CFP: Porn Cultures: Regulation, Political Economy, and Technology

The Centre for International Communication Research (CICR) the Media Industries Research Centre (MIRC) and the Institute of Communications Studies at the University of Leeds are inviting you to a conference on Porn Cultures: Regulation, Political Economy, and Technology Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th of June in Leeds. The pornography industry is an under-researched culture industry. Its links to mainstream media and to the sex industry are intensifying. The mainstreaming of certain aspects of the industry in global popular culture raises questions about the adequacy, efficiency or appropriateness of existing policy. Other aspects of the industry, such as its labour conditions, its geographies of production and consumption practices associated with it have largely fallen under the radar of scholarly analysis, while much more attention has been paid to the potential for emancipatory uses of aspects of sexually explicit cultural expression. Meanwhile, technological aspects of the industry's operation are challenging our assumptions about 'choice' 'privacy' and 'freedom'. With the proliferation of the pornographic product embedded in everyday life now more than ever before existing and new questions require our urgent attention about human rights, migrants, workers and communication rights, media literacy, media ecology and the public sphere, global production and consumption cultures as well as underlying politics of gender, class and 'race'. This conference aims to bring together scholars, policymakers and activists to discuss the global pornography complex. It is the second of two conferences organised within the British Academy funded project Socialisation of the global sexually explicit imagery: challenges to regulation and research. The project has given birth to an international Porn Cultures and Policy Network, which involves scholars from a number of countries, engaged in comparative studies with an emphasis on policy. We are inviting colleagues to take part in this debate and colleagues who would be interested in working with the existing network to join us. Research on the social process of DIY broadband & (home) network installation?

Searching all the usual places & journals turns up very little. Self- installation is often noted but seems to be rarely actually researched as a 'consumer experience' or social process in the context of the 'work' one has to do to get it to work. Does anyone know of any either complete or in-progress research on this? Research done in organisational settings (especially small businesses) or by market researchers isn't excluded. software to download yahoo group data?

Hi all, I've been running a few similar yahoo groups for about 8 years now. I'd like to download data from those groups so I can take a closer look at them. I can find programs to grab the messages and photos, but nothing that also grabs the moderator data -- when members joined and left, etc. Does anyone know how I can get that data other than copy/paste? I have both a Mac and a PC, so it doesn't matter what platform the software runs on. TIA, Tery Griffin

***Apologies for Cross-posting*** Call for Submissions: Information: Interactions and Impact (i³) Deadline Reminder: Friday 6th February 2009 i3 is concerned with the quality and effectiveness of the interaction between people and information and how this interaction can bring about change in individuals, organisations, communities and society. The conference will question the way people interact with the information and knowledge content of today's systems and services, and how this might ultimately affect the impact of that information on individuals, organisations and communities. We invite the submission of high quality papers that report original research or critically discuss underlying methodological issues associated with the main themes of the conference. Papers may reflect ongoing or completed research studies and should not have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. We would particularly welcome papers which address two or more of the following conference themes: • the quality and effectiveness of user/information interactions (e.g. information literacy); • patterns of information behaviour in different contexts; • impact of information or information services on people, organisations, communities and society (e.g. social, learning, cultural and economic outcomes of engagement with information); • more effective decision making. Submissions are invited for: • Full papers; (40 minutes duration: 35 minutes, 5 minutes for questions); • Short papers (15 minutes duration: questions at end of session); • Posters; and • Round table discussions (60-80 minutes duration). Authors who are accepted to give full papers at i3 are also invited to submit a full paper for publication in a special issue for the journal Libri. Contributors should submit abstracts of 1000 words for Full papers, and 300-500 words for Short Papers, Posters and Round Table Discussions. These should be submitted electronically by downloading the online submissions form, located at: http://www.i3conference2009.org.uk/call09/AbstractSubmissionForm.doc . This should then be emailed (as an attachment) to i3submissions(a)rgu.ac.uk . The conference language will be English. In Canada our countries budget just passed or will pass tomorrow. It includes stimulus spending on broadband for rural areas any thoughts on this? Can other nationals in other countries report you regions spending on Internet and of course the climate for research spending on Internet? out of luck re transcription?

We've never found a transcription program that will work with interviews. That's because you need to train the program for each voice, and while the interviewers are trainable [;-)], each respondent isn't. Hard enuf to get a resp. to hold still to be interviewed. We have had good luck with transcription software, for going from voice recording to interviews. Tracy, what did we use last?
