Antonio, Thank you for the terribly insight research--it is refreshing to see in this world where anyone can publish anything, such quality studies substantiated by such profoundly elucidating representations of the data ;) Have referred some perspective grad students to it on my Facebook--we all need positive role models...keep up the good work! New AoIR relevant Theme@ Digital Arts & Culture Conference 2009
by Lisbeth Klastrup 21 Apr '09

21 Apr '09

Hi all, The biannual Digital Arts & Culture conference takes place in California in December 2009 (http://dac09.uci.edu) The abstract submission deadline is coming up soon - May 1st! This year, the conference is theme-based (ie paper proposals have be to submitted to a theme), and as one of the theme organisers, Im happy to announce that a new theme, of interest to perhaps some people on this list, has recently been added: "Theme: The Present and Future of Humanist Inquiry in the Digital Field What contributions may literary, poetic, and aesthetic idioms of humanist inquiry -- traditionally associated with problems of lyrical expression, narrativity, linguistic subjectivity, and authorial and readerly agencies -- continue to offer to the analysis of medial practices and systems in the era of mobile, distributed, and social media? The crux of this question, we propose, lies in the specifically historical purchase of humanist method: its ability to (re)situate new symbolic practices in complex and nuanced relation to prior traditions and atavisms of expressive language and action -- in contrast to the reductively progressivist, de-historicizing impulses of much of contemporary digitalism. This theme welcomes exemplary close readings (literary-theoretical, formalist, narratological, ludological, etc.) of electronic literature and poetry, single- and multiple-player computer games, social media, and hard and soft medial apparatuses of the digital field. Especially encouraged are such close readings which also make general claims regarding the significance of humanist investigations of digital arts and cultures." Hi Ann, I too use the term blog because I feel it represents the popular usage. I would always think myself as blogger and not weblogger. I think the earlier term weblog has been replaced in usage by blog and hence my preference. The Coming Revolution In Scientific Journal Publishing > Semantic Publishing
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

Colleagues/ Semantic publishing: the coming revolution in scientific journal publishing / Shotton, David / Learned Publishing, Volume 22, Number 2, April 2009 , pp. 85-94(10) / Publisher: Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers Abstract Recent developments in Web technology can be used for semantic enhancement of scholarly journal articles, by aiding publication of data and metadata and providing 'lively' interactive access to content. Such semantic enhancements are already being undertaken by leading STM publishers, and automated text processing will help these enhancements become affordable and routine. Publisher, editor, and author all have primary roles in that process; an incremental approach is needed. Publication of data and metadata to the Web make possible added-value 'ecosystem services'; semantic publishing will bring substantial benefits to scholarly communication. I've received a message that my article about blogging and eating disorders will be published in a Scandinavian journal. At the same time I received a message from the journal's language expert about my use of the term weblog. They are questioning the use and asks why I don't use the term blog. For some reason I have imagined that the term weblog is being used more often in research. Now I'm not so sure about it. What is your impression? Does it matter if I use the term weblog or blog? OECD White Paper: _We Need Publishing Standards for Datasets and Data Tables_
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

Colleagues/ A Cosmic Coincidence ... /Gerry OECD has released a white paper, We Need Publishing Standards for Datasets and Data Tables, which examines the problems with current data discoverability and citations and the remedy in creating industry standards for bibliographic dataset metadata and linking. Written by Toby Green, Head of Publishing at OECD and an expert in data publishing, the paper details the problems with user ability to locate and reference online data. Datasets are a significant part of the scholarly record and being published much more frequently but with widely inconsistent metadata, links and citations. The paper proposes bibliographic metadata standards that could be implemented to provide users and librarians with data that is as accessible and as easy to find and catalogue as written works like journal articles and book chapters. By following existing scholarly metadata standards, datasets can easily utilise the existing discovery channels that are used by e-journals and e-books, including library systems, cross reference linking, publishing platforms, and search engines. The paper provides straightforward standards that 'publishers, librarians and data providers can implement to improve the accessibility and usage of important datasets, both the data that underlies scholarly works and data in that is published in its own right. The Eclectic Journal is Alive And Well >>Exemplar Semantic Enhancements Of A Research Article
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

Colleagues/ David Shotton, Katie Portwin, Graham Klyne, Alistair Miles / Image Bioinformatics Research Group, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom / Have Written About A Most Intriguing Initiative In The Latest Issue Of _PLoS Computational Biology_ "Adventures in Semantic Publishing: Exemplar Semantic Enhancements of a Research Article " "Scientific innovation depends on finding, integrating, and re-using the products of previous research. Here we explore how recent developments in Web technology, particularly those related to the publication of data and metadata, might assist that process by providing semantic enhancements to journal articles within the mainstream process of scholarly journal publishing. We exemplify this by describing semantic enhancements we have made to a recent biomedical research article taken from PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, providing enrichment to its content and increased access to datasets within it. These semantic enhancements include provision of live DOIs and hyperlinks; semantic markup of textual terms, with links to relevant third-party information resources; interactive figures; a re-orderable reference list; a document summary containing a study summary, a tag cloud, and a citation analysis; and two novel types of semantic enrichment: the first, a Supporting Claims Tooltip to permit "Citations in Context", and the second, Tag Trees that bring together semantically related terms. In addition, we have published downloadable spreadsheets containing data from within tables and figures, have enriched these with provenance information, and have demonstrated various types of data fusion (mashups) with results from other research articles and with Google Maps. We have also published machine-readable RDF metadata both about the article and about the references it cites, ... . We hope the showcase of examples and ideas it contains, described in this paper, will excite the imaginations of researchers and publishers, stimulating them to explore the possibilities of semantic publishing for their own research articles, and thereby break down present barriers to the discovery and re-use of information within traditional modes of scholarly communication."
