society + Open source in the developing world and other international contexts + The political economy of open source + Digital divides and open source Open source and the public sector: + Open source software and transparency in government + Government policies toward open source and open standards + Regulation and open source Open source and democracy: + Open source and democratic engagement + Open source voting systems + Activism, political mobilization and open source The expansion of open source into other domains: + Understanding how open source collaboration works and how it can be extended into other areas of collective action + Policy areas, such as the effects of free textbooks on education policy or the politics of "One Laptop Per Child" + The political implications of open source in other cultural domains Keynote Speakers We are pleased to confirm Eric von Hippel (MIT) and Clay Johnson (Sunlight Labs) as the daily keynote speakers for JITP-2010. Paper Submissions Authors are invited to prepare and submit to JITP a manuscript following one of the six submission formats by January 10, 2010. These formats include research papers, policy viewpoints, workbench notes, review essays, book reviews, and papers on teaching innovation. The goal is to produce a special issue, or double issue, of JITP with a wide variety of approaches to the broad theme of "The Politics of Open Source." How to Submit Everything you need to know about how to prepare and submit a strong JITP paper is documented at http://www.jitp.net/. Papers will be put through an expedited blind peer review process by the Program Committee, and authors will be notified about a decision by March 10, 2010. A small number of papers will be accepted for presentation at the conference. Other paper authors will be invited to present a poster during the Friday evening reception. All posters must include a "YouTube" version of their research findings. Best Paper and Poster Cash Prizes The author (or authors) of the best research paper will receive a single $1,000 prize. The creator (or creators) of the best poster/research presentation will also receive a single prize of $1,000. Program Committee M.V.
