http://www.jcdl2009.org/node/24 Doctoral Consortium CFP The Doctoral Consortium of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries Call for Participation June 15 - 19, 2009 - Austin, TX What is the Doctoral Consortium? The Doctoral Consortium is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world who are in the early phases of their dissertation work (i.e., the consortium is not intended for those who are finished or nearly finished with their dissertation). The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice on using the research environment in a constructive and international atmosphere. Students will present and discuss their thesis in the context of a well-known and established international conference outside of their usual university atmosphere. The workshop will take place on a single full day. Up to 15 students will have the opportunity to participate. Limited funding may be available to partially offset travel and registration costs for those students with severe financial need. Several prominent professors and experienced practitioners in the field of digital library research in organizations from different countries and continents will conduct the workshop. They will review all the submissions and comment on the content of the thesis as well as on the presentation. Students will have 20 minutes to present their research, focusing on the main theme of their thesis, what they have achieved so far and how they plan to continue their work. Another 20 minutes is reserved for discussion and feedback from both the professors and other participants. In the course of the workshop students will also get advice on more general questions, e.g. the differences of Ph.D. studies in different countries. Call for Papers and Topics Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit an extended abstract (see details below) describing their Digital Library research. Submissions relating to any aspect of Digital Library research, development, and evaluation are welcomed, including: technical advances, usage and impact studies, policy analyses, social and institutional implications, theoretical contributions, interaction and design advances, and innovative in the sciences, humanities, and education. To apply for participation at the Doctoral Consortium, please provide an extended abstract of your doctoral work and upload it at www.jcdl2009.org. The extended abstract is restricted to 4000 words (approx. 8 pages). Submissions should be submitted electronically in pdf format. The abstracts should * Clearly formulate the research question, * Identify the significant problems in the field of research, * Summarize the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well as the state of the art for solutions, * Clearly present any preliminary research plans and ideas, and the results achieved so far, * Sketch the research methodology that is to be applied, * Describe the expected contributions of the applicant to the research area, and * (For technical research) describes how the research is innovative, novel or extends existing approaches to a problem. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, correctness, and clarity. Workshop participation is limited to 15 Ph.D. students. Proceedings Accepted abstracts will be distributed to participants as the workshop proceedings and made available to participants via the JCDL Doctoral Consortium digitally. Participants will be invited to include their abstracts in a special issue of the TCDL Bulletin, the publication of the IEEE-CS Technical Committee on Digital Libraries. Important Dates March 23, 2009 Deadline for submission of abstracts April 10, 2009 Notification of acceptance June 15, 2009 Doctoral Consortium June 15 - 19, 2009 JCDL Contact Address Requests for information should be e-mailed to megan(a)ischool.utexas.edu and mln(a)cs.odu.edu. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Megan A. Call for book chapters
by Niels Brügger 04 Mar '09

04 Mar '09

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS ***Please distribute widely - apologies for cross-posting*** Public Service Broadcasting Online This edited collection of work by international scholars analyses how broadcasters have used the world wide web to further their public service goals. How did broadcasters such as the BBC, ABC, ARD, DR, NRK and even the US Public Broadcasting Service translate their public service remits for this global digital platform? What were the differences and similarities between different broadcasters? What can these histories tell us about a future for public service in broadcasting? These questions are highly significant for those who value public service in broadcasting, and who hope that it will continue in a globalised digitalised communications environment. A number of public service broadcasters implemented web services amid dire predictions about the death, not only of public service broadcasting, but of broadcasting itself. Despite these circumstances, the websites were (and are) often extremely successful. In July 2008 BBC Online was the 27th most popular English Language website in the world, the ABC is consistently among the top ten websites in Australia, and DR Online has for a number of years been among the top three in Denmark. Perhaps these histories of success can take public service broadcasting more optimistically into the future. Each chapter of this book will focus on a broadcaster from a different country. Comparative chapters are also welcome. We welcome chapters that focus on: • policy and strategy; • regulation, media organisation; • web content; • users; • cross-media technology; • local and global relations. We are inviting you to submit via email to Maureen Burns (m.burns2(a)uq.edu.au ) or Niels Brugger (nb(a)imv.au.dk) by 17 April 2009: • a 500 word abstract of a proposed chapter; and • a preliminary outline of the proposed chapter. The successful abstracts will form part of a book proposal to be offered to academic publishers. facebook research - need some thoughts on facebook and research ethics
by marybeth deline 04 Mar '09

04 Mar '09

Hi everyone, My name's Mary Beth Deline and I'm currently a graduate candidate at the University of Waterloo - I'm hoping I can get some help from the list re: research ethics and Facebook. I'm currently checking out how feasible my thesis proposal is, which concerns using Facebook as a site for an intervention - either by developing an application or posting information on participant's walls (these participant's would have been recruited beforehand). I've contacted Facebook and they referred me to their Terms of Services and said that was all they could do for me. I'm having trouble finding someone who can help me match that (and their Developer Terms of Service) up to the Canadian Tri-Council ethical guidelines. If anyone has any experience using Facebook as an intervention site, or is able to provide guidance/direction on FB and research ethics (either American or Canadian), could you please get in touch with me, on or off the list? I've reviewed the Tri-Council's Feb 08 recommendation paper on Internet research and have searched the archives on this list as well but haven't been able to find anything specifically about using FB as a research 'site'. Thanks in advance, MB mdeline(a)alumni.sfu.ca

Hi All, during the past weeks I observed how the list is a powerful resource for knowing about the up to date Internet research. I was wondering. Can someone point me to interesting research papers on the theme of "Computer Viruses", from social-cultural-media points of view. This will be used for a research on "Trust" & ICT that I'm currently conducting. best S. -- Stop the numbers game http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1297797.1297815 http://portal.acm.org/ft_gateway.cfm?id=1297815&type=pdf&coll=GUIDE&dl=GUID…

Intimacy and Virtual Worlds
by Tyler M Pace 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

Greetings, My name is Tyler Pace and I am a researcher with the Indiana University School of Informatics. My colleague, Shaowen Bardzell, and I would greatly appreciate your time and participation in our survey investigating the experience of intimacy in virtual worlds. You may participate in the survey via the following link. The survey should take about 15-30 minutes to complete. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=pPmM7g_2bdQSYreYaDMOzJ1A_3d_3d As virtual worlds continue to grow in popularity as both locations of personal enjoyment and professional conduct, it is increasingly important for virtual world researchers and designers to better understand the practices and experiences of virtual world users. Intimacy is one such topic which is fundamental to human relationships but has received little to no attention in virtual world research. This survey aims to shed light on how intimacy is constructed and experienced in virtual worlds. If you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to contact us. Additionally, if you know of anyone who might be interested in participating in this study, please feel free to pass this message along to them. Best, Tyler Pace (tympace [at] indiana [dot] edu) Shaowen Bardzell (selu [at] indiana [dot] edu) Indiana University School of Informatics http://informatics.indiana.edu/
