We are pleased to release the video presentations from "YouTube and the 2008 Election Cycle in the United States," which was JITP-2009, the first annual JITP thematic conference. http://youtubeandthe2008election.jitp2.net/conferencevideo The talks are all very good, but I must call your attention to the two daily keynotes: Richard Rogers & Noshir Contractor. These are brilliant talks that will change the way you think about research. Also, Max Harper from the Obama video team gave a fascinating and provocative talk. We are thrilled to have all these talks online. Enjoy! ~Stu

Invitation - US Issues Forum - Deliberative Experiment
by Steven Clift 01 May '09

01 May '09

The results thus far - online political discussions among people with diverse views is are a vast waste of time. Why? Political blog comments are mostly echo chambers that separate people into reaffirming silos and online news comments are full of anonymous diatribe. E-Democracy.Org would like to engage interested academics and students in an experiment to see if a few key rules/technologies can improve the quality of discussions. We use real names, require civility (supported by facilitation, rules, and possible member suspensions), and unique limited the frequency one can post to once every 12 hours (on our local Issues Forums it is 2 every 24 hours). We created the world's first election information website in 1994 and since then have focused our civic mission around hosting online dialogue as a trusted neutral host. For more information visit: http://forums.e-democracy.org/groups/us Also, as we build our participatory audience, we are interested in having public policy schools and individual academics share their work. Think of our members as a roving book club looking to discuss the substance of national policy issues not just punditry. Feel free to pass this invitation on to others. Steven Clift E-Democracy.Org

FlowTV CFP: Social Media
by Jacqueline Vickery 01 May '09

01 May '09

*FlowTV Special Issue CFP: Social Media (05/18/09) * Social media have created new ways for individuals to communicate and share information. Technologies such as blogs, Twitter, social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Orkut, etc.), wikis, Second Life, digg, Last.fm, FlickR, etc. have become increasingly pervasive. Social media are being used by celebrities, athletes, journalists, politicians, TV personalities, musicians, scholars, news organizations, businesses, marketers, and more. How does the use of social media change the ways we think about identity, community, and interpersonal communication? In what ways are social media being used for political purposes, for collective action, and news aggregates? How does receiving a Twitter message on your cell phone from Shaquille O'Neal or NPR's Scott Simon erode boundaries between public and private or change conceptualizations of intimacy? Are blogs and other social media challenging journalism's traditional gatekeeping and agenda-setting functions? Should we be concerned about issues of privacy and free speech? How are certain social media technologies being gendered, classed, racialized, and policed? And as is the case with all forms of media, we must be careful to ask who is denied access and to what effect? We are interested to hear what the Flow community thinks about social media technologies: uses and users, popular discourses and rhetoric, and the ways in which social media challenge concepts of identity, community, friendship, public/private, creativity, surveillance, and more. Please send submissions of between 1000-1500 words to Jacqueline Vickery ( jvickery183(a)gmail.com) and Anne Petersen (annehelenpetersen(a)gmail.com) no later than *May 18th, 2009*. Flow has a longstanding policy of encouraging non-jargony, highly readable pieces and ample incorporation of images and video. For examples, please visit FlowTV.org. -- Jacqueline Vickery Co-Coordinating Editor, FlowTV.org Department of Radio-Television-Film University of Texas - Austin "Questioning the ostensibly unquestionable premises of our way of life is arguably the most urgent of services we owe our fellow humans and ourselves." Haunted futurities symposium, early bird registration by 5 May
by Adi Kuntsman 30 Apr '09

30 Apr '09

Dear AoiR members, The event below maybe of interest to many of you, in particular, two papers dealing with cyberspace (by Debra Ferreday and yours truly). Check the link for further details and please circulate widely Adi Kuntsman ************************************************** Registration is now open, please visit our website for further details http://www.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/ricc/events/haunted/index.html To enjoy the discounted 'early bird' registration, please register by 5 May 2009 ***Haunted futurities symposium*** 9:30 am – 5pm, 4 June 2009 Humanities Building, Room G7, The University of Manchester Keynote speaker: Avery Gordon, the author of Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological Imagination In the recent years haunting has surfaced as a way of exploring the ways in which the past and in particular, past events of extreme violence, such as colonialism, slavery or genocide, haunt contemporary socialiaties. But instead of focusing solely on the past, this symposium opens up the notion of haunting to questions about ghosts of the future, about haunted futurities: be it about ways in which the past casts a shadow over (im)possible futures; or about horrors that are imagined as 'inevitable'; or about our hopes and dreams for difference, for change. Inspired by Avery Gordon's famous Ghostly Matters (1997), this symposium brings together scholars working in the arts, social sciences and humanities, in order to open up a dialogue between different disciplines and theoretical perspectives. In particular, the symposium will focus on intersections between art and social research, between people and 'things', and between the social and the psychic. This section welcomes all papers examining the relationship between church, mission and the new media, especially the Internet. How do the new media affect the ways in which the church operates? What impact do secularization, globalization and multireligiosity have on the church in cyberspace? Does the Internet offer new alternatives to traditional approaches to mission? Can church and congregational communities be built in cyberspace? Both theoretical and empirical approaches are most welcome. Media to be discussed range from business, social and technical to content-related topics. September 30th is the main Academic day, featuring the following three tracks: * Social Media Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged and totally new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space; * Ambient and Ubiquitous Media “The medium is the message!” – This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick; * Digital Games Digital play and games are currently undergoing many transformations: gaming devices are becoming truly connected, players are finding more possibilities for collaboration, and simultaneously games are being applied into novel uses and mobile use contexts. In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held on Oct 1st & 2nd, parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to attend the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference fee during these days as well.
