Re: [Air-L] religious uses of social media?

Charles- Besides the links I sent previously: http://www.contemplativeprayer.net/ http://sacredspace.ie/ There is also Tangle which rebranded itself from GodTube in Feb 2009 in an attempt to become the first Christian SNS, Youtube, Facebook hybrid-alternative, see: http://www.tangle.com/ And though not run by a monastic community there is "monastic prayer" on twitter: http://twitter.com/monasticprayer and other options run by selfprofessed monastics: http://twitter.com/MONKROCK Heidi Campbell --- On Sun, 26/4/09, Charles Ess <charles.ess(a)gmail.com> wrote: From: Charles Ess <charles.ess(a)gmail.com> Subject: [Air-L] religious uses of social media? FW: CFP: Mobile communication and social policy conference
by Holly Kruse 26 Apr '09

26 Apr '09

Forwarded on request. Holly ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: RE: CFP info From: "Chih-Hui Lai" <chihhui(a)eden.rutgers.edu> Date: Sat, April 25, 2009 10:04 pm To: holly(a)aoir.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------- First Announcement and Call for Papers Mobile communication and social policy An international conference Center for Mobile Communication Studies Rutgers University New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA In the decade that has passed since the seminal workshop Perpetual Contact was held at Rutgers University, the world of mobile communication has changed dramatically. The number of mobile phone users has skyrocketed from a few hundred million to more than four billion, a growth rate easily surpassing any other technology. All aspects of social life have been touched by mobile technology, and a host of tracking and immersive, health, gaming and commercial applications have become available. For its part, the community of mobile communication scholars has blossomed from a handful of pioneers to a large, vibrant intellectual community that spans the globe. Researchers have gained deep insight into the cultural, symbolic and social-interactional aspects of mobile communication as well as its relevance to commerce. By contrast, far less is known about the social policy implications of mobile technology; this is the case despite their obvious importance to those who seek to understand human societies, not to mention those who live in them. To address this situation, a conference is being organized by the Center for Mobile Communication Studies at Rutgers University on the topic of how mobile communication influences social policy. Broad in its conception, the conference aims to produce new insights into the topic. Subjects to be addressed will range from mobiles and social programs (initiation through to evaluation) to how mobile technology is used in political campaigns and to influence the social policy environment. There will be both an open call for papers and invited talks. Presenters are being asked to combine empirical data (either qualitative or quantitative) with important theoretical issues to address the mobile communication-social policy nexus. As with earlier conferences held by the Rutgers Center for Mobile Communication Studies, this event will be both interdisciplinary in charter and international in character. Conference proceedings will be available to attendees; selected papers will be published in book form and in special issues of academic journals. How about snapping a photo while browsing through a magazine to get a free sample of a new perfume? This may sound like science fiction right now, but in Japan, this type of mobile search technology is widespread, and in the United States similar services are already being developed, services that promise just this type of virtual engagement with the world around us. This report looks at the mobile Web landscape including, mobile devices, mobile Web applications, library mobile initiatives, as well as how to create a mobile experience and get started using the mobile Web. Innovative / Editing / Publishing Services / Systems / ?

Colleagues/ I Am Greatly Interested In Learning Of Any and All Innovative Publishing / Editing Systems. By Innovative I Mean Editing / Publishing Systems That Add Value To A Publication. Examples Of Added-Value-Added Editing / Publishing Systems Are Features and Functionalities That David Shotton considers 'Semantic Publishing' "In the present context, I define 'semantic publishing' >>As anything that enhances the meaning of a published journal article, facilitates its automated discovery, >>enables its linking to semantically related articles, >>provides access to data within the article in actionable form, or facilitates integration of data between papers. Among other things, it involves >>enriching the article with appropriate metadata that are amenable to automated processing and analysis, >>allowing enhanced verifiability of published information and >>providing the capacity for automated discovery and summarization. These semantic enhancements increase the intrinsic value of journal articles, by increasing the ease by which information, understanding and knowledge can be extracted. They also enable the development of secondary services that can integrate information between such enhanced articles, ... .
