My own experience of doing ethnographic fieldwork on internet and residential politics in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) chimes with Don Slater's account of the open-ended and muddling through nature of ethnographic research. Early during field research I was queried by a Swedish political scientist about what exactly I meant by 'local governance', since that seemed to be a key element of my research strategy. To his frustration, my reply will be familiar to other ethnographers - that it was still early days and I would have to see what local activists, residents, politicians, etc, made of this notion, if anything, and see where the research led me before even deciding whether this notion was even applicable to the actualities on the ground. As it happened, my findings led me in other directions. This muddling through can also reveal unexpected parallels in internet-related practices across vast geographical stretches, sometimes cutting across the North-South divide mentioned by Don Slater. For example, I didn't set out to study suburbia but it turns out that the internet uses by local activists in suburban Kuala Lumpur are not that dissimilar to those in other suburbs (e.g. of Toronto, Melbourne and Tel Aviv) - they are all shaped by the imperative to build and sustain an environment conducive to the reproduction of middle-class nuclear families. This is all very different from the kind of young urban transnational activism described by Juris (2008) in his recent monograph Networked Futures, based on ethnographic research among Barcelona-based antiglobalisation activists. Apple Mac qualitative data analysis

Hi I recommend TAMS for Mac OS X for qualitative analysis. It doesn't have the most advanced features of the proprietary versions such as NVivo but it is free - and it is free software. It handles Text files really well and can produce stats that can be outputted to Excel etc for tables and graphs. http://tamsys.sourceforge.net/ There is also a Linux version. Hi Everyone, Good to see the discussion is still ongoing! Mathias, you say: "I have however problems with the notion of "performed purely in the virtual arena". There are so few purely virtual arenas, almost everything seems to be augmented virtuality, mixed realities or augmented reality as Philippe Kerremans and others call it. Where would you look for pure virtuality?" You're 100% correct! In fact, I don't think there are ANY purely virtual spaces. As such, I don't 'do' virtual ethnography or even consider it a viable option for valid research. That's why I consider what I do 'cyber anthropology' but even that is problematic as Laetitia illuminates; "Does the cyber anthroppology assumes a "network" of interactions? Because cybernetic models (issued from WW2 and Coldwar) are based on the figure of networks. If it assumes such organisation, then cyber-anthropology fails to reevalute the distinction between virtual and real: The virtual as a field *born on this metaphor*...I thought on the contrary( according to the title) that cyber antropology would me much more emphasizing the distinction virtual/real before reading your mail!" Well I disagree with your notion of cybernetic systems. From "Soft Machines: Ana and the Internet" "Norbert Wiener's book, /Cybernetics or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine/. (Wiener 1965) introduces the term 'Cybernetics'. It is the science or study of control or regulation mechanisms in human/machine systems, the interface between human and technological artefacts. If we take the cyborg to represent the meshing of human with technological, then technologies, however rudimentary (the bicycle, the ball point pen, the bow and arrow) perfectly and elegantly make us cyborgs. We must conclude; that language, as a technology, as that key component of /being/ a human being, places us all inside the cyber, regardless of how wired in we are, how far off line or however long ago we existed. These symbolic worlds where humanity exists reduces, or produces us to cyber." (this of course raised further problematics like "what isn't cyber anthropology!?") What this whole discussion should illustrate is that we all operate on assumptions about what we are researching, we may have assumed a 'virtual space', assumed a 'boundary' to our 'virtually' ethnographic field site, assumed what 'cybernetic' means (based on Terminator films or other popular culture conceptions). All in all, the point of this whole discussion, and any discussion regarding methods of research should be that the methods should be reflexive and reflect the needs of the research site, problem or goal. The problem with 'virtual ethnography' as a recent phenomena is that often the starting point is the method, rather than the research. I'm really enjoying hearing what people have to say!! Pearse

I’ve been following the discussions on virtual ethnography with interest, and sorry to have been too snowed under (literally and metaphorically) to contribute until now. I think I agree with a lot of what Pearse has said. I did commit ethnographic sins in Virtual Ethnography and in later work I’ve tried to rectify some of them in some of the directions that Pearse advocates. The actual fieldwork in the original book was pretty thin, but I’d stand by most of the theoretical/methodological discussion in which I tried to argue that ethnography needed to be adaptive to new forms of connection and circumstance and take online interactions seriously, but not to assume in advance that any online setting constituted a bounded cultural whole. Miller and Slater argued similarly, with better fieldwork, that one shouldn’t assume the existence of a “virtual” in advance. Actually, I never meant “virtual ethnography” in my usage to imply ethnography performed only in the virtual arena. In the original book I talked about the old-fashioned meaning of virtual, as implying that something was good enough for practical purposes, or virtually the real thing, and I used that to index the need for creative adaptations of method in the face of new circumstances. I wonder now whether we need the label "virtual ethnography" at all? The embedding of internet etc in everyday life seems to me to imply that any ethnographer might be led online by the cultural connections that they follow, and it seems not good ethnography to place fieldwork boundaries according to the medium that happens to be used. Following that line of thought, has “virtual ethnography” simply collapsed back into “ethnography”? That having been said, there are certainly some fieldwork practices that are a bit different in online settings, and some tips and tricks of the trade to make it easier. The late cyberanthropologist Mario Guimaraes described some of the ways that he organized his collections of logfiles, screenshots and field diaries when carrying out fieldwork in The Palace. The results of such research are usually published and preserved for future generations by publishers and/or libraries. But what happens to the underlying research data which is vital for verifying the research outcome, or which might prove of great value to other researchers in other contexts? Digital data are much more fragile than printed resources, as hardware and software platforms evolve. Which present-day computer can deal with an 8-inch floppy disk with Wordstar text on it? The European Alliance for Permanent Access to the Records of Science (http://www.alliancepermanentaccess.eu http://www.alliancepermanentaccess.eu/ ) aims to build a European infrastructure to preserve research data for future re-use, and a number of Alliance partners have initiated a project entitled PARSE.insight (http://www.parse-insight.eu http://www.parse-insight.eu/ ) which aims to gain insight into the present practices of researchers, data managers and funding agencies with regard to creating and storing research data. The results of this project will help the European Commission determine how to invest in the European research infrastructure.
