Journalist inquiry: Facebook
by Matthew Allen 06 Mar '09

06 Mar '09

Just asked by a journalist about people doing research USING FB...hasn't got access to air-l so posting on her behalf: Please reply to HER, not me :) ----- I am a freelance science journalist with an interest in social sciences, and am looking for researchers who are currently using Facebook as a research tool to study sociological questions (in other words, studies *using* facebook, rather than studies *of* facebook). For example I can imagine it would be an ideal tool for testing the notion of 'six degrees of separation'. It might also be a goldmine of social data from which one might test various theories about how people of various ages behave differently, or people of different educational backgrounds etc. I would be interested to hear of any projects like these that are ongoing; I would also be interested to hear about the difficulties and/or ease of accessing facebook data for such research. Please feel free to contact me on nkjones(a)gmail.com. ---- Associate Professor Matthew Allen Head, Department of Internet Studies School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts Curtin University of Technology CRICOS provider code: 00301J (WA); 02637B (NSW) +61892663511 http://netstudies.curtin.edu.au 2009 ALTC Teaching Fellow Immediate Past President, AOIR

Service Learning & Communicating with students
by Kristi Scott 05 Mar '09

05 Mar '09

Hi all! I work am a Graduate Assitant in the Service Learning department at the University of Southern Indiana. We are looking at ways to communicate with students better using the Internet. I'm outlining for them all the various ways that, Facebook, Twitter, Second Life, etc. can be useful in communicating with students, faculty and the non-profits we work with. I thought I'd put this out there to the lists to see if anyone is currently doing anything with Service Learning or non-profits. OR if anyone has any suggestions in general. I know that this is a supportive community and look forward to hearing from you, questions or commments! Thanks Kristi Scott 'Kady Whybrow'

I apologize in advance for the absurdity of (the scope of) this request--but can anyone point me to a good list of some of the favorite current Internet/New Media related journals. (I realize the words good and favorite in this context are fairly useless descriptors but didn't want this email to become a paper in and of itself, so thought I'd try those words out and see if they'd slip past, unnoticed...) CFP: Collaboration systems for open innovation
by Stefan Hrastinski 05 Mar '09

05 Mar '09

CALL FOR PAPERS COLLABORATION SYSTEMS FOR OPEN INNOVATION In the Collaboration Systems and Technology Track of the 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Science, 2010 http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Submission Date: June 15, 2009 The best papers will be offered to be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Networking and Virtual Organisations. MINITRACK TOPICS The open innovation paradigm suggests that organisations increasingly need to team up with other organizations and customers in developing and refining ideas, services and products. Hitherto, research on IT and open innovation has mainly explored how open innovation practices can stimulate the development of novel technologies. However, little research has studied how information technologies can support open innovation practices. For example, the networked nature of open innovation suggests that collaboration systems can support innovation practices. In this minitrack, we welcome papers that explore how various collaboration systems can enable and support open innovation in inter-organizational and intra-organizational settings, and in user and consumer networks. Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to: * Collaboration systems and open innovation * Social software and open innovation * IT and inter-organizational innovation * IT and intra-organizational innovation * IT and consumer innovation networks * IT and user innovation networks * Management of IT for open innovation * Design, application and evaluation of IT for open innovation * Theoretical foundations, methodological issues and practical approaches IMPORTANT DATES June 15: Submission deadline August 15: Author notification September 15: Submission of final version CO-CHAIRS Stefan Hrastinski (Primary Contact) Department of Information Science and Swedish IT-User Centre, Uppsala University stefan.hrastinski(a)dis.uu.se Mats Edenius Swedish IT-User Centre, Uppsala University mats.edenius(a)nita.uu.se Niklas Z. Research on online counseling in social services?
by "Minna Strömberg-Jakka" 05 Mar '09

05 Mar '09

Hi everyone, I am a Ph.D.-student in social work at the university of Turku, Finland, and am preparing my dissertation thesis on social assistance and its current problems in Finland. Concerning the internet, one of my research problems is internet-based counseling in social services since 3 cities in northern Finland (Lapland) have started such a service in co-operation with one of the centres of excellence on social welfare of northern Finland (Poske). The service itself is about that users (clients of social services) log on using encrypted connection to the service using their netbank access codes. A respondent group consisted of social workers and other professionals working at the social office prepare a response to the client who receives an announcement of the response either to his e-mail or cell phone. Then the client can read the response on a special “response account” produced by this online service. The client may present also additional questions through this service and the questioner (client) as well as the respondent (worker of social office) are able to send attachments with their questions/answers. The content of the service is varying a little bit in different cities; for ex. from daycare questions to social assistance or to the services of the handicapped and children and their families. My actual research topic in the whole dissertation is equality/inequality, so, concerning this internet-based counseling the research questions are: - how do the clients experience the internet-based counseling in social assistance compared with other forms of advising (in traditional written paperform or written internet form/phone counseling/personal counseling during time appointment/e-mail advice/possible short messages) - will clients using online counseling in social assistance fall into inequal positions with each other, depending on the professional status of the person answering to their question - is there client selection in online counseling -are there differences between cities in giving online counseling in social assistance and what kind of differences Now, I´m interested in all kind of research done in Europe or elsewhere that I could have use of in my dissertation thesis concerning online counseling in social services and for this reason am asking your opinions, ideas of information about such research. As a research material, I´m using texts (clients´questions and workers´answers). In addition to that, I should somehow collect clients´experiences on the service. Since "the research permission" does not allow for me to get to know the real identities of the clients, I should somehow get an announcement or request to the mainpage of the service for the clients to participate into my research. I would also like to get ideas on this, how to collect users´opinions in the best way. Minna Strömberg-Jakka, Researcher, Ph.D.-student in Social Work Department of Social Policy 20014 University of Turku Finland

Re: [Air-L] facebook research - need some thoughts on facebook, and research ethics
by Pearse Stokes 04 Mar '09

04 Mar '09

Hi Mary, I think the issue you need to resolve is the issue of 'intervention' not 'intervention on facebook'.. What is your proposal? What is your research question? Having broken probably every one of the British Sociological Associations ethical guidelines at some point or other I would suggest that you explore a "positive/negative" approach. Whereby you argue that the breech of ethics is offset by the value of the research. However, intervention is not research (I crossed the boundary between research and intervention in my Pro-Ana research arguing that I was a human first and an researcher second) so who are you to intervene? Perhaps if we knew what you were looking at in a bit more detail we could help. I love ethical issues! haha.
